Lol, agree about the beard thing. I know only one story with bearded Harry - Manipulator of Destiny by Whizzy-something - but since Harry's a pussy there, it doesn't count as a cool-independent-Che-like-beard!Harry.

BTW, seems like this sort of threads invariably turn towards people spitting out whatever first comes to their mind. Real cliches, that the thread founder can actually use in his story, were likely exhausted in the first couple of posts.

 

I guess I'll be the wanker that admits that, without at least a few of the devices that have become cliches, most stories would be dull as mud and as dry as week old toast.

There are some interesting, stand-out fics that don't use them and there are some well-written, fics that do use them but strategically so.

But yeah, most people toss around cliches like beads during fuckin' Mardi Gras; mostly because they can't write for shit and never had an original thought in their lives.
