I never read Wheel of Time so I came in with no expectations but after two episodes it just wasn't very good? Mat was the only character allowed to have any range and charisma, with the other members of the main 6 being bland and/or boring. I just don't have any investment in Voldemort or his knockoff Henson minions raiding the town, especially when the initial raid was incredibly farcical.

The Questioner knocked his scene out of the park at lesat.

Third episode is best one so far. And reviewers who saw up to episode 6 said episode 4 is where the show comes into its own and each episode gets better.

But yeah first two episodes were a rocky start and mediocre.
    I’d put episode 1 and 2 each at around a 6 with episode 3 being an 8.

Honestly, this is kind of hitting for me. Once you accept it as a different turning of the Wheel, it's actually fairly solid overall fantasy wise. It's not ready to climb into Game of Thrones' shoes, but honestly, the first couple have actually convinced me it's theoretically possible.

Yeah, I'll keep going; it's not bad background watching. Better than torturing myself with new Bebop at the very least

I liked it much more than I expected. My SO did as well, and he is a hugeeee WOT fan.

That being said, I think we both went in with lower expectations and ended up pleasantly surprised. While it suffers from some cheesy moments and shaky editing, the characters have been pretty solid, which is what matters. Editing and costumes can be easily fixed in the next season (just look at Witcher), but bad acting is a hell of a lot harder.

My fiancee and I both enjoyed the backstory changes of the characters, as it gives them a little more depth, especially as they are older here than in the books. I'm glad they did this though, instead of trying to get teenage actors.

I'd rank the first episode at 6/10 and the 2nd and 3rd at 7/10.

The best thing about the show is that it's got me rereading the books.

There's just nothing else in the same league.

I've really been enjoying the adaptation so far, even if the combat scene in Two Rivers was more than a little bit excessive. I don't mind most of the changes that the show runners made, even if some of them are more than a little bit out there (looking at Perrin)... However, it's like Brandon Sanderson said, the show should be looked at more as another turning of the Wheel than as a one to one direct port.

(Sanderson also thinks that episode 6 had the best of the scripts he was shown, so I guess that's something.)

If Sanderson said it, I trust it.

Something I haven't seen discussed so far:

The channeling was so awful. Not all of it. But the slowly floating small rocks. It was genuinely like the earthbenders in the ATLA movie (though at least it didn't tale a team of several aes sedai to move a single small rock).

I think everyone agrees that the effects are pretty lackluster. We're all just trying to move past it at this point.

Most of the People I’ve talked with in person and on the dedicated WoT forums have loved the channeling and effects.

I honestly don’t get the complaint. It’s by no means perfect at this point but the effects are high tier for television. They’re not movie tier level but they weren’t going to be.

Which I think it’s worth noting this is, as far as I’m aware, the most extensive use of magic like this we’ve gotten on a TV show. Witcher comes close I’d say.

For me the big problem here was the sound editing. The sound effects for the magic were just so quiet compared to the music and dialogue hey were basically drowned out. And they had no lower end/bass to them - my subwoofer was silent - so didn't feel like they had scale or any kind of earth shaking power.

My mother loves the show. Like at the same level or more than Game of Thrones when it started airing.

I think it's pretty good. I'm not going to let preconceptions about the books color my experience. I'm not attached enough to WoT for that.

I find the channeling effects pointlessly ostentatious. There's no way anyone could ever do anything subtle with that all going on. The trouble is, I'm hard pressed to think of a way that WOT channeling could be expressed visually. So my criticism is muted by lack of alternatives.

On the plus side, although I felt they missed the mark with a lot of what they were trying to pull off, the fact that they went for such an ostentatious approach over just occasional fireballs and cgi sparkles makes me hopeful for the crowning moment of glory style channelling we may see later on.

Logain’s channeling looks pretty badass in the teasers. Much less flailing much more Kakashi standing still and tilting his head to the side to avoid attacks vibes.
