    I've never met twins with the SAME names, but they often (usually, in fact) share first initial, or have a theme: Michael and Gabriel, James and Janice, Venetia and Verona.
    I never minded it much, so long as the parents don't insist on treating them as interchangeable.

    Of course a Malfoy wouldn't accept anything less ;)

    What some people see attractive others don't. Believe me I've seen people everyone was saying was drop dead gorgeous and was like "??? Whatever you're talking about I don't see it, he's average to me."

    Though he is attractive Harry kills it in the way he carries himself. Riddle has a air about him that Harry...doesn't. Harry's not ugly by any stretch of the imagination but I doubt he would have girls fainting in the street if he walked if he wasn't famous.

    Just another peeve to follow on from my last one regarding sword fights. A young Harry using an extra heavy sword to build up his muscles. Now, if we just go with the cliche of Harry using Gryffindors Sword. And then we make the assumption that Hogwarts was founded circa 11th century, meaning that Gryffindor would have most likely wielded a viking style weapon (like shown http://www.armourclass.co.uk/Data/Gfx/DarkAge3.jpg). These swords are heavy in their own right, I know several guys who are 15/16 who have trouble using my own sword (which is one of the lightest viking swords I've ever come across) for more than a couple of minutes. And they didn't grow up in a cupboard being starved on a semi-regular basis. To suggest that Harry would be able to use an extra heavy version "just so he can get used to wielding a sword sooner than he otherwise would" is idiocy. He would end up break his wrist or tearing apart his arm muscles and tendons trying to use it - theres a reason the swords aren't heavier than they actually are.

    I agree, but not for the same reasons. I'll bet a bank that Gryffindor's sword weighed half as much as it's supposed to - lightening charms, Goblin magic, and all that. Heavy or super-light, neither are conducive to building muscle.

    I've come across to:

    Viet and Nam.

    Tom and Cruise.

    Beat that.

    To whoever said attractive people tended to have attractive children: er, not quite true enough to be generalised. One of my aunts is still drop-dead gorgeous at around 50, and her husband looks good too; in their youth they were both stopping traffic with their looks only. Well, their children are... meh. Not ugly, but yeah... meh. I also know another set of children, all ranging from damn cute to frankly beautiful, and when you see their parents you wonder where the hell they got their beauty from.

    This is a regular peeve - not necessarily fanfic:
    One "tables" a topic for discussion. (putting it out so everyone can see and participate)
    One "shelves" a topic to discuss at a later time. (storing it, so to speak.)
    One "drops" a topic permanently for that group, (unless new information comes to light.)

    It irritates me all out of proportion when the phrases are reversed.

    Oh. I was just reading a fanfic, and the author had them "table the subject for later," so Harry could go help Remus with something. It just bothers me. Like I said, irritates all out of proportion. Like an itch in an unscratchable place.

    * epiphany *
    Someone should develop an "Itch in Unscratchable Place" curse - it would be a minor nuisance, but a fun thing to use in boring meetings.

    Ah, now I understand. It just annoys me when authors use words incorrectly in general.

    Hmm...

    That's curious because the idea of "tabling" something is usually British for putting it out for consideration and discussion now. In American parlance it means to postpone for later. Shelving in American parlance I consider similar but less definitive. Something tabled has to be discussed later, it can't be postponed indefinitely. Something shelved may or may not ever come back.

    But it doesn't explain why a Virginian would favor the British meaning.

    My understanding of "tabling" differed from Banner's so I'm going off this site: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/table

    @nonjon:
    Several of my high school teachers weren't from the States: two from the British Isles (I don't remember where, exactly) and one from Quebec.
    I tend to use the British spelling when there is a conflict: I spell "abhominable" with an h, colour with the u.

    I'm not surprised that I picked up a slightly British turn of phrase: Sister Eugenias was the best English Grammar teacher I ever had.

    Uh...there's no "h" in the British spelling of "Abominable".

    It's not a decision between believing me or Sister Eugenias.

    It's a choice between believing the dictionary or Sister Eugenias.

    *looks at Banner's Location* - Virginia USA

    *looks at Taure's Location* - England

    Why don't we go with the English guys choice of English spelling? That would make sense...
