Jesus. The American GOF book cover version of Harry looks so fucking gay.

The American Cover version looks like it was done by the same guy who drew the covers for A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Anyway, I find it hard to believe that just robes would be worn. But then again, I'm seeing robes as a kind of button up cloak/dressing robe/jumper mix. I always imagined it as jeans, T-shirts or something else underneath, maybe a wife beater for any fags going to Hogwarts. The robes always just struck me as a formal sort of wear, like a Private School's blazer.

    Wiki defines 'robes' as:

Outer garment. Which implies shit has to be worn under it. I doubt every student walks around with his robes buttoned up for the whole day to cover up his underwear and such. Maybe the purebloods wear some sort of special under-robe or yeah, breeches or something, which covers up under everything. But I can't believe it's just the robes and underwear and nothing else.

They wore stuff under their robes. In GoF, the wizard wearing a dress was all excited about his privates getting aired out. Since he was so out of touch with muggles, he's probably a good example of a typical pureblood wizard. And when Fudge is introduced in PoA, he's described as wearing green trousers. I know both of these are examples of wizards out of Hogwarts, but if this is the norm out, then it's probably the norm in Hogwarts as well.

    See: HP Lexicon on clothing.

I have absolutely no canon proof for this view, but I always imagined 1-3 year uniforms as being like they are portrayed in the movies, as typical prep school uniforms with plain black robes with House symbol on them.

Years 4-5, wizardy under robe clothes (I always pictured this as floor sweeping dresses with any kind of school appropriate bodice for the girls and tunics and breeches for the guys) in house colors (a Gryffindor would have to wear red/gold, they couldnt go waltzing around in green or siver to classes. Nothing to do with meals, weekends, Hogsmeade, or formal events.) underneath plain black robes with the House symbol on them.

And finally, Years 6-7, you can wear anything, be it Muggle or Wizard, as long as it is school apropriate and you have the plain black robes with your House symbol on them.

BTW, when I say school appropriate, I mean something that you could wear to a junior-high/middle school without getting in truble. After all, a First year at Hogwarts is the equivalent of 6th grade at a Muggle school, which, at least where I live, is when you start middle school

Only problem with that few GothOddity is the school uniform culture in Britain. I don't know stats, but more school than not require a set uniform to worn, you know kinda like Hogwarts does. Why would Hogwarts then let its final two years wear whatever they wanted? It would cause unneeded jealousy and tension between the year groups, which a standardised uniform would negate.

I think she knows that, Mordecai, that's just what she imagines it's like. Just like I imagine Blaise Zabini is still a hot girl. <_<

Yeah, I kind of figured that, but I guess I just rationalized it as being like the Hogsmeade trips or the Age Line in GoF. Even though that makes no sense as the Age Line was only installed for safety.

The movie school uniforms always bothered me. They look like every other boarding-school student with them, especially when they drop the robes. That flies directly in the face of Harry never having any clothes that actually fit. Likewise, if the Wizards were just copying the Muggles for as long as they had uniforms... well, then the scene at the World Cup makes no sense whatsoever, because school uniforms have been a staple for longer than any of the Wizards there have been alive.

The inconsistencies in the books I also attribute on JKR being influenced by the movies, as others have said. She even said as much herself, though not directly in relation to the topic.

As for how I see them? Closer to what wiki tells me is called a Cassok, only with fewer buttons and with far more varied styles. The robes of a friar (one of the Capuchin Order in particular, if wiki isn't lying to me) also are a good visual representation, perhaps even a better one. What you are wearing under them doesn't really matter, and even naked is an option.

A mixture of those two styles should produce something close to what the wizards have, in my opinion. Use a black, unadorned version for the school robe. (House crest being added as needed.)

Just add color in various patterns, introduce various adornments for more elaborate looks, perform some minor to major cut variations, and you also have dress robes for both genders. No need for those would be white tie imitations of the 4th movie.

Gandalf; Wears a robe, a cloak and a wizards hat. Exactly what is on the Hogwart's supply list. Imagine him in black. EOT.

This is sufficient. Note the hat, and wizard robes. Along with underdress and logo on breast.

Does anyone ever actually picture them with full-blown pointed wizarding hat on? The list Harry gets from Hagrid lists "One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear," implying Rowling first thought they would wear it as a normal part of their clothing. But tall hats like that would seem to be impractical for day wear, and seeing as how she almost never mentions them again, it seems that Rowling pretty much ignored them.

I have never, in my years of reading the books, or reading fanfiction, placed the image in my mind of 'any' Harry Potter character wearing a pointy hat, in touch with magic they may be, but you would have to become at least a little insane to wear something like that! well....maybe vold then...and on a smaller scale albus.

As for Rowling ignoring things, she does that through out all of the books, the plot hole thread being evidence enough.

Oddly enough, no for the named characters, but yes for unnamed characters :p

Well I have always imagined their uniforms like we see in the movies; shoes, pants, shirt, tie in house colors and on top of all that a black robe with their house crest.

After GoF tough I kind of imagined them wearing whatever they wanted underneath and only using the black robes with the crest.

Well, I rather like GothOddity's version of how she pictures the uniforms to be, but I also agree with Moredecai in that it might cause some jealousy between the different years.

Anyone else think that Harry looks like a full blown retard on the GoF cover?

Either that or he's on shrooms.

Lady Sorrows: Apparently not since I have no idea what that is, but I'm assuming it's to not post on a thread that hasn't been posted on for a while.

Demons In The Night: Yes, I do think Harry looks really retarded on the GoF cover.
