I doubt the Dementors are going to attack HJ and Fleur. I mean the Aurors/Ministry had to have ordered them not to attack the students. Besides the 'happy sucking' from afar i don't think they are allowed to do anything else.

Ya did you read the part where HJ and the rest of the champions get locked in a circle that they can't leave, and the dementors have their cages opened?

Or did you miss that part?

Since when do the Dementors give a damn about orders? They were ordered not to go near the students in POA and yet they entered the Quidditch Pitch.

They still have orders. They know they will get in trouble if they attack
    them.

    ----
The way i read that is that they were starved for months and they saw/felt a feast.
This has Dementors right from Azkaban and they are surrounded by students. So its not like they are so hungrey that they would risk punishment.

There is a bit of a difference between turning up at a quidditch match to suck a bit of hapiness out of a lot of people, and kissing wizards inside Hogwarts when they are specifically ordered not to. This isn't like the whole Sirius Black episode, where they were given the order to kiss Sirius, and where Harry was an accomplice, breaking rules by being outside, after curfew, and with no witnesses. I'm guessing Jbern will make them a bit extra agressive and less controlable than in canon, and use the fact that they remember Harry to target him. You do have to remember though that they are controlable enough for the Minister to use as direct protection. They're not the wizard equivalent of a rampaging lunatic.

@Boo: LOL get in trouble? WTF is the Ministry gonna do, give the Dementors a spanking? Time-out? Kill them? Dementors do what they want, when they want to.

That being said, I doubt there are any souls at Hogwarts tortured enough to really tempt a Dementor. HJ obviously, maybe most of the staff, but the kids are probably safe.

No Dementors don't do what they want when they want, becuase if they did they wouldnt wait until Voldemort shows up to go on a 'Happy Suck' rampage. They would just go were they could get the most food and start kissing people right and left.

Punishment could be stationed in the least populated area of Azkaban or guarding an abandoned warehouse or something. Or maybe being locked in a room with a Patronus for a few hours.

So, there are the same dementors that attempted to steal the soul of a 13 year old Harry at the end of PoA, right?

Stating the obvious here, the dementors were not ordered to kiss Harry. I'm impressed someone has tried to argue such a bad point for so long.

No one was allowed out after curfew. The Dementors had the order to kiss Black and someone was getting their way and helping Black escape. Someone that shouldnt have been out there in the first place. They were following orders, get Black at any cost.
There may have been no direct order to kiss Harry in 3rd year, but they were still following orders.

When they attacked him in surrey...the train...after the womping willow....and when they kissed Crouch Jr
All following orders. The only time they didnt follow orders was the quidditch match and abandoning Azkaban. But even when the abandoned Azkaban they were still following orders just not the Ministry, they had a new boss.

So they do what they are told. It really just depends on who is giving the orders.

And all i said was i'm sure the Ministry ordered them not to attack the students.

My theory is that it isn't Hagrid - does polyjuice work on half-giants? - or (less likely) Hagrid has been imperiused'ed. Since the Imperious is an unforgivable, it's likely too much risk for whoever arranged this one.

Hagrid was sent to Azkaban back when Myrtle was murdered, right? He probably hates them with a purple passion.

Maybe Hagrid is tired of the way he and all of his race are treated? That's where I see this going anyways. As for how they make it out, my guess has something to do with the Headmaster and co. throwing a few dozen Patronuses. Or HJP has one of those flashes of insight and fucks them up in a whole new way.

I'm with Boo on the Dementor point, if they were uncontrolable, they would be kept under much tighter surveillance. But that's only as far as canon goes. If Jbern wants to change them so that they aren't blind, and can tell it's Harry, and that they're the same ones that Harry face at the end of PoA, and that they're uncontrolable enough to just go on a rampage, regardless of orders, then he will, and the plot will be the more interesting for it. He already felt the need to put them in cages, so you never know.

As for Hagrid acting like that, why did he have those ward objects with him in the first place? It seems very unlikely that he would plan to murder Harry (or desoulify him, if you prefer), even if he wants to figh for Giant rights.

If they're ordered not to harm anybody... then whats the fucking point of putting them in cages?

"We best put these here dementors in cages, otherwise the students might harm them by accident."

We're talking about Dark creatures here folks, there are no redeeming qualities to a creature that feeds on happy memories and sucks out human souls. They're bad guys, plain and simple. Sure, the ministry might have some semblance of control over them, but if the ministry could control them completely they would never join Voldemort. If they were content feeding off of prisoner's memories in Azkaban they would never accept the chance to go out and feed on innocents.

    - Remus Lupin, PoA 10.

    Bad guys do bad things.

Don't mix canon and fanon too much. If Jbern puts them in cages, it's a good indication that he's going to diverge from canon to an extent, but I doubt dementors would attack students when specifically asked not to in canon. The question is not 'do they want to?', it's 'are they sentient enough to know that attacking students in that instance goes against their interests?'. Which in canon, it would seem they are.

Your arguments make no sense. In joining Voldemort, they went with a more natural ally giving them a better deal. If they were totally uncontrolled, they would have been randomly sucking happiness from people, instead of garding prisons. And if they were unhappy, they would have revolted, which is what they did to an extent in going to the quidditch match.

The problem with such reasoning, sir, is that you are under the impression that the Ministry is competent.

But enough of that. I'd like to bring your attention to something else. In the beginning of this stroy, overexposure to the dementors is what unlocked James' memories from Harry's brain. So if he's overexposed to them again, is there any chance other stuff might happen?

I'm sorry, but I don't exactly remember this 'better deal' that Voldemort gave them. As far as I can remember, we never see him ordering them around or anything. All we know is that they abandoned the prison and started attacking at will. Who's to say that they didn't do that because they wanted to? They saw Voldemort was keeping the Ministry busy, so they jumped ship.

I could be wrong, but I don't ever remember Voldemort ordering the Dementors to do anything. It's been a while since I read the book, though.

I don't get how you can say that the Dementors attacking a quidditch match is them revolting to an extent. They fucking attacked a stadium full of children. They may or may not have tried to kiss someone, we'll never know since Dumbledore drove them off almost immediately.

It's been a long time since I read that books, but wasn't Sirius at that game? If he was, that would explain why they were there.
