In the end, Deathly Hallows was written by a professional. Against it, A Second Chance at Life doesn't quite measure up. Saying it does is exaggerating either its quality, or DH's lack thereof. Maybe true.

But this is true for about every fanfic I've read.

For a story, ASCAL is technically better than the vast majority of shitty fanfiction out there. But as Harry Potter fanfiction, it's barely that - there's too much extraneous crap going on with the plot. I'd read it over the last two HP books, sure, but that's only if I absolutely had to make a choice.

ASCAL is not novel quality. It has grammatical errors (not many, not many at all consdiering she doesnt use a beta) and it has a slowly moving plot.

But for fanfiction it is very good. Comparing it to other fics that have 3, 4 or 5 stars around here it should easily get 4 and in my opinion 5 although I could see people giving it a 3. I cannot se how anyone could give it 2 or 1.

I wont argue that it isnt very AU. It was in the AU section of the library, if you don't like AU's fine, fuck off. But dont vote it down. If you only vote it down because it is AU I suppose I should go through and give one star to every single Romance fic and Gore fic we have.

It still comes back to the HP universe. HP magic is the building blocks that she has built her system on. She still uses HP character who are still in character (mostly). She still has Voldemort as a major plot point. It seems she has raised his impotance recently to, him being a cause for the coming invasion.

As an example we have a fic in the AU section of the library that has Harry traveling to middle earth. He changes his name, changes his magic, pretty much never mentions home again. And it has 5 stars if memory serves (I'll go get a link and edit it in latter) EDIT= Link.

So it is hardly the most AU fic out there.

If you don't like it because it has to many super characters, (dispite the fact it is a story about the most power beings on earth) fine. If you don't like it because it occasionally gives a HINT of homosexuality, fine. If you don't like it because of an legitamite reason and have read more than the first few (admittdly shit) chapters then by all means vote 2 or 3 and keep it in the trash. Everyone has their own tastes.

But if your just bandwagoning because it is AU like so many fics in our library, or has hints of slash the STFU and GTFO and form an opinion of your own.

 

I liked this fic to some extent. Sure some chapters bored the hell out of me, but others entertained me. I gave it a 3/5. The only thing I've got to say about it is that I hope Harry/Rahkesh doesn't get turned into a vampire otherwise we'll only hear about him fucking Namach and Daray.

 

I can't remember when she said t but in one of her AN's she said he wouldnt go vamp. She spent about a 1/4 of a chapter giving his reasons for staying mortal and not letting the vamps or werewolfs turn him.

 

True, very true but in the story (unless I'm mistaken) it's often said that no mortal has ever gone very far in bloodmagic, or something like that. It's those comments that scare me a bit.

 

Ah but if you wat to get technical in the story it is said that he is no longer 100% human since he drunk the Dragons blood. His conflict with the killing curse also gives him a better connection with death which is supposed to help him out.

 

I can only say one thing to that : Touché.
I hadn't taken the effects of dragon blood in account, I'm not sure if the killing curse well change anything for the bloodmagic but as I'm not sure, I won't argue.
I'll graciously admit defeat on that point, but I'll still secretly pray that she won't change her mind about turning him into a vampire.

Harry not turning into a Vampire is more or less set in stone already.

The reason why mortals never go very far is because they have to light their blood on fire and they don't have the healing factor of vampires.

Because of the dragons blood Harry can skip this step entirely.

Very good chapter and with Voldy finally taken care of we can get to the real threat.

I have have a feeling Rakeash is going to end up with another animagus form (this transformation) Namach talked about. My guess because of his connection with death and his changing blood due to the dragon's blood he will be the first human to have a death dragon animagus.

 

If so, that would be fucking badass. Amazing chapter, possibly the best one so far. The imagery in this chapter was fucking epic, it was easy to see the world that she described, to fucking smell the burning ozone, and even fucking feel the pressure of the air. This is damn near a cliff-hanger, but it's a good one. I can't wait until the next update.

I was pretty indifferent to this chapter. It's like she's down-playing Voldemort but at the same time Harry/Rahkesh defeating Voldemort was supposed to make him even more respected by the shampires, the gae, the Vageora, the cryads, and whoever else was in some other fantasy series.

I realize Voldemort's not the big baddie here, but still. He never fought back! He didn't even say a fucking word. He just got pounded and pounded and killed. At least he talked a big game at the conclave or whatever it was. Here, in Voldie's final moments he doesn't say one goddamn thing.

I suppose in the end, it may be fitting. But here at this point, it's just... unsatisfying. The fight with the shampire master I thought was more interesting. And reporters? A gun for about two seconds of screen time? For now, it's nice to see plot moving along but left here it's pretty meh.

 

The 'Final Battle' jut totally owned DH. With a spork. Although you do question why it didn't happen a couple of hundred thousand words ago if Harry was just going to destroy him like that.

I like what is happening witht he parselmagic kinda thing. It's so much better than when fanfic author #857 writes stupefy as if it makes it better because its said in paresltoungue...

I think that the next chapter is gonna make or break it for me (a bit far in i know, but still). I think that I've always wanted to know what is going to happen with Voldemort, and I don't know if that interest will continue. There's too much going on, and not enough of it as HP. I think Moody is the only character still left as a regular feature from canon (because Rahkesh isn't).

 

The introduction of muggle technology in such quantity makes me very, very wary at this point. I can excuse the Russian army using muggle weapons - despite the fact that it was the wizarding portion of the army which got screen time - because I frankly don't care what the Russians do, so long as they don't suddenly become yet another uber!powerful faction. Harry using a gun was fucking retarded, but Voldemort pointed that out himself when he torched the damn thing, so I'll excuse it as well, provided such happenings don't become commonplace.

The sudden influx of muggle tech, particularly in combination with the AN at the beginning ("Especially since I don't take notes or actually plan this shit out, it just happens") does not bode well.

Edit: Don't mistake me, I'll keep reading it regardless. I've started it, I'll finish it. At this point its just a question of how much I'll bitch about it while I read.

The reason Harry got off a little easy was because of timeing. He had just managed to destroy all the Horcuxes and do the ritual he needed to survive death. Also Voldemort was still hurting from being raped at the MLFC.

Over all this is the best chapter of the sequal. Strangely the thing that fucked me off the most was that the uber rare parseltougne gift just got 6 new members all the same age...
