What I mean by that is that Harry has some sort of respectful long term ambition. For example, one hypothetical ambition may be to gain political power to eventually lead wizarding Britain. Or perhaps he simply wants to become extremely wealthy.

-Resurrect his parents.
-Become a dark lord.
-Mastering multiple branches of magic and using them for a goal

Something ambitious...

But importantly an ambition which he will not abandon throughout the story. Preferably Harry Potter is grey/dark with no slash and bashing. An ambition to defeat Voldemort I don't think counts.

Noodlehammer's take on Harry is that he wants to learn everything he can about magic, & I do mean everything. He'll push the boundaries beyond what most people think is possible. He's also very much not a good guy, definitely fitting your grey/dark label. Not slash either.

Be warned, there's a lot of misanthropy in the story & Harry can be an edgelord douchebag.

Well Mystshadow’s “Forging the Sword” & The Santi’s “Harry Potter & The Boy Who Lived” are very popular stories that fit that criteria iirc.

Probably the best Harry Potter fanfic that exists and one of te best female oc's. A couple of more chapters are on DLP. (Unfinished.)

It's about canon harry meeting his female equal that through a mirror that joined slytherin instead of gryffindor. This Harry becomes obsessed with her and it's also complete. My summary does it no justice. (Finished)

And you've also got of course the most believable "canon" fanfic "On the Way to Greatness" https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4745329/1/On-the-Way-to-Greatness where canon Harry join Slytherin and this is the most believable fic of that kind. It's about Harry wanting to become great wizard like albus and voldemort. It's finished till year 6. The author is still working on it believe it or not. (Hiatus)

Last 3 fanfics are the epitome of the dark harry fanfics(becus there not edgy little powerwanking shits) and overal the best harry potter fanfics out there without a doubt.
