Dementors

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by DementorsRule, Mar 12, 2008.

  1. Where did J.K Rowling get the Dementor idea from? I mean feeling hopeless, trapped and like you will never be cheerful again. It was such a cool idea. I just wondered... Sorry This thread was short. Thanks for the help.

Uhh, an introduction in the intro thread would be cool?

She probably got it from Tolkien or some shit. Stole the Wraiths idea.

Or the Shades from Greek Mythology (Hades' realm)

She got that idea while being raped by a tranny at night in a dark street somewhere in London.

JKR said once she got the idea from her own experiences with depression. Essentially she personified it.
The name comes from the english demented or the latin demens.
What Ragin said sounds good and the only thing I can think of to add would be the dementor's resemblance to the Grim Reaper.

Also, you should really post an intro or you'll have some members getting on your back for not introducing yourself.

Dementers are about as original as the Deathly Hallows.

Nazgul are much more powerfull than these pesky dementors... However they seem the same, the Nazgul cause feeling of fear, dread and hopelessness (I seem to remember reading that Tolkien thought of the effect of bombardement in war when he wrote them) and dementors cause a person to relive their worse memories, not fear, just despair and sadness.

So while the dementors are similar to the Nazgul, and JKR probably picked the idea there, I think that she just tweaked them a bit to make them mimick the aspect of depression.

    Dementor, an emo's best friend.

Inspiration was most likely part Nazgul, part depression, part wraiths encountered often in mythology. She probably toned their power down to avoid Super!Dementor and have children crying and slitting their wrists in the middle of the night. Because, god knows we need to tone down everything, lest someone gets scared.

I don't think I would have enjoyed a super!Dementor however. I prefer wizards to be at the top of the food chain.

All the above answers are valid, except perhaps Inky's (but we love him anyway). I shall, however, however expound on the "depression theory".
JKR said in some interview (and her biography I think) that they were inspired by depression, and to give her some credit, her writing was still top-notch at the time (so I'll accept it as fact).
More evidence she based them on depression is the whole "eating chocolate makes you feel better".
    Eating chocolate helps depressed people for a few reasons, the three most important being;
    1. They're fat bastards who like eating chocolate (I myself fit into this category).
    2. The pleasurable flavour and texture make the brain release endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals in the brain that increase pleasure and decrease pain, sort of like your own free 'n legal opiates (The key difference being that opiates use morphine to make ya' feel better. Endorphins latch onto receptors in the nervous system and prevent pain causing chemicals from transmitting their message to the brain)
    3. Foods high in carbs and low in protein boost the amount of serotonin in the brain. It is believed that depressed people are lacking in serotonin. Chocolates has a lot of carbohydrates that boost the serotonin content. This theory is debatable however, as chocolate has a high protein content as well, and some scientists believe this prevents serotonin production.
Chocolate isn't really good for much else (except perhaps for getting your wife to forgive you for diddling her best friend, but that doesn't always work:(), so it logically follows that the dementors are probably depression.

Haha, never thought about the whole chocolate-eating thing, but it makes sense when put in context with Rowling's bout of depression. Guess it's just a bit of clever self-insertion there.

With the whole chocolate releasing endorphins thing...does this mean that in theory you could get high from eating enough chocolate?

I mean surely you'd die before you coul eat enough to achieve a really noticeable effect, but is it technically plausable to achieve a marijuana-like high from chocolate?

And thank you Oz for finding a perfectly scientific solution to the whole 'chocolate makes super evil things stop working therefore is magic' thing. Kudos.

I think it's the same thing as with eating carrots making you orange. Before you manage to eat enough chocolate to get high, you will vomit your stomach contents on Mollywobbles from all the chocolate you have eaten. For any enthusiasts, however, feel free to try. And remember, pics or it didn't happen.

I live to please Mr. Cajun. I live to please.
If you want to experience an endorphin high, go running for a few hours. It's not the same as a mari-wotsit high (not addictive and doesn't addle your brain), but a runners high has been described as being almost orgasmic in nature. I have no idea if you can get high off of chocolate, but I suppose it's possible considering all the chemicals in it.

Go running for a few hours? That gives you orgasmic feelings?

I must admit I'm stunned. It sounds very interesting.

On a side note, as a campaigner for marijuana legalisations I'd like to pop in and say marijuana is rarely addictive to a harsh extent and the addling of the brain is only in cases of frequent and long time users :)

Unless you meant it addles during the high. In which case its fun and no one cares. But remember kids...don't do drugs!

It tends to vary from person to person, but quite a few have described it as almost orgasmic. Personally I've never experienced it, just the "Oh my God my chest is going to explode and not in a good way!" feeling.

Yeah that's the sort of thing I get too. Must be the orgasmic monster-in-the-chest syndrome

It had to be said. Maybe someone should have mentioned this perfectly viable alternative to Harry. Whenever he wanted to feel the monster in his chest he should have got someone to whip him as he ran around and around the Lake. It would certainly have prevented certain unwanted events.

I've felt the runners high quite a few times before. This was when I was in top physical condition before I injured my knee. I ran at least 2 miles a day. It's hard to describe, but it is a lightheaded feeling somewhat similar to the high you get from smoking weed. It doesn't last nearly as long as weed, but it feels hella nice after your exhausted from pounding the pavement for 35 minutes.

I think I might've felt it before, but that could also be hallucination as a result of exhaustion. Maybe a build-up of lactic acid makes you high.

I think that the Dementors came out of the fact that JKR needed something to take away from the overly happy and joyful tone of the books. Even when she tries to write darker things onto her story, it always seems so happy. Those are my thoughts on Dementors
