I'm pretty sure children are taught only 'Social Studies' (Apparently History and Geography in one class) here in the US, and from what I've seen, geography isn't focused upon (At least from my experience) except for a few pretty maps and huge US map hung somewhere in any classroom.

Edit: I'm not from the US originally, so I don't know much before High School. In High School I just learned History.

 

6th grade history? Yeah, no this wouldn't really be relevant to pretty much anything I learned in sixth grade. Sixth grade I learned...Early civilizations.
