Jim is a alternative name for James.

Even if it is an alternative of James, you just can't change the name of a character. Changing James Potter to Jim Potter, would be the same as to change it to Bob Potter.

There is no excuse to call Arthur anything other than Arthur... Its just blatant idiocy.
Alastair I can understand, cause that's how its normally spelt, but Alister ain't that common as far as I know.
Hmm, I've just looked it up, and it is Moony, which I was lead to believe it wasn't... Curious. I'm gonna go look this up some more.

Was there a reason he called James, Jim? I know a couple of James who prefer being called Jim or are more well known as Jim. The fact that it is an alternative name, may not make it good but at least it isn't something like irrelevant to the actual character or a misspelling of the original name - the key word in that sentence is original.

Two of the most prevalent misspellings are Pomphrey in place of Pomfrey and McNair instead of Macnair.

And there is a massive difference between old fics written before bits were known versus instances where the author just makes no effort. I mean pre-OotP it seemed like Mrs. Figg was Sirius' secret girlfriend half the time. Just because a fic is posted after book X's release date, doesn't mean it wasn't written, conceived, and set in fanfic literary stone before then (like say, the majority of female!Blaise fics which came before JKR ever announced it in an interview or if you prefer made it official in HBP).

What about when they call Moody, Alastar Moodey. That one always gets me. Or better yet, they call Mcgonagall, Minevra MicGonegal.

How am I wrong. Name change is name change. Doesn't mather to what name they change it.

Only diffirence can be if Jim was used as a nickname. But if they really changed his real name from James name to Jim, then it's not diffirent then to change it to something else.

James is always, without fail, referred to as James. There's no Jimmy, Jim, Jimbo, Jim-Bob because that's not his name. So, to call him Jim in a fanfiction is to incorrectly name the character, and thus, it IS similar to calling him Bob, or Steve, or Frank, or whatever.

I notice that the majority of the names your on about are wrong with the first name.

But recently, I've came across storie sin which Alastor Moody is actually called Alastor Mad-Eye as his actual, real name. Not a nickname.

    Although- Ginger Weasley? Lol.
