I have just decided to add Linux Mint to a spare HDD and try to teach myself to use it. However, after a successful install, I'm struggling to connect to my wireless network. I started with roaming and it detected my network, but kept asking for my passphrase over and over. I must have put it in about 50 times.

I then tried manually setting up a network, and it appeared I got a connection, but the internet wouldnt work.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Bad installation on the internet drivers possibly. I had another computer do something similar to this, except it would try to connect without asking for the password. Might have to reinstall them.

I know nothing about linux, its all a learning process for me, but those pastings don't look right in anyway.

Trying also to install ATI graphics drivers. Got them downloaded through Vista and copied across to my Linux desktop. They wont install though, says it has to be done by a super-user. Though I'm the only one.

Interesting. Your interface is recognised, but you are not getting an IP address. Does your service provider show up when you log in as root and type

    iwlist scan

Secondly, from what you describe, your symptoms suggest that you are unable to log in to your network. Does your version of wireless tools support the encryption used by your service provider? What encryption does it use?

As for the ATI, you should log in as root before trying to install those drivers. You did create a root account, I believe, while installing.

As I'm on now, I'll add some info before I try your questions.

When I first installed it picked up my wireless network. BTBusinessHub-985 and prompted for passphrase, which looks like this, but isn't 85225682330, which I belive is a Hex WEP code.

Now however, it won't pick up a signal at all, I have tried manual configuration, which I'm sure would work, but I might be missing some settings. I switched back to wireless roaming and it won't pick up the network at all now. Having said that, the signal in my room is pretty rubbish and it's been an allmightly struggle for Vista to pick it up. I have my usb adapter placed in the only possible position to get a connection, so that might be the problem. I am getting some wireless homeplugs next month which might help.

Right I'll go and try to fidn answers for your questions.

    Cheers

If it's asking for you to log in as super-user, use sudo <command> (for command line programs) or gksu <command> (for graphical programs; using Alt+F2 or command line to run them). (I'm assuming you're running GNOME here.) The password would be the same one you use to log in with.

To give us a better idea of what kind of Wireless controller you have, run:

    lspci | grep Network

    and post the output.

Right, I messed up something with my ATI drivers so I re-installed Linux and boom, internet worked first time. Hopefully now I can get the ATI drivers right.

edit: Just found this guide for ati installation. It varies from all the others I've looked at, but comments suggest it works. http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=1413

    Does it look right?

ATI? That's KDE, fool! I'll assume it's KDE you want. Just type "sudo apt-get install <KDE version you want>" without the quotes. Dunno about linux mint, but in Ubuntu you need to logout, click "options --> sessions --> KDE --> change session" or something similar. As linux mint is based on Ubuntu I'd assume it's somewhat similar.

EDIT: Or you could search synaptic/aptitude for KDE. Whatever floats your boat. ¯\(°_o)/¯

Odd, but I've had the same thing happen. Anyway, if you want us to help fix your ATI problems, we'll need some info:

    Kernel version
    Linux Mint version
Type of graphics card (if all else fails, run: lspci | grep VGA )

The only problem with playing around with the VGA card/drivers/config is that if you fuck something up, you're stuck with command line. If you don't know your way around command line (or don't have another computer to use to search for a fix), you're up fuck creek without a hot chick.
