So... I play an MKV file in VLC, it works. I get audio and video perfectly. I put the subs on... and it crashes. Hard.

This wasn't happening a month ago. I've tried reinstalling. Nothing.

Help?

 

VLC is reknowned for having a rubbish subtitle implementation. I haven't heard of it routinely crashing a system though.

Does this happen with all MKV files, or just this one? What about non-mkv's with subs? Do other media players crash on the same file if you try to run them now?

If you watch a lot of material with subs, then consider using a different media player. I don't know what's available for Linux that handles MKV's. For Windows I use the latest Zoom Player beta. It handles the whole codec mess for me with ease.

All my MKV files (which all worker in the past) have the same problem. If I let it run without subs, it plays perfectly.

Mplayer simply won't play it, and Ubuntu's player will play it, but it lags like hell.

I've been trying to find something else, but VLC really is considered the all encompassing player of Linux.

 

Have you tried creating a seperate VLC installation (on a memory stick, another directory, etc) and running that?

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled (a stable version)?

I've tried every fucking media player available. They all either can't run MKVs or they run them really really terribly.

 

Did you try running a seperate installation of VLC, like from a usb drive? And tried it with an older, stabler version?

If that still fails, then your problem probably isn't with VLC itself but with some underlying component that it relies on.

I'll try running it off my flash drive. Tried an older version already.
