This probably isnt the right forum for this argument, and i do agree with keeping science out of magic, but i have to disagree with Methene on the 3 curses Especially the killing curse. I find the AK curse an unbelievably unimaginative way to kill someone, i mean come on they just fall over dead. If i was evil and i wanted to kill someone with magic i'd look for a spell thats similar to (please excuse anime reference) fist of the north star internal exploding or melting. Ok i understand that the book series was aimed at kids originally but Voldemort bored me as a Villain, whom, from what i got from the books was supposed to be more then a little unhinged.

sorry i didnt mean to hit post before...
    my bad

Your post was cut out there.

The point of Methane's post was that there isn't a spell better then each at it's chosen field. While it may be more creative to you to find another way to kill someone, that isn't what you are looking for then. Methane would use the killing curse to kill someone. Period, that's all he wants. You want something to kill someone graphically and painfully. You want two different things.

    P.S. It's called edit.

Harry lived past the Killing Curse and it seems that resistance can be had against the Imperio. Hardly the best in their fields you take Canon at its word.

Eh, you do know that the killing curse is 99.99% (stupid prophecies) full-proof as it involves ripping the soul out right? That kind of stuff doesn't heal after several weeks of bed-rest. Sure, there are spells designed to do damage but the killing curse is designed to kill, no other way around it.

As well, the Imperio curse can be resisted but how many people are there in potter-verse that actively resist it other then a select few? Not to mention there are compulsion spells and the lot but they're all weak compared to brute force of will imposed on the subject and unreliable as well sometimes.

Compulsion spells don't sound much like canon to me, barring love potions (and possibly spells, which we only hear about in CoS).

Also, the killing curse "ripping your soul out" is also speculation - truthfully, I doubt it works that way at all, since if it were inexpertly cast by students (as mentioned by fake Moody in TWT), it would give nosebleeds and little else.

I think he is trying to say that there are enough confusing stuff out there without having to insert: techno-gun-nucleur-terminator-gundam wing blaster canon wand, into the occasion.

HP is a fantasy story, might as well stick to the magical portions if you want to make a serious story, but if your taste is a comedy feel free to add a rifle or tank into the equation.

I have yet to see a fic where HP crashes into the ministry of magic in an tank. That would probably scare the crap out of a lot of people, if not confuse them.

I'll give you the Killing Curse but if Canon! Harry resisted against an Imperio from an Inner Circle Death Eater and Voldemort, then I can't see how hard it is to resist it.

Not a tank, mind you, but DobbyElfLord's very nice story, Sniper, comes pretty close. Jeconais's White Knight, Grey Queen has Apache Attack helicopters taking out Voldemort's giants with Hellfire missiles.

You know I was thinking that when I wrote this, that scene when James Evans breaks in to steal Tom armed with a Riffle and his grand kids will forever be in my memories, I am glad I am not the only one with good taste.

Actually, there are better spells to kill people than the Killing Curse - It only kills one person at time. Even Pettigrew was capable of casting a spell that killed eleven Muggles, and so wizards like Voldemort and Dumbledore should be able to cause massive destruction with a few flicks of their wand.

I don't think you're getting it. The Killing Curse is the best curse to kill someone with as the only factor is wether it hit.

Now, if you use anything else, too many factors come into play to make it sure that you killed someone with it. The person could have dodged, worn protective clothing, spell wasn't strong enough etc.

You can dodge green rays of death, but you can't dodge an explosion. Getting your skin immolated by magical flames, bones grinded to dust by the pressule blast, and flesh ripped apart by speeding shrapnel kills you just as dead as getting hit by the dreaded Killing Curse. And mind you, it does it in a lot more spectacular manner.

What you don't seem to get is that the Killing Curse can not be blocked by magic. An exploding curse or some such can. That is why it is feared and banned more than any other curse. Because there is no counter and no shield to it.

I'm aware of that, but as an average wizard apparently isn't even able to cast a proper Shield Charm, it matters not.

I don't think killing mediocre wizards is hard anyways. It doesn't seem very useful either.

Also, you're speculating quite a bit on magical explosions and 'pressule' blasts.

That's retarded. Let's say it isn't hard to resist. Why, then, did Barty Crouch succumb to it for better part of a school year? He was a leading wizard in the DMLE in the past, so he arguably should be a skilled wizard. You can't say he was unfamiliar with the curse and what it takes to operate it, since he cast it and held it on his son for how long? Years. And yet, when he had it cast on him, he fell to it for most of the Triwizard Tournament.

You can't really compare Harry's force of will to anybody else's. You're confusing his magical ability with willpower, which are two entirely separate things. Harry did manage to overcome Voldemort after their wands linked, after all. Clearly, he has a lot of willpower.

There's also the fact that despite all the danger he's in he never does anything productive. It takes a lot of willpower to ignore the constant danger your life is in and to act like that dumb.

I will admit that he's not very motivated. Almost never, actually. But, when he does get motivated, he's been shown to do some pretty impressive magic. Patronus charm, for example.

These things have a chance of being fixed, being healed. Instant death doesn't and I think that scares them.
