Thanks! Now I get to see what the fuss is about! ....and err... share the fic with anyone else who wants a copy, yeah! That's the important thing!

Its a bit of a mess over there.

For one thing the group looks more or less as if it was created more or less only for the purpose of storing a lemon (x-rated) chapter and then there's the fact whitewitchdark is apparently away from home and even then he or she has no idea how to upload to yahoo anyway. That doesn't even begin to deal with the fact that the group is more or less dead anyway.

    Hmmm...

I'll go and upload what I have to rapidshare.de and also see if I can upload the file to the group... one way or another.. [shrugs] At least people will be able to read up to the last chapter I have in the archive and use that to continue reading if they were on chapter three or ten or something when the fic got torn down!

Thank you, thank you. I owe you one. :D
No, really. Call in a favor anytime. Anyone who archives things that often...

Well I only save everything I read... (I read lots tho'! ) I used to have a nice little archive saved on an iomgea zip disk (100mbs) and using MS-doublespace to allow me to store almost 300MBs worth of stories (mostly anime) until the disk dies on me. :( These days I'm doing much better what with cd-burners and DVD-burners. I still miss that old archive today though because there are some fics from that era I've never been able to find again (even though I can vaguely recall fragments of their stories) and the webpages they were originally stored at have disappeared.

I currently have... 298MBs of various fanfics in rar format, which doesn't count my 'original' fiction archive (mostly eBooks and a few web fictions that exist) or my unsorted folder -- fics I'm still reading and or have not yet had time to rar, or the RAAC archive I make yearly to keep up with the anime fiction world. My unsorted folder weighs in at 640MBs --but remember, that's uncompressed! Also there's my 'mini-archive' folder with the complete works of certain writers and offline archives of selected sites which weighs in at: 531MBs --all compressed.

 I've never actually sat down to think about this before... I am a bit of a packrat aren't I? Well my Harry Potter folder is only 99MBs (compressed) with 275 fics stored in it. The rest is anime stuff but I'm catching up. It's all Anya's fault of course.. up until some one recommended her 'Naked Quidditch' to me I'd managed to stay out of the Harry Potter fandom, but that fic was so funny and accessible that I was completely sucked in!
    :abduct:

--bornagainpenguin (who reminds people that websites are not eternal, and a fickle auther can always delete his or her works with a click of a button-- so back up the fics you love, you'll be glad you did!)

PS: here's a link to the fic--

Wow, I don't know how you menage to compress it that much. For me, it's 2,5 gb in 800-900 HP stories (uncompressed)...

    ROTFLMAO! Gives ip82 an example:

I recently compressed an archive containing all the known chapters (minus HP+stargate) and the runnerups to the DLP.net FFAs... altogether that's 23.6 MB but when compressed in RAR format it shrinks down to a mere 4.16 MB... its just in the nature of html to compress small. Heck if I decided to drop the 10% recovery record I always use the archive would be even smaller! Hmmm... 3.78MB without a recovery record.

I always opt for the recovery record-- its saved my sanity waaay too many times-- when an archive got corrupted-- to not use it!

--bornagainpenguin (who imagines you'd save a huge amount od hard drive space by archiving files even in lowly gzip format..)

I am always against real time compression - too slow and buggy for me.

Zipping files could help but then I wouldn't be able to browse through stories that easily...

Nah, 2-3 gb isn't much these days. It's just strange howe much space these stories take...

You need to use WinRAR, which can be used to open the archive and is the tool I use when making them:
[ http://www.rarlabs.com/download.htm ] This is a nagware version of the program though. After 30 days it'll nag you but still function completely.

You could also use iARC which is a freeware multiple compression utility which can be found here:
[ http://www.izarc.org/ ] It works just as well but I became addicted to the right click context menus of WinRAR and so rarely (pun honestly not intended) use it.

Use 7-zip. Its free. Get it from sourceforge or just google it.

It compresses and uncompresses rar files easily as well as many other types.

    GET IT. GET IT NOW.
