    I can't see HP fanfiction dying, not with all the opportunities for franchise and more moo-lah for JKR. Eventually there will be a HP animated show on Cartoon Network or something and there will be a huge surge of cannon crapfiction and with that could come the occasional good fic.

    Why oh why do they continue to find ways to slaughter Harry Potter?!?!

    This is only because I doubt the series will be good. Due to the fact it will probably just be a shitty television version of the movies

    I remember the TV series they did based on the "Nero Wolfe" mysteries by Rex Stout. It was the stuff of nightmares. I was and am a HUGE fangirl of Rex Stout.

    Fanfiction is sustained by canon. Since JKR has finished her series, the well will eventually dry out. That probably will not happen for at least another 5 years however.

    HP fanfiction will be around for a while, even if most of these stories are drivel written by mindless twits who forget to use the spell check function on their word processor. By that time, some other fanon will have emerged to take its place. Hopefully, one that doesn't have as many slash authors.

    I think there's also the matter of the audience.

    Our generation (late teens -> early twenties) is the one that grew up with HP. I remember reading it back in 3rd grade, and then waiting anxiously for EVERY. OTHER. BOOK. after it. I think we have a tighter bond to HP than, say, a 10-year-old now who's just starting the series. To that 10-year-old, it's just a fantasy series, one of numerous others out there.

    But to us, it was really a part of life for the, what, 16 years it took for Rowling to finish the series?

    Our generation is the one most dedicated to canon and probably the one most active in the realm of HP fanfiction. The heart-and-soul of the fanbase, so to speak.

    But eventually, we'll grow out of it.

    And that's when the HP fandom will wheeze out its last breaths.

    Fire... Fire is good!

    Seriously though, yes I sadly agree with you, Fanfiction just doen't hold my attention like it used to...

    {Tear}

    Dunno why... Probably I'm just tired of reading the same plots written with various levels of skill (or lack thereof) No matter how good the writer, there are only so many Time Travel/ Dimension shift/ Indipendent/ Dark... well you get the point... after a while it gets too easy to guess what's going to happen next. I say that in all honesty there are only about three, maybe four authors I check with anything like regularity...

    Damn..

    It just occured to me that Lately I'd rather go out and fish or play cards than play video game or read fanfiction... am I getting old? or just jaded? :wall:

    Slash has been a part of fan fiction for a long time. Do you know about those early Star Trek fanzines from the 60's onwards that were the beginning of modern fanfiction? Slash was there baby. Hot Kirk/Spock lovin'. I bet they even had mpreg-alien-babies. Lol.

    It's a bit off topic, but yes they did. I can recall encountering JK/S slash/mpreg back in the early 1980s on the BBS's that I used to haunt. (Good old acoustic coupling modems).

    I also remember reading one of the original Mary Sues in Star Trek fanfiction. (It could even have been the original--the central character was a ~16 year old starship captain named Mary Sue).

    The end of the book series, oh, god forbid JK decides to start writing 'after war' books set with the next generation-

    Harry Potter: The Next Generation? *shudder*

    Anyways, my point was we'll definitely see a major surge in AS/S Pirates.

    So long as we don't have to endure Harry Potter: Voyager.

    I would be forced to create a real Banstick: handcrafted, made of Ash, 14", supple, good for thwarting retarded/hole-ridden canon. One of the mods can mail it to Rowling, compliments of DLP.

    If it ever gets that bad, I'll mail her a tactical nuke. And by "mail" I mean "aim at her face."

    Well, as a Star Trek show, it pretty much sucked, yeah, but it was decent as a stand-alone. Voyager just plain sucked.

    I think there will be some pullback, but it will settle in at a sustainable level like Buffy, X-file, Babylon 5, and other universes that have stopped expanding. Much of it depends on if Scholastic/Warner Brothers convinces JKR to allow tie in authors and "license" the universe to keep the money train rolling.

    Unless of course they find another money train in the meantime to ride...

    Or she could sell the franchise to a GOOD author and have the entire series redone with a less-bitchy/whiny Harry and at least relatively intelligent.

    Peter F Hamilton would make the series...intriguing. Harry as a playboy...:D

    ...Have Jbern re-write the entire series of books.

    :D

    The thing about having JKR allow other authors to write in her 'verse is that we might get books that target adults. Unlikely, I agree, but think about tight plotting, deep characterizations, mature heros, new and nifty spells, world-wide politics...

    * having a happy moment *
