The opening sequence (with a rumored Kanno remix of Tank!) is dropping in 2 days at Netflix's Tadum event on September 25th, so I think it is time for an official thread.

This Polygon interview with Nemec made me very very happy. Not only does it confirm Ed will make it into the first season in some manner (I'm guessing digitally with her goofy little hacker programs as she pesters assists the Bebop crew), but it also shows Nemec has a clear understanding of what Bebop is supposed to be, and that he is incredibly passionate about the original material.

While I'm trying to keep my expectations low, my hypetrain is struggling to stay in the station.

 

There is something off about it, but not in a way that it's bad, but rather, they should get a bigger budget, but did their best with what they got. In the worst case scenerio, at least we will get a new music from Yoko Kanno.

 

On the budgeting front, there's not a lot to go on right now beyond costuming (2 of which are good, 1 of which is not), and a few flat shots of recognizable set pieces (the Bebop's lounge and C'est la v'ie look pretty spot on imo; they even mostly stuck to the same color palletes).

We'll probably get a better feeling for the budget from the trailer / op sequence.

 

I love how campy it is.

But yeah lack of budget really showing in those costume and set designs.

 

Like I said, they're trying their best with what they got and because of that people will probably not complain that much. It would be much worse if it got more money, but it was Cowboy Bebop in name only with countless unnecessary changes.

 

That was amazing. I love it and I'm actually getting hyped for this.

It's going to be different. But it looks hella fun all the same.

 

Yeah, it's a lot more campy than the original, at least this short, but it's fun and even the smaller budget works with this style. If the series is similar, it's going to be good enough which is a lot more than other Anime adaptations got.

Soooo I'm watching it. On episode 3 now. And I'm enjoying it. But the vibe is really different than the anime. Really really different. They've swapped bluesy noir for 70s kitsch and while it works, it doesn't feel anywhere near as effortlessly cool.

They're making lots of small pointless changes, like Faye's intro, Faye's fighting ability, Jet having a kid, Katerina not killing Asimov, "Fearless" (although I actually kind of like this one as it plays into the longstanding fanon idea that 'Vicious' was a title), etc etc.

Cho and Shakir are great as Spike and Jet. Pineda is... yeah, I don't know what Pineda is doing. Music's great, fight scenes are okay, and shot composition needs work.

It's enjoyable, but far from the masterpiece that is the source.
