Almost any of those things can be done well enough that I'll like it

Leader!Harry, Independent!Harry, training!Harry, they all can work. Or an author can ruin them by rushing it and over-powering Harry. Everything, in my opinion, is about;

1) Plot
2) Pacing
3) Characterization
4) Setting/Idea/Plot points

In that order. Everyone seems to work backwards however...

Not sure if this is mentioned. Do any of you hate those stories with Harry hanging around some OC during the summer and end up joining a band and when he goes back to Hogwarts he will start acting OOC and all students will think he is cool?

 

Oh god, I read a story like that. It started off ok, Harry met a girl, saving her from Dudley and his gang. Then he turned goth. Then he went to raves. Then he got a guitar--and the final nail in the coffin? THE GUITAR WAS POSSESSED BY THE GHOST OF A WIZARD.

It was like a train wreck--I couldn't turn away, despite the agonized screams.

 

All things involving norse mythology, the exeption being Handmaidens of Oden. No, Harry does not follow Jack and Gill up the hill and find Oden's Eye. Its gone. Period.

Why does everyone hate Canon!Harry? Its the best FF has to offer.

We dislike Cannon Harry because he only lives up to a fraction of his potential.

 

Because he is a whiny bitch who would rather mope around instead of actually doing something to prepare himself for the future. What kind of human being finds out they are destined to kill the greatest dark wizard ever not do anything to help himself?

We, or at least I, like a Harry that takes control, has power, and isn't afraid of hurting his enemy etc. Instead CanonHarry uses Disarming and stunning spells against enemies that use lethal magic, and just sits on his ass waiting for Dumbledore to whistle for him.

As Manatheron said, he has so much potential, but instead he throws it away to have fun playing Quidittch. Hell, James Potter played Quidittch and was still very skilled.

There has always been one other thing that has bothered me about canon Harry. He grew up in the muggle world not knowing anything about magic, finally the day comes and he finds out about this amazing thing called magic. What really irked me is Harry's lack of enthuse when he got to Hogwarts. Tell me, if you found out you were a wizard tomorrow, wouldn't you be itching to learn everything you could? Instead Harry takes it like a normal kid going to the 6th grade who hates doing math so he doesn't try.

Cripes, and just moments after I saw that, I ran into an Obi-Wan/Anakin fic.

 

In DH, Harry is tossing out Unforgivables left and right.

People's attempt at Canon!Harry (I'm so sad about Sirius, now I'm a cutter, etc.) is usualy terrible. But in DH, Harry does take contol.

 

Canon!Harry rocks in DH. Imperius? Crucio? He turns into a stronger wizard and person while still retaining the personality that makes him who he is. People may want a certain slytherin-quality out of him, but realistically that's not who he is.

EDIT: A new one, at least to me: Singing. When people sing. The authors obviously are trying to create depth, but it only serves to make the characters more artificial and irritating.

 

I know this ones been said before but I cant stand these custom wands when it has 4 different kinds of wood each from some random long extinct tree with some half a paragraph description and it has many different cores with things like crystallized dementor blood and the tear of some insanely powerful demon. Those just bother me as well as when people try to write Manipulative!Dumbledore but then they cant ever come up with anything original that makes him manipulative beyond the standard he steals Harry's money, he knew about the Durseleys and so on.

The only original manipulation I ever saw was one where he altered the prophecy to save his grandson's life but the rest of it was an H/G crapfest so I got sick of it very quickly

 

Rape as the basis of a relationship. I'm not kidding, fangirls actually think one can enter a relationship with someone who one just raped... what... the... fuck?

What kind of basis to a relasionship is "Oh, you just raped me but I know you feel bad and I kind of liked it so now we're in LURVE!!!" ?

 

When a girl writes about a man raping a woman the man is in a lot of cases a hottie the girl herself would like to fuck but due to the social stigma and repressed sexuality of women (still) manifests in a dream where she cannot be reproached. Then it's a simple matter of according the male redeeming qualities so that the woman will have an excuse to show her angelic goodness by nursing him back to normalicy through the pain and suffering.
Basically a sex scene veiled as rape even though it's fully consentual in her psyche.

Then there's the rapes involving drunk dirty old men with 200 STD's and those well..

 

And they say MEN have a fucked up sexuality... and what about the GAY rape relationships? What kind of psychological nightmare creates that?

 

Maybe the author is the one who should be locked in an insane asylum.

 

All kinds of emo/goth!Harry with a cutting complex. I hate those. The worst of all, though, is that the cutting has nothing to do with the story whatsoever, and it's written in a lame way.

"Harry won the Quidditch game. Then, he went in front of the mirror and rolling his sleeve up, proceeded to cut himself. Then he went to sleep"

Now, the cutting alone is already bad, but the cutting with no consequences is even worse.
