Harry Potter fan fiction does not have the sazz it used to have. No more spice, no more interest anymore. Is it just me or is the alure of HP fan fiction fading away? Its because HP is getting stagnant, when there's nothing new there's no growth, and when things don't grow they decay. This is what's happening to HP and its fan fiction. The stories posted in the library these days are a thousand times worse than the stories posted only a few years before. I remember the days when Roscharch's Blot was actually funny, when IP82 actually updated from time to time, when Vorlon666's story was good stuff for light reading, when... well you get the idea.

It just seems to me like HP is dying. There's nothing we can do to save it. It's nature that things die in time. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. But I feel sad, because of how much fun I had reading fanfiction, from Barb LP's trilogy, to other 100 000+ word works (The Maw comes to mind).

Now all we have is Jbern, who despite updating regularly holds no interest for me.

HP will not completely die though. It has lost most of my interest, yeah, but I'll always come back from time to time. Perhaps to read the latest updates of my favorite authors ( serpent-sorcerer's Stranger in an Unholy Land series is awesome), or just chill when I have extra time.
Either way, HP was fun, but now the fire has been extinguished.
    What are your thoughts?

I seriously do not get why everyone loves Dresden so much. Yes, it's got an interesting world, but that's all it has.

The writing is okay but not great and the plot is heavily littered with tedium. Where Harry Potter was a story that you couldn't put down and had to read "just one more chapter", Dresden is a chore to read, a struggle to persevere through the dull and uninteresting 10% mystery, 10% action, 20% exposition and 60% whining like a bitch to the rare interesting moments. The series rests heavily on the humour of the main character - humour which if you don't find funny, much of the attraction of the story is lost.

And while we're talking about Dresden himself, the character is hard to identify with as a reader, despite the first person narration, rather dull in his opinions and actions, overly stupid in some places for the sake of keeping him in the dark, and manages to turn even some of the potentially most exciting scenes into long, emotional and angsty inner monologue and exposition that sends the reader to sleep.

    /Rant.

I currently have 12 WIP fics that I'm reading, that are updating. All are of quality, all are original, and only two have not updated in the past month or so.

It's been said before, our standards are higher, the quality of mainstream fics remain the same. Will fanfiction communities die down? Of course. The only reason HP fanfiction survived and flourished was because the series was so open ended and written so simply that anyone could take it and push it to their own ends (no matter how pathetically written). Now that there is a established ending, the quantity of fics will go down.

However I think the quality will remain updating, many of the fics are better than the actual series, (Nuhuhs and shezza's work comes to mind) and they will probably continue and (hopefully) finish their fics.

Anyway, main point summed up into one sentence:Yes it's dying, no it will continue, but hopefully without the amount of shit we see now.

...meh. I was gonna give this long response, but I don't know if you're serious or baiting. That and I don't care: you're entitled to your opinion. The spirit of what I was trying to say was that HP is dying, and something else will take it's place; in my case it's Dresden, for some it's Naruto, Pokemon, Super Mario, whatever.

...fuck this. @OP: READ THIS THREAD.

I still don't think HP is dying. As I said in the other thread, I think it's our own interest in the fandom that's dying, not the fandom itself. This opinion has been re-enforced recently by the fact that I've had a burst of re-interest in HP fanfic, and once I looked there were a great number of interesting fics that I hadn't read which I enjoyed reading.

And I was being serious re: Dresden. I love the world, and the plot isn't bad, but the story is spoiled for me by the writing, Dresden's character, and the combination of the two of them to create the dullest first person narration I've ever read. I usually love FP (such as Across the Nightingale Floor and its sequels) but I disliked this instance of it.

When I hear this from someone who's cock doesn't jump at the sound of 'Potter' I'll take it seriously.

Saying Harry Potter is written better then The Dresden Files is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

Maybe you just don't like it because it isn't geared at children.

Ah, the famous Darius debate technique. Insult the person, then people might not notice the complete lack of argument.

    In which case, I'm out.

    Thread successfully derailed, Darius :p

I heard you think Harry Potter is better then Shakespear.

The classic Taure debate technique, be so utterly retarded that it will leave your opponents dumbfounded and unable to reply.
