Yeah in my experience, TheBlack'sResurgence fics are all pretty empty of any kind of serious conflict, all build up without any real satisfying climax, but they're an easy read when you're in the mood for a power wank.

 

Whispers of a Raven is interesting. Voldemort clearly outmatches Harry in their one direct confrontation, even if Harry is victorious via Peverell bullshittery But that's never built on. We'll see how the most recent update goes with soul and time fuckery.

The best part of the fics aren't even involving the Dark Lord. Its Harry's relationship with Dumbledore.

IIRC in Whispers of a Raven Arcturus Black casually cast the Cruciatus curse on a family member while having dinner.

It is sad to see that Delenda Est ( or the first half of it) remains the best example of "HP travels back in time to the 70s, romances a Black etc."

I'll second this. First time in ages that I've actually enjoyed a HP/NT fic.

Taking a look, it's got loads more chapters since I last read it. Must have forgotten to hit follow.

 

I'm pretty shocked that HP and The Clean Slate was recc'd as "actually worth reading" by not one, but two DLP OGs.

The story is the worst type of average, and the only thing that's kept me reading three chapters deep is sheer disbelief that people with Taure and Download's pedigree consider the fic to be readable.

It features a depiction of a charming Harry as characterized by a social recluse with vague memories of Hans Solo from Star Wars, and some of the most irritating IndyHarry-esque characterizations I have ever seen.

 

Yes, yes, roleplaying as pretentious douchebags can be fun, if a bit 2008, but ultimately if you take this view seriously you will just never read anything. Because for all its many flaws, Clean Slate is still top 5% fanfic compared to the absolute dross which is the true average.

"Actually worth reading" does not mean "this fic is actually good". Because there's maybe 3 or 4 fanfics in the whole fandom which count as actually good. "Actually worth reading" just means "this fic has at least one positive element" - which the vast majority of fics do not. In the case of Clean Slate, the positive elements are the competently executed action and the fact that the secondary characters do not all worship at Harry's feet.

 

@Taure I wasn't trying to be edgy or anything, I just think the fic has zero redeeming qualities, and I was a bit surprised that you liked it because you're, well, you.

I'll just chalk it up to the author managing to target my specific peeves then.
