Although it never specifically states that you require a dark mark to bypass the ward, it's just Harry's assumption. Or it might overlook werewolves. Lupin never tried to bypass it.

The first scene of DH where Snape and Yaxley pass into Malfoy Manor by holding up their left arms strongly supports it.

Or JK would have been too busy writing a crap book to pay attention to detail?

Yeah, but since when has that stopped us arguing about it?

    Haha. I suppose.

Was it just me that thought that JK should have taken her magic in a completely different way? Aside from Voldemort's taboo and cursing of the DADA position, we don't get to see any awesome long-term magic that one might associate with spells etc. Everything seems so fickle and temporary and pathetic. She started off well, I mean, there are cursed items, such as Sonnets of a Sorcerer, or the book that burns your eyes out, but to curse an idea or a word; it could have gone so much further.

It isn't much of a risk. There's no reason whatsoever to believe that pre-Hogwarts muggleborn children receive any notice, let alone protection, from the Ministry. A quick flick of a wand, and a little boy falls off his bicycle and under the wheels of a car. A little girl might the victim of a random Imperiused stranger. If the murderer is worried about accidental magic protecting his target, do something that hits fast - and remember that the hardest murders to solve are the stranger-to-stranger killings.

So why didn't Justin Finch-Flechley, Hermione Granger, Colin & Dennis Creevy, Dean Thomas, etc not get assassinated by Umbridge or whoever you're suggesting goes off to kill mudbloods?

Hmm...I would say that you're underestimating Aurors and the MoM. In times in which there isn't a Dark Lord fighting against them, they seem to be quite effective.

The potential power the Ministry wields can be seen in the way that Voldemort's Ministry wtfpwns all opposition.

And if the Ministry doesn't pay attention to Muggleborns (which I'm not entirely convinced of) then this would also mean that anyone wanting to find and kill Muggleborns would have to do so by breaking into Hogwarts. This is most certainly not a safe thing to do...

OK, let's assume that someone has access to the records that identify magical children before they receive their Hogwarts letter. That person could pass on that information, (names, locations [at least in general,] and "blood status") to interested parties.
Who are the interested parties? Well, let's think about this. Presuming that Harry, Ron, Dean, Seamus, Neville, Hermione, Lavender, and the Patil girl were the entire intake group for Gryff House, and that there weren't any others who simply were never mentioned, that's eight total.
Sly House got Draco, Pansy, Crabbe, Goyle, Blaise, Nott, Millicent, Daphne, and Davis, right? Nine more.
I can't remember offhand how many children were Sorted into Raven and Puff, but let's assume a fairly even split - leaving lots of room for error, we'll say twelve each. That means that the Entire Incoming Class is forty-one students.

Not many. Not enough to keep the population going. Where are all the others? Home-schooled, educated overseas, hiding? Can't afford tuition?

I'm still failing to see any real evidence for your idea...

And house intake is 10 people per house, per year. If we take Harry's year as typical.

Also, what proof do you have that a community into which 41 people are born each year cannot sustain itself?

Even if there were 200+ students in Harry's year who got murdered before they ever arrived in the wizarding world, there would still be only 41 entering the wizarding world, clearly the wizarding world is still there, so that makes no sense.

You might expect there to be fewer of Harry's generation because 11 years earlier a fairly sizable chunk of all the young people died, but in James' year there were apparently only four Gryffindor boys, so who knows?

    I'm thinking.
We never hear about any other magical schools in the UK. There is no mention of day schools, primary schools, post-grad schools, or medical/veterinary/business/law schools. Most fanficcers assume that after graduating from Hogwarts, the young adults enter apprentice-type training programs and/or On-the-Job-Training (usually called OJT in the States.)
If no one has noticed a shortage of incoming muggleborns, then maybe there isn't a deep, murderous conspiracy. I'm not about to try to work out the Doubling Rate of the Wizarding population: I don't remember enough of my statistics training, and we have insufficient data, anyway.

    Flee for your lives children!

We are lead to believe that there are none, can you see Hermione passing up the opportunity to learn even more once Voldemort is dead?

    I find it unlikely.

Plus JKR said in an interview that not only is Hogwarts the only school in the UK, there also are no magical universities. Most likely because even the NEWTs are too hard for most people (thus their name).

    That's in the Lexicon.
Seriously though, I like Taure, even though we have our disagreements, he's always been nice to me and I quite like his presence on these forums, but what's with all the brownosing of him lately. It's like people on this forum always need someone to kowtow to--first Giovanni, and now Taure.

That's not strictly true. I do recall one nasty comment I sent your way that I still regret.

Lol, I think as many people hate me as love me :) I don't ever recall people loving Gio though...

Not really. I'm still caught out every now and then. I just have crazy recall when it comes to HP...if only it were to carry over to Economics...

What do you mean by it becoming subconscious? The only thing that comes my mind being even close is muscle memory...
Edit: Shit, sorry! If Necro, I humbly apologize...

I'd like to start by apologising for a possible 'necro', however rather then start a new thread for this post I thought it better to continue on this thread, seeing as it was the source of so much on topic debate.

I was trying to sleep last night, and for some fucked up reason I remembered this thread and how it shaped my whole perception of the HP-verse magical system. However, a sudden anomaly popped into my head; energy.

I am assuming you all know the basic principles of physics and note here that I admit physics is not my strong point, that energy cannot be created/destroyed etc. So, my question, is that through your system of magic, where does the 'energy' come from to supply the light for spells, the sound, or, in for a penny in for a pound, the actual effect of the spell?

Example; we all know a stunner creates a red light. That is something described in the books. I am sure nearly every fanon I have read involves 'beams of light' as a description of spells somewhere, and this stems from cannon and the spells described there. So, where does the energy come from to give off 'light energy'?

Just a query, and again I apologise for those who wanted to let the thread die (and if this idea has already been covered, but I am short of time this morning and wanted to put this idea out here, so I couldn't read through each post).

    Dark-Stallion.
