Well I think that the sad truth here is that a witch or wizard having inexplicable, powerful, and unique abilities is canon, with Tonks as the example.

Following JKR's precedent, an author doesn't need an excuse to make up shit and not explain it, no matter how lame it may be.

    It's magic, baby!

Well, yeah. I wasn't pointing out positive evidence, only a lack of too much negative evidence. That isn't useful if you want to argue Canon, but it is very much useful if you want to write FF. Your first argument can be explained away by any number of reasons, I should think it'd be possible to come up with something that sounds plausible enough.

As for the second one ... well, that could be used nicely as a way to paint Dumbledore as someone who clings to his believes despite factual evidence that says otherwise, or even one step further (and arguably better), someone who attempts to level society because he is deeply convinced it should be, even though or rather, because he knows that isn't how it really is (if you were to write that particular AU, I mean).

And that it would negate the theme of the books is something I really really have no problem whatsoever with :p

As for whether or not hereditary abilities are lame ... meh, Parseltongue is cool. It really depends on the execution of the idea.

Not really. Harry Potter becoming X-Men is fail no matter how you spin it.

Note: Tonks could have received her abilities through her father's ancestry rather than her mother's. (That is, provided canon didn't establish that Ted Tonks was a muggle or muggleborn... if so, then the point is void and I will also add, "My bad".)

Anyway, hereditary abilities aren't always lame. Veelas pass down some pretty cool abilities, Parseltongue is straight, Metamorphs are dank. And it's an established rule that anyone can make any plot point (canon or otherwise) a good one, provided that they write it in a believeable way. For example, Taure mentions Harry Potter becoming X-men (Marvel) being fail, but Water Mage is writing Project M, and thus far it's pretty epic... even with normally fail ideas like his wand being inserted into his arms to produce "wandless" magic, and a Muggle-made restraint that cuts off his magic completely. If most authors wrote that idea we'd shit on them quicker than fat kids in restrooms.

As for Water Mages story, I agree with the horrid muggle collar. Thats stupid. But in his defense, Harry is still using magic. He hasnt spontaneously become a mutant or fallen into a vat of toxic waste and gained super powers.

Harry Potter and the World that Waits proves you wrong, but then in the general case, I'd agree with you.

In all fairness, I don't think JKR has read the books either.

At least, that was the impression I got when I read the last two books.

No, it doesn't. He might join the X-Men, but he isn't a mutant. 'Fusion' in the WBA, on the other hand, does.

With regards to World that Waits: that's a crossover, not HP universe taking on aspects of the X-Men one.

And it's the only decent X-Men crossover at that.

With regard to the other fics you mentioned: clearly we have different standards as to what constitutes a good fic.
