Unbreakable, starring Bruce Willis, is a pretty good one. Unique. But if you're looking to see how Shyamalan does out of his typical song and dance, it won't give you a good idea.

Dunno much about Avatar... my eleven year old nephew watches it so I assume it is made for pre-teen to young adult. But I will say I've seen him watching it, and the main character looks totally gay compared to the anime. I wish he'd keep the hood on.

    Other than that:

Dev Patel > Jesse McCartney - it would have been instant fail without an actual ACTOR in the movie.

You're all idiots if you think that this is going to be any good at all.

Also, Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American-made cartoon that is supposed to look like animu because people got sick or the ridiculous body styles of DC and Marvel. I guess not everybody likes the Darius scale of physical fitness. Brah.

Yeah, to answer the question of what Avatar is, it's basically American Anime. I know that sounds crazy, but it's the best way of describing it that I can think of. I'd guess the age range it aims for is the 9-14 demographic.

The basic premise is that among the general population there are people who are Benders. I.e. they can manipulate one of the 4 elements of Wind, Fire, Water, and Earth. Most people can only manipulate one of the 4, but the Avatar can use all of them. He is supposed to help keep the balance. The world is divided into 4 Nations, and you guessed it, they are based on the 4 elements. The Fire Nation is trying to take over the world though, and wiped out the Air Nomads in an attempt to kill the Avatar (who didn't die, or we wouldn't have a show). The story is about the Avatar trying to end this war and prevent the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom from also being wiped out or taken over.

I know that "warez" denotes linking to things that are illegal, or something along those lines, because I google'd it after reading the warning in the forums. Does that mean if I see, like, episode one of this on Veoh or something that I can't link to it? I'm not really clear on what the rules are on that, and I feel stupid as hell saying this, but could someone maybe update that thread to explain what Warez means?

I looked around Youtube for something. Here's a link to some fight scenes from the show. Should be good to check out if you are curious what the animation style looks like, in case that is a determining factor for you in deciding to watch the series, though it's not the best AMV ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8CR951OaKE

Harry Potter is also made for pre-teen to young adult. ;)

You should know by now that there are some things that appeal to all age groups: Avatar is one of these things. Amazing fight scenes, good story, funny one liners. There's not a single episode of Avatar I actually disliked. And there's still more to come, I'm assuming, the series finale left us with one huge hanging question which I assume is going to be answered in an animated movie sequel.

How do any of you think this is going to succeed?

    The cast is white.

And he looks like Zuko to you?

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2443758/ <-- looks nothing like Katara, sorry.

Yeah, he definitely looks like an eastern monk.

More like an eight year old, white kid in a halloween costume.

Nope. There's no animated sequel in the works. At least not until after the movie comes out. And then it'll depend on the success of the movie.

But seriously, anyone who hasn't see it yet has to go out and watch them somehow. I would recommending buying the dvds but hell, do what you have to. It's better than most animes that I've seen in recent years.

Okay. That was funny. But only because I saw an eight year old with a costume like that last Halloween. But you want to see funny, look up who they have listed as the Fire Nation guys.

    Edit: Okay found them

    Iroh: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0869467/
    Zhao: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0541902/
    Ozai: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0193295/

If they fuck up Azula I'm done.

Actually, he does look like a monk. And did I say that looked like Zuko? No, I refuted your retarded comment saying that the entire cast is white, when it's obviously not. Way to twist words around that I didn't even say, genius.

And I think you're forgetting something: this is an American cartoon. It may borrow heavily from the Eastern world, but no where in canon did they state they were Chinese/Japanese/Korean.

Other than me wanting to poke his belly a little bit, he does fit the character pretty well. If this is going to be a series he might grow into the role.

I really want to hear his voice though that would sell it for me if his voice and dialogue fit the original character.

Though I'm against the overly decorated tatoo arrows... That's unnecessary.

Why bother arguing about this? They took a multicultural story and raped it. That is it.

I think you're arguing semantics here. Honestly, if a culture is drawn upon for references and obvious parallels can be seen, then it's fine for someone to draw the conclusion that they are similar, if not the same.

Plus, all of the shop names and words in the show were done in CALLIGRAPHY, NOT ENGLISH. I'm interested in your argument against that, even though I'm not totally against the strange casting choices.

I'm not arguing anything. I'm just saying you, nor Shyamalan, can say for absolute certainty that Aang is Chinese or Caucasian.

One thing. One BIG thing. Guess what language they speak, Zarent? It's not Japanese. It's not Chinese.

    It's English.

The communication thing is bull, and you know it. It has never been said with absolute certainty that the language they're speaking is English.

Anyway, here's a quick article that is kind of pertinent
    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/01/29/DDMU15ICE4.DTL&feed=rss.asianpop

    especially this quote:
Ah well, not a big deal. Probably won't waste my time watching the movie anyway, even though I was a big fan of the show.

... I don't think it needs to be said with absolute certainty that it's English. Any 2 year old can tell you the language they're speaking is English, it's something that's fairly obvious.

Who here realllly thinks that this guy looks Asian enough to care about what actor plays him?

    They did their best.

I will concede that some other characters, such as Iroh, would have been better played by different actors, but as I will refuse to see this movie, I cannot bring myself to care.

Anyway, Zuko and Iroh look awful. Especially Iroh.

If the kid was Asian, all you whiners would bitch and say that it's an "American Anime" so they are trying too hard to make it more oriental. It's a double standard, so go shove a cock in it.

Anyways, I think Aang is a rather good cast. The kid seems to know his way around the martial arts, the actual Aang from the show looks like a cartoon version of the actor -if a little less expressive, and if anything his chubbiness will just make the movie funnier ... Well, it is Shyamalan. He fails in the comedy department.
