That's a really good point, I completely forgot about that. God I hope it doesn't bring Lily's memories out... Could the dementors completely shake loose the entirety of Jame's conscious, to the point where HJ simply becomes J.

That would make some sense. I think in PoA, at least the way I remember it, they give the explanation that there were a lot of happy emotions at the match and they hadn't been getting anything to feed on while guarding Hogwarts. It's like sitting a hungry man in front of a cake, and telling him he can't eat it; eating it is going against authority. Of course if Sirius was there it can change everything.

@Samuel: Just so you know, revolt has a lot to do with doing exactly what you want, instead of what people tell you to, which is what eating kiddies would have been.

I don't remember very well either, but at the end of GoF Dumbledore warns Fudge that the dementors will join Voldemort, something to do with a better deal, then in HBP they leave Azkaban, I don't know where, and I think in DH at least some of them are under MoM (ie, Voldemort) control.

@General Custer: I'm assuming you're competent at reading my post. Nowhere do I imply that the ministry is any such thing.

If HJ did become just J, I think alot of the enjoyment in the story would disappear, at least for me.

Have you read this story at all?

    Eh?

The only problem I can see with that is that Hat has said he is pretty sure he's brought out all of HJ's repressed memories. He saw that ball of hidden memories in the beginning of the story. If this were to happen again, he would have seen another group of hidden memories. Of course he could be hiding things from Harry, but that would seem too much like a deus ex machina.

Then again, you didn't specify memories, so maybe it will unlock some sort of power, but I still find that unlikely.

I seem to recall that the potions and Hat had gotten out most of the memories, but not all. That's why I'm saying that it could encourage total recall.

Except the Dementor's did not go for all the students. They went after Harry:

Fudge never ordered the dementor to kiss Crouch Jr:

And later Dumbledore on the dementors:
The dementors abandon Azkaban early in the summer before Harry's sixth year. During his visit with the Muggle PM Fudge comments on the mist being related to dementor breeding and this meeting was only a few weeks into the summer break.

Face the facts. Dementors are not controllable in any way. They only occupy Azkaban because they have to. Its easier to feed there and they don't have to worry about being hunted by the Ministry. With Voldemort back they don't have to worry about that, they can feed and breed to their content while the Ministry is busy with the Death Eaters. Really, I'm surprised anyone is actually arguing that anyone can really control them.

    Just wondering:
How did the Dementors leave? Azkaban is an island, and the North Sea is notoriously hazardous. Even if they fly, and are also immune to stiff winds and downdrafts (a demon skill?) etc., surely there is SOME sort of barrier. After all, the Ministry is responsible for them, right?

You mean some kind of ward?

Hm, I don´t know if Dementors are repelled by normal ward, need special wards or both possibilities are right.

But I doubt that there was much to hold the Dementors, I mean, they were/are the wardens there! What if some prisoner jumped of the island and try to flee (or something else *shrug* use your imagination) and they couldn´t chase him because they are/were bound to the island?
It is just the easier choice for them, a nice, dark and damp prison with lots of food and no one who hunts you and all for free!

I really wonder what kind of effect such an assault will have on HJ...
He can´t become a "full" James, he may unlock all of James´s memories, but he will still have Harry´s.

You're talking about the dementors attacking the Quidditch game in POA. I get that, but nowhere in any book in canon, does it say that Sirius was there. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly it was always explained as the fact that there were so many concentrated emotions coming from the stadium that they couldn't restrain themselves. For a more in depth explanation, scroll up.

Now, I want to know what that has to do with dementors in cages for the tournament.

Since it didn't happen, nothing I guess. Sorry, I seem to have read to many fanfics.

Could've sworn I remember Harry sighting what he thought was the Grim at that point near the forest edge.

Backwards foreshadowing of Sirius being there?

Anyone got the book on hand?

Sirius actually tells Harry that he came to watch the quidditch after they've met in the Shrieking Shack in PoA. I can't come up with the page number right now, but I was re-reading it last night, so yeah. We DO know that Sirius came to at least one quidditch match. We just can't prove he was present when the Dementors attacked Harry. Of course, we can infer that he was, since he knew Harry's broom had been broken--and bought him a knew one after his escape.

Firstly, the fact that they went for Harry isn't particularly relevant; if it's not just there for dramatic effect, it can only show that they are more sentient than we think.

We don't know whether or not Fudge orders them to kiss Crouch, it isn't stated. Either the dementor did it because Fudge asked it to, or because it somehow knew that he was a "bad guy" and that it wouldn't bother Fudge if he was kissed. In any case, as far as we know it didn't go against the ministry's wishes.

What Dumbledore says of the dementors comes on my side of the argument: they are mentioned like followers who will be swayed by an offer by Voldemort, and who therefore know what is in their best interest.

Hence, they are controllable to an extent. They stay in Azkaban because it allows them to feed without upsetting the MoM. With Voldemort back they could join a side that would offer them more. I never said they were house elves, I just said that when next to a random student, specially in front of ministry officials, they would not attempt to kiss him or her. Being locked up with a dementor isn't like being locked up with a hungry lion. No one can deny that the ministry has some power over them, and can excercice a certain amount of influence - that is, a certain amount of control.

@Koriskova: Lokesin is mainly right. This the dementor match:

Well, I think I've figured out what's going to happen. I don't think it'll be Pronghorn time (though Fleur with Feathers is still possible).

We know that the sorting hat is inside the barrier. After all, their seats are and the sorting hat is on Harry's Seat. Harry just gets the Sword out of it, and we see how Dementors do while being stabbed.
