So I just read the first few chapters of an H/G Twin BWL story (it looked like it had potential...*smacks self for being drawn in so easily*), and I saw something that had me staring in disbelief.

One reviewer/fangirl apparently said something to the effect of "please include a soul bond between Harry and Ginny, I would cum ecstatically if you did so" and the author's response was basically "Don't worry, I'm trying to figure out a place for the soul bond, it'll come soon."

I was shocked at how it was mentioned so casually, as if a soul bond was obligatory. I remember the "dark days" when I read everything and didn't care what the content really was, but I thought things would've gotten better by now.

I should seriously become more cynical/less optimistic; I know H/G stories will invariably suck, but I still click on ones that look like they have redeeming plot elements, only to be let down most of the time.

What was the point of spouting all this right now? There wasn't one, really, except to rant. Ah well, deal with having read this, I suppose.

The only TRUE soul bond is the one of exchanged horcruxes.
After all, nothing ties two people together like multiple murders.

Haha, so now we've gone from 'One True Pairing' to 'One True Soul Bond'?

Fan fiction doesn't get better; it only gets worse. I gave up searching for HP fics on FF.net completely.

I haven't read that many stories that had a Soul Bond, but the ones that I did read mostly sucked. In my honest opinion, romance of any kind tends to kill the flow of the story. But that's just for me.

This soul bond thing has gotten out of hand. 90% of all soul bond fics include a magical mind link, that just makes it even gheeeyer. This statistic is not proven and is subject to change whenever the fuck I feel like it.

    Ooh plot bunny...

Sadly this is the case for lots of readers still able to separate the good from the bad fics, doesn't mean that less decent fics are being written just less being found. There is so much hp fanfiction that not all the good is found and submitted into our "For Review" section.

And yea, soul bond sucks in general. Its a lame plot device.

I swear we've gone through this same thing a thousand times. Look at Potter Law and you'll see that 'soul bonding' is quite abhorred here. For some reason, it seems like new threads aren't quite so new anymore.

In general? You do know you're implying you've read at least one fic where it didn't suck. Please tell.

I think I've actually read this one. It's good enough to be readable despite the H/G soulbond thingie. Twin stories that actually bother with spelling, grammar, and a decent plot are so rare, that I read it anyway.

Now, I'm one of the rare people here that doesn't particularly mind Ginny, as long as she isn't fangirl!Ginny. I hated the lack of character development for her in the canon universe and the way JKR didn't build the romance believably. I'm not too fond of the whole soulbond thing, though. I'm not just speaking of the H/G thing, either. A heck of a lot of slash authors come up with convenient soul bonds to explain why Harry and Draco go from hating each other to being lovey dovey in five minutes. They do the same with Harry and Snape.

Harry Potter: the Other Child » reviews When everyone thinks Harry's brother is the BWL, and everyone thinks Harry is an ordinary child. What's an ignored and neglected Harry to do? Become the best wizard since Merlin and prove everyone wrong, of course. I think this one might be the story that sparked the thread. It's actually fairly well written, and not slash, which is a rarity in this type of story.

The summary alone made me gag reflexively, but I'll give it a try I suppose.....

The author actually paid attention to little things like spelling and grammar, and didn't make Harry abused, and didn't give us an overdose of angst. It's more readable than most of this type simply because of that.

Edit: Took a look to refresh my memory. The author could use a beta, but it's still better written than the average Wrong BWL story.

That's a lot of reviews for such a new fic... Although we all know the saying shit sells or whatever it was.
Anyway, if, for some reason, anyone wants to read a soul-bond fic, all they have to do is pick a random story from SIYE. Odds are it's got a soul-bond (complete with Telepalove).

Telepalove sucks. The only well written soul bond fic is Meaning of One, and thats so full of Weasley love I want to bite my fingers off. People have pointed out that it's anti-Molly but it still sucks.

    Soulbond= "fanbrat can't be arsed to develop a realistic romance/wants instant truwubtogeder4evanezz!one!"

I have NEVER read a fic where it wasn't either overkill, padding, or just plain old slackness to explain extreme OOC action.

And that goes for all stories, no matter what the fandom, including originals. It's like arranged marriages, only with destiny!ballandchain.

I hate Telepalove. It's just another damn plot device. Why would you want someone to have access to your thoughts 100% of the time?

Yeah, that's the exact story. It's not horribly written, but the way the romance takes over the story turned me off (granted, that is the genre).

The only remotely readable soul bond story I have ever read is this one, but it's still not what I would call a good story. Or at least it was readable when I read it just after I had started reading fan fiction.
