Ok, so after having gotten into Dresden Files thanks to Shezza, and after reading the first 6 DF books, I decided to try Butcher's Codex Alera series after hearing good things about it here.

So I'm reading through the first CA book, and I have a question:

Does Tavi remain furyless for the whole series?

Don't post spoilers, just a yes or no is sufficient.

I love everything about the book so far. I ploughed through the first 200 pages in a few hours, and this is the only thing that bothers me. I like the fact that Tavi is clever and resourceful, but if he remains furyless for the whole series, my interest will wane somewhat although I will still read them all.

Reading Furyless!Tavi is like reading Squib!Harry. Please tell me his 'condition' isn't permanent.

Tavi's the most epic character you're likely to read of in a month of Sundays, and you're complaining because he lacks a quality you didn't even know existed before you started reading the books. You make me sick.

    umm, ok?

You could have just replied 'yes' or 'no' without the nasty remarks.

    Calm down dude.

His condition isn't important. For now, don't think about it. Trust Tehan, he forced me to read when I had the same problem. And you actually liked book 1, that's a good sign. I liked it, but it was slightly boring to me. The other 3 books, however, were simply amazing. Even without Furies, Tavi kicks serious ass. It's comparable to a squib!Harry taking on a whole platoon of Death Eaters and winning. He is anything but weak and defenseless.

Just read the books, you won't be sorry.

The main characters of Codex Alera are to me like Lily is to Vash or James is to Tinn or Daphne is to the me-too legions. You got off lightly.

Don't complain, just read the books and trust in Jim Butcher. Even if Tavi ends up never having Furies, he's still going to kick ass.

I'll trust in your guys' judgement. It's not really that big of a deal, I was just wondering how he would compensate for his lack of furies when facing powerful people who can do all sorts of tricks with their furies.

I'm obviously not far in enough, but judging by how much I'm liking the first book so far, I'm probably going to finish it tomorrow and buy the rest and go on a reading marathon.

It's all about the journey, not the destination.

If he dies at the end, then I hope I have a great time getting there.

This hardly ruins it for me.

What are you talking about, Gaius would beat the shit out of Dumbledore. He'd just throw a fucking volcano on him.

Gaius took on an entire rebel legion more or less by himself and wiped it out, and then proceeded to do the thing with the volcano. Dumbledore is cool and all, but he never did anything nearly as badass as that.

We are not getting into one of these discussions again. They are two completely separate, and different, universes. And then for another thing, we've never seen the extent of Dumbledore's power.

But yeah, no. There's no way you can possibly compare the two series.

    Yep.

DO NOT READ WHAT IS BELOW UNLESS YOU WANT TO RUIN THE STORY FOR YOURSELF

On a side note, I finished book 3 earlier today and at the end, Tavi (and strangely Kitai) are able to use very basic crafting in putting out a lamp. It's a small start to be sure, but I hope his power grows and things are explained in Captain's Furies.

Also, if I remember correctly, Isana stunted Tavi's growth so that people wouldn't recognize him as Gaius' heir? This is what caused his condition?

Damn this series is too fucking addictive.

... use spoiler tags. There's a reason we haven't told you what happens later on in the books, it's too good to be spoiled.
