An Unfortunate realization

I am not quite sure that this is where I should post this or if there is another thread with a similar subject, if there is feel free to get rid of this thread with prejudice.

I have come to the unfortunate realization that Harry Potter Fanfiction is slowly dying. While there are still a huge amount of stories out there, the titans of HPFF, the greater writers are falling off the board. There has been an influx of crap stories since the advent of DH and the ending of the series (an ending which, to put it frankly sucked old, hairy donkey nuts). There is also a large slash base out there which has me pondering the sanity of humans at times. To put it straight I am not a homophobic nor against homosexuality, my cousin is one and he is a wicked cool dude. The problem I have is that no homosexuality exists in the Canon world of HP (disregarding Rowlings late admitance that Dumbles was gay, she added in that fact after DH released).

Now, I realize that quite abit of this info is redundant, as we all have realized it, unless of course you have been living in a hole. However, beside venting a bit of annoyance after searching FF.net for good stories and get to much slash as a result, one of the main purposes of this thread is to hopefully start a resugrence of good HPFF. I realize we have our own honored FF site, the revered PatrounusCharms.net, but new stories and update are slow and far between. What I propose is that we, as DLPers invite worthy writers to our site so that they can write their stories there without people like the FF.net Nazi's giving them the boot. With an increase in writers and the news spreading the site should be given a popularity boost as well.

I would like some of your thoughts on this as I am curious to your reactions.

The majority of all decent writers are either members already or they have their stories closely followed by us anyway. And yes, we do all already know about the death of quality hp fanfiction. Also, PS3 typing ftw.

Seek the loving embrace of the Dresden Files. We needed new blood to revitalize the fandom - Jim Butcher has provided it to us.

Meh, it's not the end of the world. HP fanfiction has had a good and absurdly large run.

As noted above, the Dresden Files is providing a wonderful new focus for writers. Perhaps one day a member of this forum will even write a Codex Alera fic!

HPFF isn't dead, I can't keep up with the amount of updates I get in my inbox. I'm reading far more active WiP's atm than I ever was when I joined DLP. All that's died is some enthusiasm in the reader base.

You have just had an epiphany. :awesome

I'm happy to see many of the 'giants' go. There were a select few of the classics that I liked upon first reading and kept liking in retrospect. The rest covered the ground to spawn cliches that force the current writers to avoid them.

Several of the mainstays whose works I do like are still writing, even if they aren't as active. Jon3776 and Ruskbyte foremost among them.

Mizuni-sama's (Prince of the Dark Kingdom) writing is the closest fanfiction has come to technical perfection and he updated not a week ago.

At least it's a slow death.

There was a thread like this a while back, and I'll say now what I said then: it's my opinion that the HP fan fiction fandom is in pretty much the same condition it has been in for years, it's just that us as a group of fan fiction readers have experienced a continual and gradual maturity with regards to our fan fic tastes, which has led to higher standards, which gives the impression that there is less fan fic out there.

This isn't the case. It just seems like there's less good fan fic out there, because it takes better and better story telling to keep us interested.

    I agree with Taure.

The HP fandom hasn't fundamentally changed.

You, Dark Lord Aexyon, have just gotten older.

Another year or two, and you'll stop reading fanfiction altogether.

You don't stop fanfiction Lyndon. You can say you stop, you may stop for a while, but there will be a point that you come back, if only to satisfy your own curiosity.

That said Taure captured the gist of it.

Very much this. You can only read about Hogwarts so many times before you start to lose interest.

I agree. Despite the quality remaining at a relatively stable level, the fact is that there are only so many ways to rehash one idea until the point where even a technically great story will bring nothing new to the genre. It's harder to come up with a truly original idea that will capture the attention of the reader base.

And on the contrary I have about 6-7 fics that update weekly and could not, in any respect, be called bad.

    List them for me? :/

I'd love to have that many fics that are updated weekly

If you think that FF is "dying", wait until the next 3 movies come out.

Every time something HP related is released theres a resurgence of crap but also some good fics.

I know for a fact that Measure for Measure is bad. I'll edit my post with the results of the other stories.

Also, Jenkins, your location is wrong. And MrMucus... well... SONIC BOOM!

NoFP started out great but now that the update rate is so slow, I can't help but feel the author and/or story has run out of steam. I mean, two chapters in more than a year? I'm being a little hypocritical, since I still have high hopes for Full Pensieve's epic and totally awe-inspiring stories, but NoFP just seems to be faltering.

And yes, The Time Meddlers started out with a good premise, especially since Harry and Hermione were more than willing to actually KILL Death Eaters, no fucking around, but now that there's a "new prophecy" - from Luna, of course - I'm having trouble keeping any interest in the story.

As for the others, I haven't read them, but any story that involves Dudley doing magic is an automatic "NO" from me personally.

[EDIT] Let me add that Forging the Sword by Myst Shadow is a very good story that happens to have been updated recently. It's much more character-driven, at least right now, but the writing is very good and the characterization is some of the best I've seen in quite some time.

Also, As Yet Untitled by bellerophon30 is a post-DH fic that has a no-nonsense Harry. Be forewarned that it is Harry/Hermione, but the relationship is very little of the story other than to add conflict with the Weasleys, especially Molly.
