Taure's right...the only PCI graphics cards you'll find are the old, old ones- 16 or 32mb cards. The onboard graphics on your motherboard will slaughter the hell out of them, which is saying something.

Skykes: It depends on where you live, so I'll go around Australia Prices and presume you're American. (Which means about 60-70$ AUS). At that price, you'll only be able to get a nVidia *400 series- probably the 9400GT. I dunno about the quality of ATI (is the HD3650 better?). Depending on your monitor size, it might be an option for you.

You're better off putting in an extra 20 or 30$ and getting a *500 series- the 8500GT or the 9500GT. I have a friend who has the 8500GT who plays all the latest games- granted, not on the best settings but they still run. They're still pretty cheap these days, though the economic thingy is driving up the costs of pc components.

I'm probably going to up the budge a bit and buy it in a few weeks. Sucks that I cant put in my old card, a GeForce6600 which is old but still runs smoothly and has a quiet enough fan.

Thinking about GeForce7200 Gs or the GeForce8400 gs

Is it worth getting the 8400 for an extra 12 euro?

As for how new of a game, hopefully CoD 5, Gta 4, Sacred 2.

    Am I just dreaming?

Edit: Oh ya this is the ram I have in my old PC, is it any good, and will I able to just slot it into the new Pc ?

I'm no PC expert, but I'm pretty sure you need to be looking at DDR2.

Skykes: Pryromaniac's offer is fucking awesome over the crappy 8400GS.

The 8400GS is a low-end budget card. You'd probably be able to play most of the recent games, but don't expect them to run at anything but lower end settings. Your old 6600GT would beat the 8400GS in memory bandwith and speed but lose in shaders.

So you might be able to play games in higher resolutions, but there's more of a chance that they'd run sluggish. That said, the 8400GS has better DVD enconding, uses less power and supports DirectX 10. Personally, I'd reccomend against getting an 8400GS. They're pretty much meant for people looking to watch movies and plug in the monitor over games.

I presume you want it for games?

Here's a tip. For Nvidia cards, don't touch anything lower then a 7 in the -X-- spot. The second number denotes it's strength more or less. 1-3 is essentially for being able to see the screen when you turn the PC on, 4 is if you luv you some fucking minesweeper, 5 for decent looking video, 6 for old ass games on low quality. 7's a decent budget card, but they skimp big time on RAM, and 8-9 are the monster cards.

    Just saw the thread-

I actually own a nvidia geforce 8400 GS, honestly they aren't that terrible. I picked mine up over craigs list for about $25, not a bad investment. It's setup in my spare box now, which can run crysis at medium settings, at 20-24 average FPS. Can play CoD4/CoD5 well with an average of 40 FPS, Assasins Creed runs fine also. If you can get it on the cheap, a 8400 GS isn't a terrible card is what I'm trying to say.

However look for deals at your local stores, on the 23rd I managed to pick up a returned nvidia geforce 8800 GTS for $89.99 over at circuit city :D. It's quite a good card for that kind of money, even new it's cheap. You can get a new 8800 GTS for $150 over at best buy.

EDIT:Should have read thread better >_>.

Take the (other) pyros offer, $10 for that card is a god send.

Ah, I don't have anything crash-hot. I saved up 500$ last Christmas and went and built myself a new machine. It's an e4600 (Core 2 Duo 2.4, FSB 800, 2mb L2 cache) on a GA-73PVM-S2H el'cheapo motherboard. 2 gig of DDR2/800, about 900gig in HDD space and an XFX 8600GT factory overclocked graphics card.

I've been attempting to upgrade the latter through the site that it known as ebay. When I built my PC, I had my 17" CRT monitor in mind and it ran pretty well. When I got a 22" LCD for my birthday, I noticed that it hiccups and can run sluggish in some games, like Fallout 3 in a 'heavy' area.
