I think we have 'Awesomely Bad Fics' for this sort of thing.

I could barely even force myself to skim through the fucking thing. What I did read made me want to punch infants in the face with brass knuckles. I know I'm only re-iterating what everyone else has already said, but... *strangled scream of frustration*.

    3/5

There were some parts that were 5/5, and others that were...well, a -234 would be too high a score.

    Three things that I HATED:

    1. the epilogue (Albus Severus?! You have GOT to be kidding me!)

    2. the three Super!Items that helped on his quest (I actually started hitting my head on the nearest wall when I read that passage - the sheer stupidity of it was astounding)

    3. Harry's overly numerous bouts of internal monologue (I like to "get inside a character's head" as much as the next person, but it seemed like I was living there full time!)

Am I the only person here who actually enjoyed the book? Not all of it, mind you, but on the whole, I think it was decent. The story was compelling, if contrived (but I expected as much), with that blend of humour and tragedy that is the trademark of JKR, and it had some good emotional moments. The only parts that I really downright hated were the Epilogue and The Prince's Tale. Oh, and we never find out what Dudley saw when he met the dementors, and I was so looking forward to that. Therefore, my rating is 3.5/5.

I did enjoy most of it. Like you said, it has really good emotional moments to it, and the majority of the action scenes were pretty good, but the three things I listed above were what killed it for me.

If I liked Harry/Ginny pairings and badly ripped off RPG cliches, then I would definitely give this book a 5/5. But since I don't...

If you tear off the epilogue, I will reluctantly give 1.5/5, and that is because I have to save 1/5 for HBP. Actually the quality difference is much higher than that, but I have to save higher ratings for other books, let's make it a logarithmic scale.

If you didn't before, check out this review that was mentioned before in the spoiler thread but was deleted at the request of Scholastic and then reposted. It sums up the whole experience quite accurately, especially the bits about the characters trying to justify the criticism to the previous books.

Look, guys, JKR is not a good fiction writer, did you expect any better? Her plot or character development are simply pitiful. She has an awesome imagination that can come up with hundreds of funny clever bits but then she is unable to cook up anything coherent with it. Book One is blindingly brilliant, the rest feel simply like nostalgia band tours.

Which is the reason why HP fanfic is the most thriving one, because there are so many people out there frustrated about how JKR has poorly wasted sparkling gems like the "Monster Book of Monsters", Quidditch or the whole owl post system.

Ditto with the movies. They make good entertainment, the FX's are awesome (my mouth is still hanging after the Buckbeak experience,) but there is more acting in Richard Harris' pinky finger nail than in the whole rest of the cast. The genuine awe in his voice when he expresses his admiration of phoenixes in CoS leaves the rest of the cast as pathetic clowns.

So I'll give the lady her due and wait for some quality fanfiction.

I haven't read it yet, but were there at least some things in the book that could be useful for fanfiction like nonverbal casting was in HBP?

Ron the rapist huh? And LOL at manipulative Dumbledore. It's like she did a 180 in this last book.

I'll come back and edit this once I've read Deathly Hallows.

What did it for me was the truck sized plot hole. Hermione says that she modified the memories of her parents so that they would be safer and then on page 138 she says that she's never used a memory charm before.

Begs the question, how did she change her parents memories. I mean, there are muggle ways but the geneva convetions have things to say about those...

I was pissed that my favorite character died. Aside from that, and the rushed ending, I thought it was pretty good. 4/5.

I liked it for the most part. It was far better than HBP which is below the pit.
It wasnt quite up to par with Sorcerer's Stone but it is on par with GOF and PoA in my mind. Snape that we have bitched, and screamed, and fought over basicly got screwed over royally. Dumbledore turned out far worse than most of us probably dared to dream.

    Things I liked:
    1. Neville coming outta his shell
    2. Harry coming outta his shell
    3. The explaination of why in the hell Dumbledore trusted Snape.
    4. The Dragon riding
    5. overall I liked it
    Things I didnt like
    1. Fred's death
    2. Moody's death
    3. Ron being a Parsel Tongue
    4. epilogue
    5. H/G and the kids
    6. Griphook

    The Good:
Gringott's, Muggle-born registration (i.e. Escape from the ministry), Battle of Hogwarts, the Weasley Wedding (shipping aside, am I the only one that was amused that Krum got cockblocked by Ron, then Harry?).

    The Bad:
The neverending Horcrux hunt (the shit with Harry and Hermione "camping" took FOREVER... and they never got anywhere). Ron punking out. Harry being a retard (We HAVE to go to Godric's Hollow... I forgot that I can't say "Voldemort"... fuck off Remus, we're doing great without your help...). The meta (e.g. Harry noting that he essentially wasted all of his time with DD, Aberforth talking about how DD fucked Harry over by not properly preparing him, etc...)

I groaned when it was revealed that Snape's underlying motive this entire time was his luuurve for Lily Evans (*barf*), because what was doing was less like love and more like an ostentatious, self-destructive, emo infatuation (a la Kinsfire. Essentially: "I'm going to kill myself so you can see how much I love you."). I'm supposed to believe that Snape loved Lily, but couldn't bring himself to be civil to her child... RIGHT.

There was some other stuff. One thing that I found interesting (for lack of a better word) is that JKR muddied some of her messages:

Prior to DH there was definitely an element of "The way wizards treat magical creatures is wrong"... and then Harry goes and makes a plan to fuck over Griphook, and casts Imperius on another goblin. Niiiiiice.

As much as I'm sure that Dumbledore (and Molly Weasley) will be pilloried for their heavy-handed efforts on behalf of the "greater good," Hermione is guilty of the exact same thing (w.r.t. keeping her parents safe), but I gather that it's supposed to be okay when *she* does it...

We're supposed to believe that "our choices" that make us good (or evil), but there's every indication that Voldemort was born bad.

Problems aside, if this were fanfiction then the quality of writing alone would probably earn it a spot in the library 4/5.
