I wrote a similar concept in Caece Inlustratus, but it was used to study duels. It is perfectly adapted for forensics.

The most useful spell ever invented in the history of the universe:

    Title: Gourd Nomen Change

Description: It legally changes the recipient's name to Gordon.

EDIT: Added a little bit of history to Cremare spell because of Aekiel. After I read his post, I knew if I didn't do it it would bug the shit out of me.

Alright, figured I'd go ahead and post some of the spells I created so others can use them.

    Cremare- To consume by fire

Spell Effect- Causes liberal amounts of fire to come into existence around the target. Essentially a large globe of swirling, superheated fire.

    Charm

This spell was developed in medieval times during the Black Plague. It was necessary for the bodies of the deceased to be burned, quickly and efficiently. As such, the spell is rather easy to perform in wand movement and incantation, yet requires a powerful will to keep the flames from escaping. It is now most commonly used as the preferred spell for cremation.

Cremare also caused the Great Fire of London in 1666. A teenage boy, whose family had just passed away because of the Plague, tried to burn the bodies with the spell he had seen his father use. He lacked the necessary willpower to contain the globe of fire, and the fire quickly spread, destroying large amounts of London.

Declino- To deflect, diverge, change direction, turn aside

Spell effect- Causes a small, invisible hook on the end of casters wand to appear. It's possible to catch an incoming spell with this hook and reverse it's direction before releasing it, if the timing is right. If it's not, however, the spell will merely be deflected away.

    Defensive Magic

This spell was created in 1839, as a possible way to block the Unforgivable Curses. It was, as the spell creator found out during testing, unsuccessful. It was later found to be useful in deflecting shield-breakers, or piercers, by a professional duelist.

And I know other people have posted this spell, so I'm just going to provide my incantation and translation for it. Fiendfyre.

Effera Flamma- Effera; wild, savage. Flamma; blazing fire.

You all know what it does.

(I haven't read through this entire thread, so if a similar spell to this has been posted, I apologize)

    Incantation: Skelestum Patronum
    Latin, "Wicked Protector"
Requires caster to focus on feelings of aggression, fear, and anger.

    Classification: Borderline Dark Spell.

Effect: When properly cast, the wizard/witch will conjure a black, cloud-like mass taking a form unique to the caster. This mass (known as a dark patronus) is able to interact with physical creatures such as humans and animals, but not dementors or ghosts. The dark patronus, under direction of the caster, will attack a target and can only be dispelled by the caster's dismissal or lapse in concentration, or if directly hit by a spell that disrupts the magic keeping the dark patronus corporeal.

If you add a bit of history to it you can also claim this is what started the Great Fire of London in 1666. That was one of the biggest outbreaks that hit London and all it would take is one overworked or under skilled wizard to mess up and let the fire go haywire.

Addendium: this spell was originally developed accidentally in an attempt to find something capable of dealing with dementers in a more permanent fashion. Sadly the dementors passed it by without even pausing. and the spell was all but forgotten.

It received a second Renaissance with the outbreak of the muggle WWII and grindwalds rise to power as it was used to demoralize and harass troops who, upon disrupting it, tended to think they had been exposed to hallucinogenic gasses of some kind, and mostly ignored the shallow cuts left by these barely corporeal warriors.

late in grindwalds campaign there was an attempt made to allow these specters to inflict more than superficial damage, but sadly (or thankfully depending on which side of the conflict you were on) nothing of the sort was managed.

Name: Maior Inferius (Greater Inferius), AKA Revenant
    Classification: Dark Ritual. Illegal.
    Incantation:
"Corpse, hear me, I summon you
I give you these words, so that you answer my call
I give you the soil of your grave, so that you remember the world from which you came
(Sprinkle soil from the corpse's grave/where it died on it)
I give you the flesh of the living, so that you remember the taste of life
(Insert recently living human flesh into the mouth of the corpse)
I give you my blood, so that you remember me, who brought you to this world
(Caster spills a portion of their blood onto the corpse's face)
    I have called upon you!
    Arise, corpse!
    Arise, Maior Inferius!
    Arise! Arise!
    Serve Me!
    Arise! Arise!"

(Note: At least something along these lines. If you can come up with a better incantation or anything, go for it)

Effect: The corpse is reanimated as a more sophisticated form of inferius. Like its lesser cousins, it is vulnerable to light, heat, and flame (although to a lesser extent than a normal inferius), and thus is strongest at night or in dark places. It is also granted a greater degree of physical strength and intelligence, but only in the service of its master. It is capable of speech and the use of complicated tools. It can repair itself by consuming human flesh.

Due to the degree of skill and power required for the ritual, such creatures are often utilized by more experienced Dark Wizards as a cat's paw to take out individual enemies, or to act as bodyguards. As a result of the use of his/her blood in the ritual, when a Greater Inferius is destroyed, the caster will experience a backlash of pain.

The exact origins of the ritual are unknown, as a result of its very dark and occult nature, but reports of Greater Inferius (or creatures similar) date back to Roman Empire. These are very obscure cases and happened rarely at that time. Greater Inferius became more common during the High Middle Ages and were also known as Revenants by muggles at that time.

    Spell Name: Candy Overflow
    Incantation: Superfluo Dulcis Nutrimens
Spell Effect: Causes candy to explode from every orifice of the target, usually resulting in gruesome death. It does this by transforming the blood and various internal organs into various confectioneries as they are ejected from the body.

Additional Facts: This spell is a derivative of the infamous Cruentus Superfluo spell, which caused the victim to violently eject blood from various orifices. In 1970, wizard eccentric Wilbert Wonka made a modified version in hopes that it would be less disturbing, and to also increase efficiency in his factory when he encountered a problem with rodents. Today, Wonka remains in St. Mungo's Mental Health Ward.

Looked through a bunch of these and loved it :p
here's one of my own device.

    Spell Name: Cultivation Curse
    Incantation:Exerceo Bacterium (ex-SER-sero bac-TE-rium)
    Meaning: Cultivate Bacteria.
Spell Effect: Cultivates malicious bacteria in the victim's body, causing death within 2-4 hours, depending on the victim's immune system.
    Spell: Charm.
    Spell Classification: Healing, Dark Arts.

Additional Facts: This spell was invented by one of Alexander Flemming's compeditors in 1926, because he was tired of waiting for his bacteria farms to cultivate properly. He used the curse on rats, for testing purposes. He died in 1927, because the curse backfired, due to him spello-taping his broken wand.

    Spell Name: The Golem Spell
Incantation:Two Parts: Calx Vir (pause) Elohim
    Background: Latin and Hebrew;
cast with a counter clockwise swish and a flick downwards towards an earth based element (ie: soil or metal) followed by a wand thrust precisely at the head of the sculpture.
Spell Effect: Raises a stone or metal sculpture of a human male and brings it to life in a limited fashion.
Spell: Dark Art (by reputation) Transfiguration / Charm.
    Spell Classification: Arcane

Additional Facts: Combines the Renaissance sculpture spell Calx Vir (made famous by the Italian witch Michelle de Angelos; a superior spell to more ancient sculpture spells except those of the Greek mages, which are lost to time) with the ancient Hebrew Golem ritual. In theory, any sculpture spell will work as long as it is followed by the second half of the spell. Calx Vir is preferred as the result is anatomically correct and even psychologically disconcerting to some people.

Can be easily countered by one versed in Hebrew magics. Met (death), an ancient, blockable killing curse, will deactivate the golem. Emet (truth) will reactivate the golem. Two opponents skilled in Hebrew magics theoretically could deactivate and reactivate multiple golems multiple times in the course of a duel.

Depending on the source material, the golem can also be defeated through a variety of blasting or melting spells, but only after considerable damage, making for a unique battlefield shield despite its moderately high power requirements and two part casting.

Most famously, the spell was used in the sixteenth century in Bohemia, resulting temporarily in the end of the traditional Durmstrang Mudblood Hunt. Because of its use against the cream of Eastern European pureblood society (Durmstrang Class of 1589 took 85% casualties during the hunt) many ministries classify the golem spell as a dark art.

Umm, the Grimoire Discussion Thread is sort of closed at the moment, making it hard to discuss or post new spells.

Anyway, just a couple of spells I've worked on for stories...

    Name: True Sight
    Incantation: Vereconspicus
Root: Latin; "Vere" - True/In fact/Real, "Conspicio" - to catch sight of, perceive, behold, understand
Effect: When viewed through a charmed object (Glasses/Monocle/Magical Eye) allows one to see anything magically concealed.
    Classification: Charms
Pros: Can see through any form of magical concealment, i.e. Invisibility Charms/Cloaks, Glamour Charms, etc.
Cons: Can only be viewed through a charmed object like glasses, cannot be used upon organic objects (like your eye).

    Name: Concussive Curse
    Incantation: Concusio
Root: Latin; "concussus" - to strike together, "concutere" - to shake violently
Effect: Gives the victim effect similar to having suffered a concussion, ranging from disorientation to unconsciousness, and all other side effects in between.
    Classification: Duelling Art/Dark Art
    Pros: Very fast moving spell.
Cons: Easily shielded/blocked, classified as a Dark Art because it can cause permanent brain damage if hit with too many times.

About that Grimoire thread, needs moar fire. Maybe a section for elemental spells. Or add Fiendfyre to the Dark Arts section.

Yeah, I'm aware of where it ought to go...just unaware of how to put it there.

    In other news...

Just a suggestion, but perhaps we need to add a section for other things as well? Not just spells.

Like Rituals and magical devices and such, stuff that is realistic (cannon wise, of course). i.e. - no 135 bedroom, 30 bath, etc. etc. mansion in a trunk. Or ritual of epic awesomeness that gives one werewolf strength and stamina, vampire speed and agility, Veela charm, mage sight, and so on and so forth.

    Name: Devil's Fire
    Incantation: Incendia Ex Abyssus
Wand Movements: Reversed Thurisaz rune (meaning evil/malice) followed by reversed Sowilo rune (meaning destruction/wrath of a god) finished with a left to right slash.
Effect: Torrent of crimson fire erupts from the runes after a slight delay
Manifestation: Runes hang in the air after completion, they are black as night with wisps of black smoke being emitted. They then flash a deep crimson and alight. The fire has no distinguishable shape.
Additional Information: Devil's Fire is extremely difficult to put out, due to the high concentration of magic within the flames. However it is extremely difficult to maintain, as it is very draining and the fire is likely to consume the caster if they are unable to escape, it can also be destroyed by the destruction of the runes. After the spell has ended, the magic is taken out of the fire, but the fire itself still remains.

    Name: Jailor's Hex
    Incantation: Ferratilis
Wand Movements: Two slashes forming an X followed by a flick.
Effect: Three chains erupt out of the wand to bind the target, speed and effectiveness of the bonds depend on the casters control
Manifestation: Cold silver chains which have a slight luminescent glow

This thread isn't supposed to be in use anymore...

...though, that said, I don't think the Grimoire is in use either.
