I liked the waitress scene. She was hot and he was going to get some until Dumbledore totally cock blocked him.

But I can not emphasize enough how much i liked the scene after harry views Slughorns real memory. With the ring reacting...

I could almost see Dumbledores thoughts putting the pieces together.
I also liked the scene with Hermione and the birds with harry. Despite my loathing for the pairings, it was a well acted scene.

Despite the fact I knew they were trying to force feed the audience the fact that harry and Hermione are good friends and nothing more... They still did a good job displaying that aspect in the film.

The movie in general was good in and of its self. As a "book movie" I think it also did a good job putting enough material from the book in to keep the fans satisfied and balancing the add on's to keep the new people up to date. Plus, there were NO. FUCKING. DURSLEYS.

Other good points I deem worthy of posting.
    The Ron poison scene.
Fred and George in the shop, even though they left out the back room conversation.
    The Cave.
After the viewing of the real memory (Dumbledor flipping his shit and Harry touching the ring).

Was I the only one disgusted with the "Battle of Hogwarts"?

What the hell is the point of smuggling four DeathEaters into Hogwarts if all they are going to do is trash a lunchroom and break some windows? What the FUCK!!!

Hell, Fred and George did more damage when they left in the previous movie and they did it with an overgrown firecracker for God's sake!

I actually enjoyed the movie right up until that point. Like eating your Christmas pudding and finding a dead fly at the bottom of the bowl.

P.S. And yes, I even liked Ginny's role, strong and maternal. Isn't that what Harry sees in her? Not a hot little sex kitten or a warrior princess, but the mother figure that he never had; a younger version of Molly.

I ... don't think so. But maybe it's just my take on Canon.

What Ginny was supposed to be was strong, yes, but maternal? My impression was that Rowling was trying to create an equal, someone who holds her own against Harry and fights at his side (when she tells him off in OotP, goes with him to the DoM); attempting to squash the 'damsel in distress'-cliché. I always figured that was Harry saw in her -- someone who understands him like no one else in the series does, while not in love with his fame and not afraid to smack him over the head if he's a douche.

Whether Rowling got that across is another point >_>

Also, going to watch the movie right now. Comment later.

Edit: Well, yeah. First impression: A compromise with a little bit of everything, which fails to satisfy anything. Mostly.

For example, I don't mind romance. I can like it, enjoy it even -- but here, it felt like I got it dumped from a bucket over my head. Maybe it's just me, but I was missing subtlety. The reason for that seems clear, there wasn't time for subtlety -- Yates had only a few scenes where he could move that sub-plot along, and so he tried to make up for it with blatantness.

Which fails and makes it suck, IMO.

That's a general point, though, if not an entirely new one: The book was too long for the movie, and while the pacing in the beginning was good, the closer it got towards the end, the more often it felt like random scenes were slapped together, which didn't make the movie seem like one entity, but rather a few loose snap-shots that were missing a connection.

For example, the only H/G scene I really liked, the kiss in the Room of Requirement, was murdered brutally when the movie switched to Harry and Ron joking only one second after it.

You seriously can't fucking make a cut like that -_-

If he really wanted to have the romance plot in there, he'd have needed to stay much more focused on it -- and that includes H/G time after the kiss. Not Ron fucking Weasley. I mean, otherwise what's the point? I don't think I’ve seen them together afterwards even once at all.

It's like it didn't happen, and if that's the feeling you get in the end, he could've scrapped it completely and used the screentime for something better.

So yeah, not too overwhelmed, and that has nothing to do with the book, but with its adaption. It gets a decisive meh from me. What saves it is that I was entertained; I especially liked the humour.

    "That's Romilda Vane."

    "Oh?"

"She wants to slip you a love potion."

    "Really?"

    - big grin -

"She likes you because she thinks you are the Chosen One, Harry!"

"... but I AM the Chosen One 8D"

    *smack*

    XD

Edit 2: Oh, also, was the Horcrux explanation from Slughorn botched in English as well? In the German version, it said that the specific part of the soul that is in the Horcrux survives. As in, the rest doesn't. I don't think that's the way it's intended.

DIE. That interpretation is the biggest cause of bad H/G fanfiction.

"Haaarrrrry!" Ginny screeched, hands on her hips.

"Yes, Master?" Harry slithered, kissing Ginny's feet. She was so great and wonderful and wasn't afraid to tell him what to do. Because of course that's what ever guy secretly wants - to be domineered like a pussy.

Or maybe that's just what every feminist wants. It's hard to get these things straight some times.

    <_<

    So yeah, screw you.

Harry liked Ginny not because some shit like "she's his equal and isn't afraid to tell him what to do". People don't fall for each other for crap like that (note if that were true, Hermione would be perfect for him).

Harry likes Ginny for all the usual reasons a guy likes a girl: she's attractive, lively, they do fun stuff together (Quidditch), she's loyal and stands up for him, even when perhaps she shouldn't (she defends Harry's use of Dark magic on Draco Malfoy).

Sure, she's a capable witch. But she's not Xena. And there are lots of capable witches (again, Hermione).

Excellent points, not to mention that he knows that she likes him and therefore there is less risk in his liking her. Harry, like all teenagers well all people actually, fears rejection and seeks to avoid it.

It's true that in the books, he doesn't really begin to like her until he is told that she has given up on him, but he does nothing about it until she approaches and kisses him. Just like with Cho, she had to make the first move as well.

Knowing what you look like, compounded with the fact that you auditioned for the role of Voldemort, made my mental picture of what you'd look like while saying that extremely funny for some reason.

@Rocket:...huh. It's not something I've ever thought about, but I'm wondering who would come out as the more capable witch in a contest between Hermione and Fleur.

Depends what form the contest took, I suppose.

Were it a duel I would say Fleur. If it was a contest more like a Wizard of Earthsea "who can do the more impressive magic" contest I'd say Hermione.

    (Assuming a post-Hogwarts Hermione)

I dunno; I think Hermione could edge her out in both regards, but it would always be a close competition.

Something else I just remembered, thanks in part to some retard posting in Big D on a Diet's crackfic thread: where were Laurasia and Sofie? I sense scene deletion.

Bullshit. Harry likes Ginny because She's his best friend's reasonably attractive little sister. He just wanted to get into her forbidden forest. :awesome

In reality though I do agree with Taure.

    Just came back from it.

I read some spoilers before seeing it, and I fully expected it to suck, but surprisingly I ended up liking it.

There were some parts I didn't like, such as the scene with Harry and Ginny when he goes to the burrow in the beginning, the scene where she ties his shoe, and the scene where Bella and Fenrir attack the Burrow, but overall I thought it was pretty great.

It had some great unintentional humor to it, most notably Cormac and his giant penis broom. I couldn't stop laughing at some of the poses he was making while stroking the damn thing. Stoned!Harry, Luna, and Lavender were also a trip. Also, Ron was much better than I remember him being in the last few movies. I might even go as far as to say that he 'made' the movie. IMO, he easily out-acted everybody with the exception of Malfoy.

There's something about Dumbledore that pissed me off though. I think it was his voice. I prefer the Dumbledore from the first few movies...too bad he had to go and die.

The cave scene was awesome, but I was pissed they cut out the whole battle scene. They could have at least showed a minute or two of fighting instead of just Bellatrix smashing shit. Also, mega point deduction for not showing Snape go apeshit and wtfpwn Harry.

okay enough rambling. I'd probably give it a 4/5.

edit: nearly forgot but lol at Harry casually breaking the Statute of Secrecy by reading the Daily Prophet in front of muggles. That was pretty random.

At least the pictures didn't move when he had it in front of a muggle.

I'm glad I wasn't the only person that noticed the broom. Here I was thinking I was going all perverted...

edit: Also, I thought it was a bit anticlimactic the way that the Harry vs. Snape scene turned out. The whole "I...am the half-blood prince." thing was a little weak. All that build up and you were left thinking "oh no?" You would think that something would happen after that, but all that happened was Radcliff looking at the camera like a deer in the headlights.

The more I watch it, the less pleased I become at the cutting. Is it just me? I think they did a really bad job. Scenes are put together with no transition whatsoever and condensed to the barest minimum. The result is that you get lost easily, because you never know what the relation between the scenes is. How much time has passed in between? Do they follow directly after one another, or is it a week, a month later, and they simply didn't show the passing time?

For example, when Harry asks Slughorn about Riddle after the dinner, he brushes him off. From inside the room, we cut to Harry outside the room, and asking Slughorn again (when he opens that little door in the door). At that point, I assumed it was a few days later, and Harry was trying again. Then, again, cut directly to the dorms, where Ron has just eaten the spiked chocolate. At that point, I no longer knew where I was, time-wise.

Cut right back to Slughorn's door -- and in the dialogue that follows, it's implied it's all the same evening? Seriously, if you get confused in the movie while actually having read the damn book, I can't imagine how that movie works if you haven't.

Another thing about condensing it that much is that I found it too dialogue-heavy. There are rarely points where the movie can breath and take its time, because we're always in a rush, jumping from one important point in the book to the next, while the necessary information is crammed into the dialogues, since that is faster than showing it in images.

I almost have the feeling the writers were overwhelmed in making the book a script. Among the best scenes are always those that are different from the books, or aren't there at all -- Harry at the station. Malfoy and his continuing work on the cabinet. Harry and Ginny in the Room of Requirements. Harry and Hermione together with the birds. And, incidentally, those scenes are also the ones where there is a little time to let the movie unfold.

Or am I expecting too much?

Oh and also, Lupin looks like a cheap Hitler imitation. In the scenes at the Burrow, I think he even had the little goatee >_>

    Poor Tonks.

@Taure: I dislike pussy-whipped Harry as much as anyone. And no, it doesn't suddenly become more bearable because it's Ginny, instead of Hermione. I've really no problems being a hypocrite sometimes, but not in this case <_<

The thing is though, above was the genuine impression I got. And apparently, so did many other people, or there wouldn't be the abundance of those shitty H/G stories you mentioned in the first place, right?

In the mind of a Muggle I seemed to have felt apprehended and held captive for over two hours without comfort. There must be a reason why I felt let down, so I did some research into who developed this dreadful film. What I found was that Chris Columbus is nowhere to be seen in the credits. His astonishing vision was only attributed to the first three films and has since been ripped off by cheaper counter parts who have drained this compelling masterpiece and turned it into a blatant bore. The ending is completely changed and replaced with nothing but some character lines. Then the credits quickly come up, leaving a bitter taste in your mouth. I fully blame director David Yates, who I doubt even read the books nor is he in love with the premise. Unfortunately he'll also helm the final two movies, for which I am very surprised. Maybe from this travesty the producers will break the bank and bring back Columbus, unlikely given they're already filming part one of Deathly Hallows. For the hardcore fan you already have or will undoubtedly see this film regardless the reviews. Though for the the average fan, do not waste your valuable time on this uneventful drag. This adaptation is not only a rip its the worst I've ever witnessed in terms of what the author was attempting to portray. Hollywood is stealing our imagination, the days of reading a book and deciding what the characters look like are over. I'm beginning to think 2009 is the year of outrageously overrated movies.

I found this review hilarious. My own opinion, there were things that could have been taken advantage of that were not. More action and magical battles were needed. I thought Death Eaters were badass, not grinning pussies. Where was the Crucio on some mudbloods? Where was the rage, the anger, the fury?

I sure as hell didn't see it.
