Neigh and hay are for horses, Nigh and high are adjectives used when aliens are going to destroy the earth.

    For example:

I gave the horse some hay, and it said 'Neigh!'.

"The aliens are coming from on high! The apocalypse is nigh!"

Yes to answer the earlier comment. The Lie I've Lived is Harry/Fleur. I'm trying to take it slow and give Fleur some real depth of character instead of sex kitten treatment.

In Darkness, prior to Fleur's death at Harry's hands, she broke up with Bill and I took the approach that her "gift" actually socially stunted her. She was incapable of dealing with the fact that Bill could resist her and she struggled with her own insecurities - demanding to know about all his previous relationships. Being used to men who were exciting "toys," who eventually lost their entertainment value, she wasn't ready for a real relationship.

In Bungle/TML, she's much more capable of deep relationships and more appreciative of "true" friends who can be around her and not act like fools.

In Lie, she is cold and aloof, preferring to seclude herself either because she's bored of playing with "toys" or she doesn't have enough "true" friends. She could develop either way depending on the course of the story.

When writing Fleur, part of what you should do is really consider how she dealt with her puberty years when boys could be a maximum annoyance or a source of much entertainment as they made fools of themselves for her enjoyment. How does this affect her knowing that she can pretty much have any guy she wants? One of the things I did in Bungle was mention how good she was at memory charms and how many students she obliviated during Harry's fourth year. What happened before she was good enough to repel these unwanted advances?

Think about these things when you start writing Fleur and it'll give you some fuel to really characterize her.

Don't worry, some magic ex machina will solve that, no problem.

If canon's anything to go by, those things grow on trees.

Why not simply have him in an accelerated french-learning class?

Sort of like Subliminal Learning and Hypnopedia?

And Jbern has hit upon a damn good point with Fleur being cold and aloof.

*Ponders* Could you extend that to say that she had been hurt badly by a guy and forces them away so she isn't hurt any more?

Sure why not. It doesn't even have to be physically along the lines of rape. It could be mentally as well. Perhaps one of her previous teachers feigned being able to resist her only to try his own brand of seduction and she felt betrayed by this...

You could even use this to make Fleur wary of the dreaded older man and perhaps making her more open to the "leetle boy" because she would ensure that she was the dominant one controlling the relationship.

That sounds a bit frightening, to tell the truth.

Well, just because that's the way she feels about it and, probably subconsciously, attempts it, doesn't mean it would work out that way.

She could enter a relationship with Harry, thinking (as said before, either consciously or subconsciously) that because she's the older one by a few years, she'll be the dominant, controlling force in the relationship, only to have them turn out to be equals.

After all, Harry may be younger but he's strong-willed. Ignoring whether or not he can truly remain unaffected by a veela's charm if one really tried to nail him with it, he still doesn't go stupid just by being around one, which says a little about his will (if real immunity to the charm were canon, well, that would say even more). Add that he can resist the Imperius, he's stubborn and he's been through situations that would turn other children's minds into so much pudding...

I think by the time Fleur realized that Harry wasn't going to be dominated or controlled that easily*, she'd know and like him well enough that this fact would come as a pleasant surprise, rather than something that would send her looking for another guy.

*(Note: I'm not saying she'd try to use the charm to control him, just that his resistance to it is one piece of evidence that shows he wouldn't be dominated that easily, through the usual methods any human/person in Fleur's position might use)

As far as I go on Fleur characterizations, I really think that she was (is) the abuser with her Veela powers, especially as she went through puberty (although it begs the question, does a Veela develop their powers at puberty or is it always there?) that she, through toying with boys, learned to wield it at least a little (If for a second you believe it's an inescapable aura the Veela have, then consider rereading the World Cup, where the power doesn't seem to effect everyone and doesn't seem to always effect them at particular points). If you consider that she did learn to wield it then, even when some boys are immune, she probably played the dominant one. Finding a proper male, immune to the charm and older, I think allows Fleur to be the submissive one. And it's my opinion that she secretly wants that guy willing to take charge. Younger, older? I don't think it matters. I think the guy that's able to either ignore her charm or work right past it is the one that can snag Fleur.

Sorry for reposting this, but it seemed to slip under the radar with the discussion about Fleur's possible characterizations.

A deputy would be a poor deputy if they couldn't shoulder the responsiblities of a school for a year. At least that's what I would think; deputies are normally picked with the intent of being able to take the headmaster/mistress' place when they can't be there for whatever reason, right ?

As for receiving lessons, they could've (a) taken classes with Hogwarts via translators, (b) had professors portkey/floo/apparate to and from Beauxbaton and Durmstrang, (c) giant two-way mirrors: I refuse to believe James and Sirius had the monopoly on that idea, (d) independent study, with assignments sent via owl.

Could go with the possibility every student had to train for the tournament so that if Fleur was shunted out for some reason, they could Polyjuice and take her place, ensuring a Beauxbonts victory.

    Just an idea :)

It's February 1st, so has anyone finished their 20,000 words stories? Or do we all need another extension?

I actually didn't know anything about this until today, but I've recently completed a story that turned out to be Harry / Fleur. It's currently going through the revisioning process, and has but cut to shards, so it's not ready to be released yet, but I hope soon... I don't want another fiasco like Prodigy to happen.

Anyway, my story takes place in a very AU, one where Harry didn't compete in the Triwzard Tourney, only Cedric, Krum and Fleur did. That's all in the past in my story, though, and most of it takes place in a dystopian world where Voldemort won.

Fluer wouldn't even have been in the story, but I needed characters (everyone else was dead), and OC's seem so out of place in most fic's (jbern's fics come to mind as a notable exception). Then i started thinking about the Triwizard tournyment.

I mean, there is this tendency to really downplay the twt, and I think that's a shame. All that talk about 'Eternal Glory' really becomes meaningless. Fleur obviously gets the shortest end of the stick because she performed so poorly, but there is something I think needs to be pointed out.

In canon, Barty Crouch Jr went out of his way to ensure Harry's victory. Would it really boggle the mind to imagine that Fleur was in the position to flat-out kill in the second task, and that Crouch did something to prevent that? There's a lot of room for development there. Then in the third task, Krum took her out. Because of the outside interference, we never really got to see what Fleur was capable of.

It should really mean something to be a twt champion. I guess that Harry's involvement casts a shadow over it all.

Needless to say, that's the attitude I took in my story, and Cedric, Krum, and Fleur all play a part.

I really like the idea of fleur not being from a rich family. It's something I've not seen before, and that makes it interesting.

One idea I've wanted to explore is that the Delacour's were once rich, but now they are destitute since all their money was taken from them when their descendant married a Veela and corrupted the "pureblood" line.

Fast forward to Fleur. Her family and her are living in poverty and she's barely making the grade's in Beauxbonts. Then the Tri-Wiz Tourney comes up. 1000 Galleons + Fame for her family. Means she has an extra need to win.

Throw in the fact Harry gives her the 1000 Galleons if he wins/ gives her more if they become friends for her family.

Possibly have Fleur become a tutor at Hogwarts/ takes DADA spot (Yes, I hate Umbitch so she should be replaced XD )/ apprentices for a Mastery at Hogwarts...etc etc

    Etc and etc.

*Goes back to smacking Mehrunes Dagon around*

That sounds a bit like the perfect plot for wizarding pornography.

Poor Veela Sex Kitten: How ever shall I pay for tuition?

Boy-who-lived: Gee, I've got 1000 galleons here, wish I had a friend to give them too...

Fleur will be making an appearance in the next chapter of Harry Potter and the Blood Rose.

    I have foreseen it, vlad.
