While most of those stories suck, it's not the sword that makes them fail. In fact, there are a few that are quite enjoyable (like A Stranger In an Unholy Land).

You know, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit.

I don't necessarily hate Harry wielding a Japanese sword as much as the random situation that most author's write to get Harry to wield it. Also if Harry does use an oriental sword I get pretty pissed if he uses a katana. Shows that the author did jack shit for research and only used it because it's so "cool" or whatever.

Katanas are usually two-handed weapons. Sure you can use it one handed but it's like seeing people using broadswords one-handed. It might not be hard to swing around, but to actually plan and fight with it one-handed? So either Harry uses a decently heavy bladed weapon with one hand like shit, or doesn't use his wand to hold the katana with both hands... Ya... Fuck you authors making Harry use a katana.

So I was very happy that Harry is using one of those fencing swords. Harry can use his wand and his sword, hurray! An author who thought of practicality!

Still, Harry's glare of death's pretty annoying. Might as well introduce the Naruto manga's killing intent or something.

Wit is the highest form of intelligence.

I admit, I tried three times to get past the first few chapters. I failed three times. The cliches really got to me, but once I looked past them for a while I found a really good fic with an excellent update rate.

And yes, the jacket is fucking cool.

    Annnnd Seratin has been turned!

Fuck Katanas. Rapier's ftw. Thus, the sword is acceptable. Being a fencer I know that using a blade isn't all about stabbing things, the experience you get from it is usable everywhere, Harry with a cat animagus is like perfect for it too.

Lucile using that sword should be self-explanatory. She's a vampire.

Whether JK explains in canon if Vampires have abnormally high levels of strength or not, I don't know. But when I think of Vampires, I think of Buffy, Blade and stuff like that. They're powerful and can pack a lot of punch.

If you have that kind of strength and can wield a huge ass blade like that so easily, wouldn't you? She practically feels the same strain in holding it that Harry feels in holding his sword. If she can swing it with the same power and speed as a smaller sword, why not do it? Especially if she can make it word. . .

Also, what's all this talk about Katanas? I don't recall even mentioning them once in the story. Anyway, isn't the one handed 'katana' style blade everyone loves and usually referrs to in their fics actually called something different? Like a tanto or something like that?

    I dunno, I don't intend to use it . . .

I think you mean wakizashi. Tanto is even shorter (dagger-length).

And we talked about katanas because it's the most common sword used in fanfiction and some think it's insta-fail.

Well actually Circular Reasoning has Katanas in it, and it's quite good.

While this was initially rough (the "Hotel California" song plus other stuff in the beginning bugged me) it's become much better, and I think it's worthy of being moved into the library based on the quality of recent chapters.

    First chapter.

Anyway since the hogwarts years are one big massive prologue, I can't wait to see what happens when it is time for Harry to leave the school. I'm also waiting to see hoow he deals with the DA and Umbrige. I suppose you can't give us a spoiler Mrjoe?

A lot of us are greatly enjoying this fic, me included. The votes are there and I've moved it to the library. Swords are lame but coming from Naruto it's not that surprising.

Welcome MrJoe. And please let's not see any chapters as fluffy as the last one.

Woah, that brought the feminist in me right to the surface. What about the man-slags that take these girls home? Why does no-one ever question their morals?

    Double standards suck.

Your feminist ideals are welcome to come to the surface. But it doesn't mean shit to us. This isn't a double standard for two reasons.

    A) We (being the collective males that don't look for whores of women to date) have a select pool to choose from. If that pool happens to have a majority we consider non-candidates for their morals then there it is. We aren't trying to date those man-slags, therefore we don't need to evaluate them.

    B) We (again that collective) aren't represented by those man-slags. Just like you (the feminist) aren't represented by those types of women.

If your feminist streak is kicking in then it should be to agree about those types of people and lament the fact that those women happen to be in the majority a great deal of the time, just the same as it is for men.

EDIT: Good to see this in the library. Although it does dip below 3.5 for me a lot, I enjoy the read.

Double standards still suck, unfortunately. However, as you can see with Harry's character (we are still talking about the fic, right? lol), he has every right to think that way when he doesn't sleep around like Cedric or Sirius either.

Swords, if you're all wondering, will never be used on other wizards. So don't expect Harry to jump into a group of baddies, start spinning with his blade held out, and cleave a whirlwind through them. He'll use the sword in situations that would genuinely benefit from using it. Mummies with weapons, ancient warrior gorgons, golems, orcs, dwarves, goblins . . . shit like that.

The fluff will only really exist between Stephanie and Archie, I don't see any of the other main characters of the story actually being all that 'fluffy' - that doesn't mean there won't be any more romance . . .

I believe every good story needs a decent amount of Action, Humour, Adventure, Drama and Romance. Though, I very much doubt fluff to the level of the last chapter will ever exist again, it'll just be trimmed over and talked about after the fact if it does, rather than as its happening.

    I don't want to subject myself to that again . . .

Writing Harry and Fleur is complicated enough :D

The sword doesn't really irk me anymore, nor does the guitar. The references are too few and far between to be noticeable. One Question though...I wasn't aware that they had the 'Macbook pro' back in 94/95. I'm being a nitpicking prick, but it would be hyocritical of me not to bring it up. I've written some nasty flames for authors who insist on giving Harry an I-pod or something like that.
