Granted, that is a problem. Does anyone know the output for slash fics posted per day? I think it'll be worth it future slash fics will be diverted from the rest of fanfiction.

    Slash Filter

This is a really nice thought and I like the idea but Ive tried this more than once and all I got was a little short message about discrimination or some other nonsense. I didnt really read much past the request declined bit

Let the authors 'mark' there fics as slash or not, just like they mark the pairing/characters.

Yea that would be good but you forget fangirls tend to hyperventilate in their excitement when they write the shitbaby fics and forget trivial little things like warning folks who might actually read their work by accident

Unfortunately I can readily see them refusing this idea by claiming thats what the C2's are for *cough* bull$h!# *cough*. This would have to be a massive petition, and it would require us to acquire a massive amount support from the "Racidly Fruity" writers on ff.net

That and I think the adm of that site seems to have vested some effort into removing the ability of readers to rate/screen the stories before they read them.

I was livid when they removed the sort by number of reviews option. Considering the sheer number of HP stories (and drivel) it was the main reason I found the works of jbern and nonjon, and thru them this site and all you lovely (ie. sane) people.

    @LorgusMage~
They could make the field required, so that the fic isn't posted until its filled out, and fics already in progress have to be put in a field before they can be updated. (consider it part of the K->M rating system)
Intentionally deceiving the readers *could* be used as cause for being banned or the such. (Okay that's wishful thinking. )

FanFiction.net is the largest fanfiction site. It is not a fanlisting, it is not DLP's personal dump area nor is it particularly biased against anything other than M+ rated stories (NC-17).

This is essential. There needs to be one, single place where you can pretty much post anything under the sun and you seem to forget you're a minority in the fandom.

It's great to be arrogant but FanFiction caters to more than just 3,000 who fap religiously to independent!Harry or brilliant!Harry who usually is shagging some chick. And to forget that is to be rather stupid. I've never supported making FanFiction.Net anything other than what it already is.

You people take for granted the service FFN provides. It is without a doubt, the single, consistent place where one can post, find and enjoy a story of some quality, of some calibre. It is rarely down and though it suffers from problems, places like FicWad are down constantly.

To add a 'Slash' filter is to discriminate towards a majority it caters to. You seem to forget what started FanFiction and its history. Places like FictionAlley and part of the reason FanFiction.Net got popular is because of slash writers. The first stories were slash, the more popular stories are slash and the slash-base is far more easy to incite than DLP.

People like Cassandra-Claire who likes slash and who was a big person in FF helped make certain that atmosphere remained.

Another important thing to remember is most of you are a bunch of boys amongst girls. Realistically, writing and the cult-devotion that spawns fanfiction is undertaken by women. That's why there's so much of it. Men aren't a majority and frankly, just like in Baseball and Football and Basketball, I don't expect to be catered to just because I enjoy it.

Take a moment to think your aims through. This site provides a library that searches and finds fanfiction that its members want to read. It's rare we miss too much that isn't of a good quality and you seem to be pandering something that's not in our control, won't be in our control and shouldn't be in our control as a minority.

If you want to strive to create something for DLPers, ask Raven if you can help him on PC. Otherwise, as they say, deal with it.

You're forgetting that a slash filter wouldn't just help non-slashers filter out slash, but also slashers filter out het.

So even if FF.net is pro-slash, it's good for the slashers too.

It doesn't discriminate in any way, it's just another filter, no different to the pairings filters or the genre filters.

The only reason why there's no point discussing it is that it is unpractical, both due to the large backlog of unmarked stories and the difficulty in drawing a line in what is defined as slash (would, for instance, all stories containing homosexual pairings count, or just those featureing the main character as homosexual?).

I would definitely go for something like this. Half of FFNet's Authors are most likely fangirls that get minor orgasms thinking about writing gay pairings with shitbabies...in any case, I have to agree that it would benefit from both sides.

I don't think slashers have a problem with heterosexual FF like we have with slash.

They would see it as a front, I think. But true on the last point.

I find myself completely agreeing with BioPlague's post.

And I feel dirty admitting that.

But this is the exact same bitching and moaning that will go on forever. It wasn't even two months ago that we had another discussion on this ridiculously redundant and pointless topic. Here's the most recent one, where you can read most people's thoughts on the subject: [link removed because of merge]

EDIT: Just because it's so damn similar I even merged this with the last one.

lol No wonder it jumped up to 4 pages. I saw that an I'm like wtf? It went to 4 pages already? Oh well...better idea to merge them anyway.

Excuse me, but as a 17 year old fanboy, I can't stand pure femmeslash. That's why so little of it exists. The ratio of femmeslash to Harry/Multi is shoved way into the polygamous side. Girls just can't picture themselves as a slut because they're insecure and society doesn't readily accept female sluts, like it does male sluts.

Yaoi started because girls in Japan couldn't readily picture a boy being submissive to a female, but they still wanted to see submissive boys. So, they started writing about/drawing yaoi in order to fulfill that demand. American girls, however, don't have that excuse. They're just insecure fangirls who aren't threatened by the though of two guys making out, because making it a girl and a guy pushes them out of the picture, as they can't exactly make the female character ugly. They make characters gay because they can't bring themselves to the realization that guys like hot women.

So if your gay/a girl who gets off reading slashy smut, I say good on ya, no different than me watching girl on girl scenes in porn. But fangirls who read/write slash romances are just deluding themselves and protecting themselves. Mature girls tend to not like slash because they want to be able to put themselves in the picture, immature (coughuglycough) girls tend to write/read slash.

Most romantic fics in general are crap. As virtually all slash fics are romantic fics in some way (or else there'd be no point to the slash), they have a high ratio of crap to non-crap. Good fics usually don't revolve around romance, because romance is hard to write.

Edit: That being said, I can't see a slash filter ever being implemented by FF.net, and I really don't care if they do or not. Most people put warnings up, or the slash is plainly seen in the summery. If it's not plainly seen, chases are the slash is minor, or not important (as slash usually = romance, it's easy to spot them).

Okay, I think most of us can agree that as much as a slash filter would be appreciated, its a pipe dream.

Perhaps we can go about it another way. Instead of a petition to get ff.net to install a slash filter on their internal search engine, we could compose a offsite database/search engine for DLP members to use to search ff.net

We could manufacture a small (okay maybe not so small) database linking a story's ID # with its status as slash/nonslash/femmeslash or the such. Then a member could do an offsite search of ff.net HP stories and if available he/she would get a slash "status" along with the search results.

And yes i do realize that I am grossly simplifing this idea. The effort and time required just to catogorize the daily updates to the HP story archieve is more than enought to kill this little thought (Um, we could make the noobs do it?) So please feel free to poke holes in this, or come up with something better, please! Finding a decent way to filter thru all the slash would make dealing with ff. net so much easier.

I dropped a small message to them about a week ago out of frustration of so many slash fics. Instead of just mentioning separating slash I made sure to also mix in het and gen too.

I also said that if they can't do that is there a possibility of a rule stating that a author must state in the summary if a fic is het, slash, or gen.
