Yes and the nastiest of the nasty is in th worst summery thread. Some of those fic's are god awful.

learneotadius instrumentius........Harry takes up the guitar and becomes superemorockstar!Harry.

To be fair the author apologized for the shitty spells. On the other side of the coin, he never apologized for writing the god-awful shit in the first place. The only way Harry could kill Voldemort through music is Voldemort topped himself during a my chemical romance tribute.

This was mentioned a little in the first page. I never liked Reducto and Diffindo being able to explode and cut human bodies. I think they are only for destroying or cutting inanimate objects (in canon at least).

Harry used Diffindo to cut Cedric's bag from far away, do you think he would risk cutting his head off accidently if it was possible? :) Besides, if Reducto was able to make humans explode and Diffindo cut them, they would be considered as 'dark' as Sectumsempra spell, but they are simplest spells taught to schoolchildren.

So yeah, I really dislike Reducto and Diffindo being used as combat spells in fics and I think that's stupid. No offence to anyone I hope.

I've never seen an actual incantation for it, but I detest any and all castration hexes. We all know for whom this particularly retarded curse is a fanon favorite:

    ---

"Potter," Lily screamed furiously,"if you [SELECT FROM BELOW] one more time, I swear I will castrate you!"

    A. Ask me out.
    B. Hex Snape/Slytherins
    C. Hex Anybody.
    D. Play a prank.
    E. Breathe.
    ---

I HATE that fucking "hex". If I (as a character) ever got hit by a castration hex, I'd use the same reversal spell performed on wizards who splinch themselves, take a couple of pain relief potions, and be good to go. Or I'd get a silver dick, Pettigrew style, and use it to beat the shit out of whoever was dumb enough to actually cut my balls off.

And realistically (canon-wise, at least), wouldn't threatening to castrate a Pureblood heir be a VERY serious offense to even dare joking about, much less carry out?

You can regrow bones with magic, why not someone's balls?

I assume you're referring to Rorschach's Blot. Ugh. How many times does he have to write Harems? Once or twice is funny, two dozen times is boring and repetitive. Get some new ideas, or get out.

This indeed is one of the biggest no-no's you can make in a fanfic. There are literally legions of fics where all Harry and his friends do is throw around Reducto's all day while fighting death eaters. Fuck, this is so goddamn retarded. Any time I see someone throw a Reducto in a duel, I immediately close the window before the rage takes over and I write a huge flame to the author.

    While disagree, okay not really.
Reducto is used to like clear a path or what ever, right, so it could have uses in a fight, if your running through a corridor trying to get the fuck away from what ever nut job you pissed off, use reducto to blow locks off doors to confuse the Death Eater or who ever, but in a real fight don't use it to kill or incapacitate.

Yes, this is what I meant. I should have stated it more clearly. I'm fine if you are using Reducto to blast apart stone, wood, etc. Any non-biological material is fair game. It might be able to create the effect of a shrapnel grenade when used on the ground or wall next to a wizard. I just have a problem with all the fics where Reducto explodes human body parts. If that was the case it would be classified as dark magic and definitely wouldn't be taught to 3rd and 4th year students.

Reducto blasts should easily be blocked by shields or counter spells. The Killing Curse seems to be the only fool proof method of dueling.

Even then, the Killing Curse isn't fool proof. While a magical shield can't block it, solid objects can. Dumbledore blocked Voldemorts killing curse in OoTP (aimed at Harry) with a statue in the Ministry of Magic. Also, the gravestones in the graveyard at the end of GoF gave Harry some protection from the Killing Curse. It's really not infallible or fool proof if all you have to do is summon an object to intercept the the Killing Curse. Granted, it can be argued that it takes a ton of skill and confidence to not panic and time it right to intercept the spell, but it's highly possible.

About Reducto, any spell can be used offensively given the proper application of creativity.

Now, if you take artistic license and say it throws shrapnel, you could have the Reducto launch something - maybe a fireplace tong - and then have the character followup with a Banishing thing, and send it through someone's stomach.

No offense Andro but Banishings get annoying as well, they are used as well, I suppose you could use it to get rid of an explosive or something but the whole banishing an object in the middle of a fire fight, doesn't seem to a... practical, it is a fourth year spell, just like reducto.

None taken. It has gained that "special" status. Writers use it under the mistaken impression that it's sophisticated and creative, but it falls flat.

I'm not a hypocrite since when I wrote that, the fellow that got the tong through the arm promptly vanished it, sealed up the wound, and carried on.

The most terrible spell I encountered was in The Office: "Petrificus Totalus Rapus Easius", but I have the feeling that it was intentional.

Duplicus. It was in this story that I can't find anymore, but it had Harry duplicating every single book in the library and stuffing it down his bag. If you could just duplicate something, wouldn't someone have just duplicated the Elder Wand and possessed one too? Why would people actually buy more than one pair of robes of the same design when they could just duplicate it?

One of the things that I wonder about is why the petrifying spell is "Petrificus Totalus." Why add the total in there at all? The only answer I could come up with for that was when you just say petrify and it hits any part of your body, you die instantly because only the area where the spell hit you is petrified and blood can pass through anymore and the rest of your body can't get oxygen...so you die.

Further, why couldn't Voldemort duplicus random DEs, and form a horde the size of Mordor?

Or why hasn't Ginny Weasley used duplicus on Harry, and used the copy to perform bizarre sex rituals on?

Heh, I think I might have the write a story about this. "Harry Potter and the Clone of Harry Potter". Yeah, that sounds about right for ff.net. All it needs are more stories with "Harry Potter" in the title.
