I just had a little brain-wave. I've noticed that the magical world has an absence of religion, or at least a specific one.

So what does DLP think of Harry having some kind of epiphany and starting his own religion/reviving one? Harry could become a theocrat, and lead his own little religious revolution. The properties of this deity are obviously up to the author.

And of course, at the end of the day, his epiphany could be a delusion if you are so inclined.

    EDIT:

Wicca and Druid shit is rejected.

All hail the magic trunk. The true God of all independent wizards seeking the knowledge of dark magic from 'dark arts for dummies' and deflecting killing curses with a rusty sword.

JK wouldn't be caught dead discussing religion on the book series. She's messing enough with the catholic church already by spreadin' the evil ways of witchcraft.

I was thinking more along the lines of a God of Death, or something omniscient like that.

But if you bow to the great and holy magic trunk, I won't stop you. Whatever floats your boat.

JK Rowling can go get brutally ass raped and then eviscerated for all I care. If she doesn't feel like religion belongs in her books, that her call, but I certainly am not bound by canon.

Scientology!Harry would be epic if done correctly.

If this idea isn't crafted superbly well - and I mean bloody superbly - then it is destined to feel the wrath of a thousand flames, and not just from DLP. And I mean it. Making Harry have an actual 'religious revival' would take some extensive and well-planned plotting before the idea is even approachable, and the characterization would have to be EXTREMELY good. Seriously, I don't even know if the best of DLP authors could pull this off without either ruining the idea.

Only way I can see this idea realistically working is Harry pushing the whole 'scam religion' idea so he can get support from the masses - he might use religion, but he doesn't really believe in it. And even with that, the plotting would have to be extremely thorough.

I dunno, maybe it's because it seems like the magical community has a slight aversion to religion - probably because religion was responsible for killing a shitload of witches and wizards during the Middle Ages. Why would they be so inclined to embrace religion at all?

I recall reading a fic that had Harry traveling way into the future where he's worshiped as a god. It was really, really bad, though.

I can just picture Harry convincing Voldemort to sit down and take a "free stress test"

lol, I think I remember that one.

Was it like the one where magic had degraded so he was like the only one who could do anything?

There always Prince of the dark kingdom and its paganic lore.
I also remember a fic where Harry was raised by some wicca girl.
There was that one with Harry smacking things with thor's hammer, Heck maybe deatheaters could be portrayed as some sort of cult?

The tricky part would be developing a plot that envelop any religion and keep at it till the end, without losing the story focus...

The idea seems like a good plot. All we need is someone to pull it off.

Oh shit... I remember this one series of fics called "The Girl Who Lived" which were mostly word-for-word rewrites of the books except with Harry as a girl and some weird shit about girl!Harry becoming a druidess added in. In the story, druidesses had to be naked at all times, so they wore special charmed chains around their waists that created the illusion of clothes whenever they were in public.

I don't remember where I stopped reading, but the author went on to rewrite at least the first five books. The only reason I still remember it is because of its sheer WTF factor.

Religion in HP is teh gheeeey. A few fics have tried to extrapolate the presence of religion in the HP-verse because of the saint in St. Mungo's. Cults are just as stupid. Wicca shit is stupid. Scientology is too stupid to write about irl, much less fanfiction.

I think that's something that I should add in, no Wicca or druid shit. That's what you normally get in HP fanfiction, and it sucks.

Oh yeah, I remember the satanist one where Vernon raised both of his "sons" as satanists, and then he (coincidentally) met Hermione's father, who also happened to be a satanist. I recall it being somewhat entertaining.

Harry goes back in time and fights Jesus.

No... it has nothing to do with the topic at hand, but somebody should write it.
