What do you think was the bravest or most courageous moment in the Harry Potter series, or who was the bravest character?

If I had to choose, I would say when Harry was walking to his death in Deathly Hallows, when he knew he had to die.

What else can you say? I mean, it was so courageous and noble that he was allowed to come back to earth if he chose to. Not much else you can pick from.

Yeah, thats the thing... it was absolutely a sefless act. The main thing though, is that he probably would have walked into death for much less.

That shit wasn't brave. That was just stupid. I mean, I can see where most of you are coming from but, that's just suicidal.

I think fighting off hundreds of soul-sucking, fear inspiring Dementors in order to save yourself and your Godfather is, not only more courageous, but much more intelligent.

I would say the whole CoS was pretty brave albeit stupid. Fighting a 50 foot snake at the age of 12 seems to be the bravest thing in the books. The dementor scene while brave I wouldn't consider that brave because of the time travel. He already knew the outcome and thus I don't think it's that brave.

Going out with Ginny was probably the bravest thing.

Joking aside, turning to face Voldemort in the graveyard in GoF is up there, as was Lily's sacrifice, and Neville gets a mention for facing Voldemort and killing Nagini

Choosing to come back to life was defo the bravest and most courageous moment in the series. No, I'm not talking about Voldemort. **** Voldemort. I'm talking about coming back to face a lifetime of friendship with Roonil "PUSSY" Wazlib and a marriage to the Ho.

God, I'd rather have stayed dead, no questions about it. You go, Harry.

Now that I think about it, is it really brave to do all those things when he obviously cares very little wether or not he gets injured or dies? I'm trying to think of a time were he was absolutely petrified to do something, but did it anyway, im not having any luck.

Most of his acts are lets save her! or lets save him! or lets stop him! but none he stops and thinks about not doing it because of fear. Ron may just be more brave, for he seemed to be terrified when anything happens.

Maybe the dragon in the first task? I believe he was terrified then, and I'm sure he could have said, "Fuck this" and just refused to do anything.

Exactly, bravery is a matter of overcoming your fears. IMO, starting years Harry had too little self-worth or understanding what exactly could happen to her if everything didn't go alright.

    My nominations:

#4th Year - Getting back Cedric's Body. Brave but stupid.
    #4th year - Dragon.
    #5th year - Umbridge's Blood Quill torture.

Blood Quill Torture? That wasn't brave. That was just his enormous stupidity shining through. He could have gone to McGonagall and stopped it, but he was too stubborn. Boo hoo.

Making Dumbledore drink the potion. That would have been terrifying yet he still did even though he didn't want to.

Yeah, but he only did that because he was ordered to.

IMHO, most of what Harry did was down to stupidity, or a sense of rebellion, or even because he was told to, not bravery.

Definition of bravery(unofficial): Doing something noble, stupid, and suicidal and succeeding. You're also a "hero."

I agree with Malaga, Harry never really did anything for himself in the books, except wanting to live with Serius in PoA. Most of the crap he did was certainly out of saving others...minus himself.

I think that Neville has some great courageous moments - I mean, he's obviously scared of a lot. So, if he does something that requires nerve, it seems a lot more meaningful than Harry, blood boiling, impulsively doing the heroic.

For example, in first year, when he tries to stop Harry, Ron, and Hermione from leaving, that's always struck me as very brave. Kids that age, at least in my experience, really really want to fit in.

So, here he is, standing up to his friends, the cooler kids. Talk about peer pressure. Basically, he's willing to be considered a loser to defend his House. That's got to take bravery.

The bravest moment would be at battle in the department of Mystery where it was only Harry and Neville against the remaining DEs. That moment belongs to Neville because he:

    1. was a student facing adults
    2. has been underachieving in pretty much everything at school and had it constantly rubbed in his face.
    3. was not a very powerful or very skillful wizard.
    4. had a broken nose and couldn't speak the spells properly
    5. was facing B. Lestrade, who was one of those that placed his parents in the hospital.

In other words he did not have much of a chance and he knew it. But he tried anyway and fought on. That took guts. More so than what I've perceived Harry has ever shown.

Bravery: The willingness to die in order to live.

Did Harry live in the end? Not really.

Look at the name, it should be obvious.
I would say going to the Department Of Mysteries to "save" Sirius is the bravest.

He had a choice in facing Voldemort again. In GoF he didn't have a choice in facing Voldemort, this time he did. He could have said fuck that I'm not risking my life, yet he chose to face Voldemort again to save his Godfather albeit it was quite stupid but an act of bravery nevertheless.

I wonder how many people in the Potterverse except Dumbledore would voluntarily face Voldemort in order to save someone's life.

Harry was willing to face his death at the hands of Voldemort to save Sirius. It's one of the most courageous acts in the books aside from Harry willingly walking to his death.

One thing Harry got out of all his adventures are nerves of steel. You read Death Hallows and compare his reactions to Hermione's or Ron's. They nearly wet their pants or froze in fear every time while Harry, while afraid, was always able to push his fear down and think calmly.

One thing he has is balls of steel. To some extent.

As for his bravest moment? I don't know. Walking to your death is pretty brave, even if it's stupid. It's something Voldemort would never have the balls to do, since it was his greatest fear.

Hm... facing Voldemort face-to-face in the graveyard? He tried to hide at first but decided to fuck it and walked out to face him. Meh.

No joke, I think that kissing Ginny was one of Harry's bravest moments. Think about it, how many people have the balls to kiss a girl they barely know, who is also your best friends baby sister, and in front of the entire Gryffindor house? That takes some guts to do imo.

Another would be Harry playing his first Quidditch game. A kid who knows next to nothing about the game, youngest in a century, expectations are huge as well as low, and playing in front of the entire school. Most people would piss themselves.
