I think the concept of a magical stamina that would act like physical stamina is against Taure's whole magical theory. It's seems that you would need some sort of limitation though, so I would just put it down to concentration and intellectual stamina, because doing the wand movement isn't physically demanding obviously (except if it's really ridiculus) and I like not having to explain magic rationally, like some power you pull on or a muscle you flex... it's just there, and it's magic!

I wasn't talking about physical stamina per say...it was just the most convenient word that came to me...there might be a better way to explain it, I don't know, as English is not my first language.

Anyways I'll try again....think of casting magic as playing a sport.
The more you do it, the better you get at it and the longer you can keep doing it, right?
So, similarly the more you work with your magic, the better and stronger you get.

    Sort of like a 'magic-muscle'...

*shrugs* I'm pretty bad at this explaining thing...

I'm not a fan of that theory, too many people use it and canon gives it no backing whatsoever. Imo, spell Strength depends on the skill of the caster. If you cast a spell perfectly it will come out stronger than a sloppily cast one. Thats why the elder wand is so powerful, it casts every spell perfectly. It doesn't have anything to do with magical cores or muscles.

I've come up with a new theory.

Magical power is directly proportional to schlong size.

    Most definitely:rolleyes: ,

Wait, if that's true then is it possible to constantly cast 'engorgio' on your penis, in order to increase your reserves?

That's probably what Dumbledore and Grindelwald did to each other when planning to take over the world.

    What does it matter?

I usually think that people who go too far into magical theory within the story are ruining their own fic. Fine, if you're JK, to make a separate book to explain it for the die hard fans, but within the story is fail, MOST people don't care, it's just boring details.

Skim over it, make references to it, but don't have half a chapter with like 'magic comes from . . .', 'we train our magic by . . .', 'we must meditate to find our cores, and then enter our mind world to increase our magical and wandless abilities . . . good thing no one else thought of this!!!'

The stuff is boring, and oftentimes, silly.

In my stories, I prefer to focus on character interaction, plot and action scenes. I usually dig myself a hole that's very hard to get out of when I start writing filler that's sole purpose is to show character development, which is probably why the last chapter took so long to get out . . .

When the chapter is fun, and exciting (to me), I can bang out twenty thousand words in one or two days work.

If it bothers you all so, then I'll just tell you now. I don't like it when characters (especially main ones) are powerful in stories because of fate, or destiny, or just because. I tried to convey Harry as being super, but only because he pretty much sacrificed his own life and happiness for him to be that way.

Not because his godfather died, which resulted in him receiving a letter from gringotts summoning him for the reading of Sirius' will which then sets off a chain reaction of events that are always instant fail for me:
    • Harry's magic has been bound by Dumbledore or Weasleys, only to have it released by the generous goblins (who only ask for him to support them in the Wizengamot) and making him uber supers, because without the block, he's the strongest wizard in the world . . .
    • Then, after his magic is released and the goblins get over their awe of sight, they inform him that he's the heir of all the founders, merlin, morgana and chuck norris . . .
    • Harry sighs and asks why he just can't be normal
    • Some sort of time dilation device that allows him to train for a large amount of time quickly.
    • A new wand or staff is crafted for him that no one else seems to want to get done for themselves, which always has some sort of snake material in the core and causes the wand maker to cream himself after making it.
    • Using his awesome new training, and mastery of the dark arts he'd obtained over the summer, he goes to Hogwarts a true badass, sometimes having fought a score of death eaters during the hols, or the Hogwarts express, that gets him the 'disappointed' talk from Dumbledore.
    • When in school, Malfoy 'stupidly' antagonises him and gets his nose broken, or a beatdown from Harry with his awesome magic abilities.
    • Harry recreates the DA to train schoolchildren to fight a war (there is nothing I hate more in a story than this, I don't know if it's just me)
    • He still hates his fame, yet everything Harry does seems to contradict that theory and screams 'give me attention!'
    • There's a shit load of more rediculous plot devices, like Weasley love potions, Dumbledore mind control and excessive Dumbledore manipulations to name a few, but I think you get the picture.
Phew, I got my rant for the day done. It's been a stressful week in school, and only having shit like this to read during my minimal breaks is annoying me to no end. Feel free to ignore it entirely, I just wanted to get it down somewhere.

I've had three twelve hour days at school in a row, and yes, I'm aware that it was Sunday three days ago (for me, anyway). I suppose I addressed other concerns in this post somewhere . . .

    *emo rant over*

I don't think you understood me very well (if English isn't your first language, that's fine, it isn't mine either). I know you didn't mean that casting spells would cause actual physical strain, but that is the analogy you are using, ie the idea of a 'magic muscle' as you put it. That is what I was debating against (and I think Seratin and Taure agree). I would rather put it down to technique and mental concentration, so that practice is of course relevant but more like solving complex mathematical or philosophical problems (or whatever intellectual activity you find fatiguing). For me the idea is to conjecture as little as possible on the actual magic, and attribute as much as possible of the necessities of the theory to what we actually know of the spell-casting.

Mr Joe, I agree that including magical theory in a story usually shouldn't be done (except, I suppose, if it's very well distilled), but you do need to agree to one magical theory to avoid contradiction.

On another note, this may have been pointed out, but you tend to be caricatural in describing people's reactions (particularly astonishment); beginning of chapter 17, you have Tonks gasping, gaping or amazed by Harry once every 500 words. I don't know whether it's intended to be comical, but it tends to build a manga image of characters picking up their jaws off the floor (with their eyes the size of watermelons).

That brings up very weird pictures of Dumbledore teaching children....

How does it work for the fair sex then :p ?

If that was true then Hermione wouldn't read books, she would practice all day. Also, that would imply old people are almost certainly stronger than a mature wizard in his 30's. You can't say that the 'magical muscles' weak with age, first because it's stupid and second because they would say it happened to Dumbledore.

I was always of the opinion that power had nothing to do with why Hermione read books, she does it because she likes reading, and takes comfort in them . . .

I could be wrong, it has been known to happen on occasion.

She wouldn't work her ass off for the O.W.L's if that was the case. She has a need to be best and prove herself, IMO.

She proved herself long before the OWLs. From what I can see, she just studies magic because she's fascinated by it and enjoys to do so (is that so hard to believe? If I were in HP, it's what I'd be doing). Being good at it is just a by-product of that study. If she was doing it for power, then she wouldn't be reading all those history books.

OK, I concede, there is no such thing as magical stamina. But a question....considering that you need intense mental concentration to use magic, wouldn't you, over time, be able to use magic for longer periods than you could in the beginning, cause your capacity to concentrate will no doubt increase?

And I suppose canon gives enough evidence to support your theory. After all, all the better wizards or witches shown are incredibly smart, focussed and determined, from Hermione, to Dumbledore to Voldemort.

And by the way, Dumbledore's sclong??
    Aargh!
I DID NOT need those mental images.....shit....:wall:

Capacity to concentrate? What's that? I think you're rather over-simplifying the human mind.

In the Mind arts, sure. In banishing stuff, no. Your technique will probably improve, though.

It's like saying all strong people have muscles... DUH. And by 'better' I assume you mean better at magic, right?

Just to make you cry... Think Voldemort, Snape and Malfoy improving their magic together.
