Raising money for charity isn't exactly money whoring, most authors wouldn't write a page of A4 for charity, thats one of the redeeming features of JKR.

Of course, but would not simply donating half or even a quarter of the profits she reaped from the HP series be a better way?

If she really cares that much for charity, she'll do the above. Heck, she could even have pledged to just donate half the proceeds from DH to charity. This "Beedle" shit could bomb and she would hardly give a damn as she's not earning any money from it.

Who really gives a fuck, she could do this or that and she's writing another book for charity, you don't have to buy it, I certainly wouldn't waste money on it but people can't really say it's money-whoring.

She said she wanted to write children's books after HP so this could be it.

Nah, J.k wouldn't write a "REAL" book for free. Her "REAL" book is most likely ideas she rejected for HP, so a childish Harry potter perhaps? Oh wait most of HP was childish, hmm so what the hell is she writing?

It isn't money-whoring, but it's clearly and plainly attention-whoring. my post was simply to point out that JKR actually doesn't really give a fuck about charity.

How 'bout you guys write a book for charity and see how much you raise, hmm? Quite frankly, I'm getting sick of all the JKR bashing. She's raised over $50 million with Quidditch through the ages and Fantastic Beasts alone, and then there are the dozens of other charities she's founded and raised publicity and money for. I don't give a shit whether or not it is attention-whoring, as it's actually doing a hell of a lot more good in the world than any of you guys. So STFU.

EDIT: And just because only a handful of people here are gonna buy it, doesn't mean it won't sell well. Hell, you know every single mugglenetter's gonna buy it.

So no one's allowed to judge a book's merit because it serves another purpose? That's like me saying,"NO, you can't say the Toyota Prius is ugly because it saves a lot of gas!"

I'll be the first to say that writing the Tales (and QttA and FB) were the absolute best thing she could've done to help bring attention to charity, regardless of her sincerity. She wrote books and made a billion dollars for herself, so it stands to reason that she can write books (while still popular) and make a significant amount of money for charity as well. That in no way means that her books aren't shit.

Objectively, I understand that the majority of people around here rag on Rowling because they can't get their heads around the fact that these books were written for children - children who don't give a shit about how magic actually works in their world, or in-depth characterization that wouldn't work 'in the real world', or whatever perceived mistakes we point out to make us feel like we know better than the author. I get that. It largely doesn't matter to her, because (whether she was cognizant of the many disconnects in her 'verse or not) her target audience eats her shit up, without question. I'm not complaining that she doesn't make good literature for her audience, I'm saying that she doesn't make good literature in general. She had a great hook (the first three books), but after that she either lost her steam or didn't care.

I don't give a shit about how much money she's going to pull for her various charities, because that's a given: at this point and time in her career, she can damn near mint money (which is rare for any author). I can also guarantee that the Tales will be a disappointment, when judged objectively.

Well said both Oz and Blaise, most other authors don't give a fuck, even if JKR doesn't care, she has her own charity registered with someone so she must at least give a flying fuck.

Taking a look at Amazon, the £50 special edition is #1 and the £3.50 edition is #2 in sales right now.

    So yeah.

I ordered a standard edition one. It's only £3.50, after all, and the Dumbledore footnotes sound interesting.

And then Hermione writes "Why don't you get a new one?", even though she knows that Ron's family has money problems. What a bitch. Besides, the real question is "Why don't you use reparo, you fucking dumbass."

Personally, doubt it will be on much importance to the average DLP reader. A sparse few comments that may interest, but I'm of the mind that the book is likely catering to a younger crowd. I enjoyed the world the HP books created, and the chances for fanfiction, but these smaller side books were purely fan media. Still the charity angle is a good one. Hope it does well, but don't think I'll buy a copy.

Mindless, the Heir, Kolskit, Dr. Strange and Immolo as well. Looks like Syao got angry ... a left-over from yesterday's HallofShame'd Intro-Thread?

Anyway, I'm with Taure, I believe. It's 7,50 € here. I'll probably get it ... but anyway, isn't the release date sometime in December? You can bet your arse that it will sell like crazy, then.

I'm gonna join the anti-bandwagon bandwagon and say this is rather arseholish. Dislike of JKR aside, it is for charity, and it's only $7.59. How cheap can you get?
