Hey. You're on a forum named "Dark Lord Potter".

Now some people feel that the internet is the only place they're going to ever get close to having "friends" - or a social life. That's fine. Your IRL may be miserable and the thought of discussing HP may be "uncool" or "gay" and you don't care. Also fine. But here's the problem (there is one).

This is the Harry Potter Discussion part of a Harry Potter Forum. Having personally started nerdy discussions like the DLP take on Magical Government and a discussions countdown of relevant topics pertaining to Deathly Hallows (and numerous other things), I think it's fair to say I was under the impression that that was the purpose of this forum. And that at least one other person cares besides Taure, making "nobody cares besides Taure" impossible to say.

Never mind that these topics tend to always pale in comparison to threads like "Harry/Fleur!!1". And I suppose more people put unknown model and/or pornstar playing the part of unnamed/and or little heard of female Slytherin character in their signature pics. And yeah I get it - the people who do that are desperately trying to get laid/are retarded. But again, there are other reasons for liking Harry Potter than imagining myself as Harry Potter fucking Cho Chang or Fleur Delacour or Hitsosumihiro-san-chan (sorry Sera).

We generally enjoyed the series. And despite the thousands of errors made by the author and the millions of chances potentially missed, we still look at it and wonder and question certain things. Yeah - it's "gay". It's "nerdy", "faggoty" and potentially uncool. But at the end of the day, Taure's not overweight and is getting laid, I'm not overweight nor am I getting laid (but soon!)... and the people complaining are under-paid, little appreciated people who surf 4chan for all their social needs.

Also, instead of bitching about HP-related discussion on an HP forum, might I suggest twitter? Or facebook. Both are all the rage atm, even amongst Republicans.

That said, getting onto the OP: yes, I agree. EU of Star Wars directly deals with this all the time. Splinter of the Mind's Eye is one example and Shatterpoint is another. The creator says something that is vaguely worded or is poorly conceived and the people apart of the community try to fill the void - you come up with things like the Rule of Two, reasons for Yoda knowing that it exists, Qui Gon, Coruscant, etc.

It's a great example of where the creator is a complete dumbass and the community creates in-world explanations to make up for out-world failures. I'm sure EU is wondering how the apprentice of the chosen one (Ahsoka) failed to garner a mention in Episode III, IV, V or VI and I imagine after the 3d shit is done, they'll help fix that up.

Another example is HPL - which was Rowling's source for double-checking until she decided only encyclopedias created before she decided to make hers get to exist. There's little doubt it had influence because Steve van der Ark or w/e compiled hundreds of essays discussing everything from where the characters originated from in Britain to even compiling timelines and maps that were later used.

When an author writes something, the people who read it get to do what they want - and sometimes there's a consensus over a certain want. Would Draco Malfoy really have been spared Fiendfyre or a more deserving fate had the fangirl community and people like Cassandra Claire not made him much more palatable through retconning the fuck out of him in every story? Or making it seem like he had a soul or was just a spoiled little shit with a potential to "love" (LOL)?

Because if you read the interviews leading up to HBP, you'd think the author thought Draco Malfoy was irredeemable and a very bad person.

Now I can guess that if someone comes up with a really great reason for the Fidelius Charm quagmire caused on October 31, 1980 in the book, and people adopt it, it may spurn Rowling to add something along those lines while she's plotting her encyclopedia - and heh, it becomes "canon" and the fuck-up's gone.

Same with 17th century wizards. People enjoy that sort of shit. We escape into the world because we enjoy its premise. When suspension of disbelief is threatened, some of us naturally manufacture a reason regardless of what the author thinks. Cliques develop and that reasoning becomes "law" within that circle.

Now, others prefer Ctrl+Fing and replacing Ginny with Fleur or Daphne or reading a fanfic that does it for them - but that's also fine.

I've never seen anyone use this as a reason why someone shouldn't debat the logistics in a book, actually...

Back on topic, I'd say that both reasons were viable, but, hopefully, the in-world reason is a viable out-world reason too. For example, why did Harry want to kill Voldemort? Well, he had killed his parents, and there was a prophecy that might be about him, which is an "in-world" explanation. However, even if we realize the story isn't real, if it were me, in real life, and someone had killed my parents, terrorized my society, and I was the only one who could kill him, I'd damn well kill him. If I understand an out-world justifiction, that is.
