    To,
    All Authors writing Fanfiction

Sub : Ignore quantity of reviews / Hit list

    Really,
Most reviews are pointless. Few may point out things that can help you improve your lot in writing but most amount to
" great chappy .. cnat wit fr more " .......> do you really care for suck reviews.
Hit count for slow updater with short chapters will always be more that people with long chapters who update regularly, mainly because readers forget what happened previously and go for quick recaps.

Favorites can be a good measure but most readers dont have accounts in the respective websites. Some of us are members of your yahoo groups as well and our hit counts dont register on the ff.net site in the first place.

If some of you are good in Math, you could very like make an equation for weighted averages for each of these factors ( for example 100 hits = 10 review = 1 fav author ) , if youre an expert with more time in you hand add factors like frequency of updates, chapter length, even reviews of lenght greater than 1 line and create a better scale to see where you fit in as an author.

    toodles

I tell myself that one-shots don't get many reviews - especially drabbbles.

Average of just over 400 hits per review; 2 c2s per review.

Reading nonjon's stats, I think I am having an adequacy crisis.

    [Edit: Prettified using nonjon's suggestion].

Post your Harry/Fleur story, one chapter every week on FFnet while you put the whole thing on DLP's Work by Author. I gaurantee that your stats will rise.

I like how everyone completely disregarded the "toodles" guy. :)

I'm not sure everyone ignored sangmtr, as much as it was simply he was echoing the primary point of the discussions in this thread. Specifically that there's more to it than just a number. Some chapters may have huge review totals. But when you realize the author took a six month hiatus between that one and the next chapter, it makes more sense. Or perhaps some fic stirs up a fair amount of reviews (let's use the completely hypothetical example of being named and based off a just-released highly-hyped video game). That one has a premise that's intriguing enough to attract attention and leave a comment, but if there are fewer favorites or alerts, it might not be as good as some of the author's other stuff with less reviews but more favorites and alerts.

The thing about reviews is that they are not always a good sign. Some are useless, some are negative, some are simply because you've done something that pissed readers off. Some only leave a review when they see a typo or grammatical error to correct.

If you give a reader nothing to complain about, sometimes you leave them nothing to say.
    I just use the "
    Code:
" tag to put it in that little window which uses a fixed width font. And in that window tab stops can be pasted until everything lines up. (Hitting the tab key will usually jump out of the window, but you can highlight a tab-stop, copy and paste it over and over.) You can 'quote' my response and see the forum tags behind it too.

And while the numbers are easy to compare, I doubt anyone with at least a couple of reviews on a fic can compete with my Apathy of Freedom stats: [B]184 reviews / 268631 hits / 400 favorites[/B]. That's one review for every 1,460 hits. And more than two favorites for every review. Heck it's in 57 more C2 groups than it has reviews. That is [I]awful[/I]. And I challenge anyone to top it. (No reviews or less than like five don't count.)

I just wonder with over 3 million hits (closer to 4 if you add in my author page) how much ad revenue I may have stirred up for them. I'm nearly certain it's negligible as no one pays any attention to the ads on ff.net but I am curious.

OMG you're onto something! I'll rename all my other stuff "Halo 3", "Call of Duty 4", and "Bioshock"! It must work! It must!

Jbern once said that the key to getting reviews is ending with a good line. Perhaps Apathy of Freedom didn't ration out the good one-liners efficiently? If you dole them all out at the beginning, then the endings might be lackluster.

Nah. There are all sorts of reason for Apathy's weak number. The biggest reason is probably because I posted the whole thing, all 15 chapters, at once. So of the 184 reviews it has, 27 are on the first chapter (many reviewing the whole fic), and 117 are on the last chapter (again reviewing the whole fic). No other chapter has more than 7 and one even has 0.

Not to mention a couple of months later I wrote a one-shot sequel/longer epilogue. So the average review-leaving reader may give it 15 hits for all the chapters, and then leave a review on the one-shot sequel.

Like I said, hidden reasons behind the numbers.

And that jbern sounds like a smart fellow. I bet he heard that from someone truly brilliant.

(Although what I told jbern wasn't that it's about ending with a good line as much as it is the ending of the chapter. The last few paragraphs. You can have a brilliant chapter and if the last few paragraphs are bland, it can turn someone off from reviewing who may have been about to review. Or it can be a bland/filler chapter but if you give them a surprise, a one-liner, or something that makes them yearn for the next chapter, then they are leaving with a smile or a jolt of emotion. Made up statistics are 77% wrong, but I still say 83% of readers either review or not based on the last few paragraphs.)

I'll join the fun and put my stats for Sixth Year, which are, to me at least, surprisingly high.

136669 words (on PatronusCharm there's more words for some reason)
    11 chapters
    177 reviews
    39480 hits
    84 c2cs
    188 favs
    321 alerts

Been on ff.net since November 30th. So that's nearing three months.

I must admit, when I started posting the story, I was hoping to have 100 reviews after chapter fifteen. When I posted chapter seven, I only had 30, and now I have 177 after 11! Scary.

I just stumbled on this thread today and though it looked rather fun. Here goes my stats for Knowledge is Power:

    Knowledge is Power:
    Words: 284774
    Chapters: 27
    Reviews: 2897 (90% of which are useless . . .)
Hits: 487888 (this stat chapter by chapter is more interesting imo)
    C2s: 349
    Faves: 1419
    Alerts: 1563

    User stats:
You are on the favorites list of 781 members.
You are on the author alert list of 732 members.
You have submitted a total of 38 signed reviews.
Total words archived : 318,369 words.
Avg. number of words per entry : 159,185.
Numbers of hits to your profile page : 318132.

Those stats a rather skewed somewhat in my opinion, considering I was running both a Naruto and HP fic at the same time, taking advantage of two large groups of people, I guess . . .

Also, words achieved would be around half a million if I didn't delete my Naruto story from my profile, but this is a HP community, no?

It's only been three months since I shamed you all, but I did finish a fic since then. And you can all argue which of the two completed ones with over 900,000 hits will hit a million first. Or if MrJoe's ongoing KIP may reach a million before either of mine do.

Nobody wants to follow nonjon--no matter what numbers you have, you're bound to look pretty weak. :)

I vote for A Black Comedy to break a mil. Lots of us need to catch up on that one, whereas most have already read Browncoat, Green Eyes. Also, that Firefly's not airing anymore (at least where I live) doesn't help.

By the way, KIP was published in November 07, and my first story (Naruto one) not long before that.

I'm not implying anything with that little bit of information . . . really.

    It's pathetic, but whatever.
I expect it'll go up after I post the next chapter. Almost nobody searches for stories under 10k.

I'll bite and put mine up. I haven't updated in awhile, my life has been rather busy of late, and I've four assessments due in the next fortnight, so it ain't getting any less stressful. Hopefully after the next fortnight I can sit down and finish the next one, at least, before the next wave of work comes.
