If a reader needs that, cool. But it's really talented writing that helps with immersion. Jeconais has NO scientific logic in his stories' magical use, and members here eat that shit up. Same with MrJoe, and this-old-dance to an extent.

I believe Percy wore horned-rimmed glasses. Not to mention the olds that wear glasses: Dumbledore, etc.

I don't see why everyone doesn't just curse their own eyes out and get one like Mad-Eye Moody. A brief moment of pain is an adequate price to pay for Perv-vision.

Moody only had one eye replaced. And I'm pretty sure that the rules state, "No cheating. You can't remove your OWN eye - the black magic has to be inflicted by another's hand."
So, first you have to find someone who is willing to do it for you.

    (a) That shit isn't attractive, and Moody's already scarred up, and (b) there's probably a host of permits/laws regarding use of the eye.

Or he made it himself and it's one of a kind *shrug*.

EDIT: Imperius + Telling the subject to strip + memory charm = no need for Perv-Vision. Free and painless.

If you listen to fanon, there's already add-ons for your glasses to do the same thing without the whole spinny eyeball thing. Of course, Harry's too much of a gentleman (read: dickless wonder) to actually use the perve-o-vision.

Self Mutilation for Vision vs. Proper look

I would go with the proper look myself. With the eye you might get Perv-vision, but it is highly unlikely you would capitalise it, except with 12 sickle Knockturn Alley whores.

A compromise. The much used fanon spectacles with uber vision to see through everything and everything mother, grandmother and so on, only costing 10 galleons and being licensed to unspeakables but they'll make an exception for Harry because he's cute.

Um .... is there supposed to be another reason. I think 'Cute' is a damn fine reason. Oh, you probably mean an actual plot needs to be in place for Harry to get the Uber-cool-perv glasses? What if the author is just 12 years old and has never seen actual ... yanno... breasts. I think asking for a plot is asking for one thing too many, mister.

I mean to have the opportunity to see Molly in all her glory .... GAK!

Spell Creation, no more need be said... But I'll say anyways:
    -Unrealistic
-Bad Incantations (Pig Latin/Trying to actually make it sound cool because of latin via online translator that doesn't work)
-Even worse effects (Swirly ice thingy that freezes your ass o_O (Actually the Ice thing I used, I actually liked) or a random jet of light that blows up something, a great fireball etc.)
-Originality/Imagination is rarely used (Except the Ice (Fav Element ATM=Ice))
-The creation phase itself, as in "Harry just pulls a spell out of his ass"
-Light Magic, no more need be said about "Light" spells...
There are just too many other things to mention about that, so I won't...

When I use spells in a story, I just pull from D&D - there's something for every occasion, and the spells are well balanced. "Ice Storm" works great in most circumstances, and "Find Familiar" has always captured my imagination.

I have just developed another peeve, and it isn't even exactly HP- I was reading a HP/BtVS (post-Chosen) crossover, and Xander takes a punch in the eye. He gets up and walks over to talk to Snape, while the eye starts to swell and turn black.

Has it occured to anyone that to a one-eyed man, a black eye IS A MAJOR PROBLEM? Any blow to the eye or temple could cause irrepairable damage, but at this point Xander is rapidly being completely blinded as the injured eyelids swell shut. He should be frantically trying to get medical attention before he's left in the dark, possibly permanently.

Moreover, *I* would be hyper-sensitive to ANY possible threat to my surviving eye. I'd probably be highly defensive to anyone even touching my cheek or hair on that side. This moronic author expects him to shrug it off.

Hey, it's a peeve. The thread doesn't specify HP only.
At least this peeve makes sense.

A "peeve" implies a recurring annoyance. Recurring.

Lemme repeat that one mo' 'gain: RECURRING. ( I don't know the vb code for an echo, but you get the idea)

How often do you come across fics with one-eyed characters (And don't be a tool by mentioning Moody) to the point where lack of proper eye panic becomes a peeve?

Actually, several times in the last week or so. I've been on a BtVS/HP crossover kick, and Xander has always been one of my favorite characters. The only reason I mentioned it here is that it's a crossover.

    It's also a stupid mistake.

I think Golden Patronuses are the one thing that really makes me want to /wrists. Slash, Hermione-in-control-of-Harry, puppydogHarry, Harry+DD team, that's also /wrists. One thing I HATE! is when Voldemort takes in Harry and develops fatherly feelings for Harry. Fuck that shit, Voldemort, if he decides not to kill the baby Harry, plans to raise him to be his weapon to fuck Dumbledore with, and pretends to like Harry. It just ruins promising Voldemort raises Harry fics when they develop father-son feelings for each other. Cold heartless murderers, that's what they are.

However there is one thing that is just the absolute worst. Voldemort adopting Harry and then buttsecks. There's nothing worse than reading a dark, gritty fic with Voldemort and Harry ready to do some evil, but then enter slash between a 14 year old and a 70 year old decayed shell.

    Just tripped over another peeve:
Lucius Malfoy is a good guy, and has been on the Light side all along. * screams * The guy arranged for a little girl, a pureblood to be possessed!
    That Is Evil.

I've only read a VERY few stories in which Lucius gets (marginally) redeemed, and that only happened AFTER he spent some time in Azkaban. Then he was marginalized for the rest of the book.
Do Not Trust Him to face off with Voldemort, or attack DE!
