Actual Army. Military Intelligence to be more precise. As for why would I blow 10k? Because I don't want to buy anything like a car etc.

 

Yeah, just get a still pretty damn good computer for $2000-$3000 and keep the rest. For, you know, food, rent, bills, that sort of stuff. Don't you know we're in an economic crisis?

And to burn a load of cash on something that is not only a luxury but also beyond luxury into the point of spending money for the sake of apparently not wanting to have the money sitting in your account just because you think you might not need it for essentials in the future is beyond folly. If you're so keen to be an idiot at least don't try to spend it all on one box. Buy a TV, a games console (or all of them), home cinema system, that kind of stuff. Or go find a classy hooker and get laid. Or get some nice clothes. Get a personal trainer and lose weight. Get a girl of your own instead of the hooker.

Also bear in mind that no matter how good a computer you get today, within 2 years it will already be getting old.

Have a mind for your future self as well as blowing money in the present. You might want to buy another computer in a few years. You might like to take a holiday. One day you might want a car. You might get a girlfriend and want the spare cash to take her nice places. Hell, you might want to propose (nice rings are pricey) and have a family. You might want to get a house and have to put a large deposit down. You might have to suddenly pay a load of money for something you weren't expecting, like private healthcare.

 

I love technology as much as the next guy, but if you blow $10k on a computer (that you could probably build for $3k by the time you get out) you deserve to be cockpunched.

I'm guessing the reason why he wants a killer computer is to play games... so getting a Mac is a bit self-defeating.

Canadian soldiers make good money. Officers start with about 45K / year and you usually make Captain by your next contract renewal (4 years) which will put you up to about 60k/year. Majors make about 80k/year.

We don't have private health-care. Never will. It's too engrained into the public mind to ever give it up.

I can't be deployed outside of Canada for at least 2 years due to training requirements for all soldiers. (BMQ / SQ / Command Training / Leadership training / Officer Training / Trade Training) my trade will be Intelligence, so it's unlikely that I'd get deployed overseas, considering the two major Intelligence bases are CFB Halifax and CFB Esquimalt.

So yeah. Military =/= bad job.

As for the money on a computer, it's a thought experiment to see what is on the market for that kind of money.
