So in a recently released article from Blizzard they say that they've secured Sam Raimi, the guy who did the Spider-Man movies to direct a live action World of Warcraft movie.

Thoughts from any of the WoW playing DLPers out there?

Can somebody explain exactly what this is? I would think that it couldnt go further than a web release, maybe straight to dvd, but with a big shot director....

Honestly Im not sure this is the first time Id ever heard even a rumor about them making this, and Im thinking kind of the same way you are, I might have thought straight to dvd like the Dungeons and Dragons movie but if they've nabbed such a prominent director for it then maybe not. I see this either going amazingly and becoming something akin to the Lord of the Rings movie series or flopping and becoming a running joke like the D and D movies.

Edit: Okay did a little looking around and found this
    http://warcraft.moviechronicles.com/

Hmm things are looking up for this, confirmed 100 million dollar budget, looking for the biggest name staff they can get but they wont make it a necessity to get big name actors, and they are going to tell the story from the perspective of the Alliance.

It depends if they make it on the premises of the original lore or the 'butchery' they put into the games. The lore itself is vast and entertaining and whilst the game itself is fun as well once you reach a certain point, it wouldn't make a good base for a movie.

The big question though if they make the movie based on the lore is what they would include. There is 20ish books and you simply can't fit that into a movie. A long series of movies would probably become diluted, under financed and sub-par after a couple of them, since the fanbase is vastly smaller than that of Spider-man for example. No, one movie only in my opinion though the question still remains, what part?

I believe it won't quite be as good as the LotR movies, those were fucking legendary and will not be topped for a good amount of time. However, depending on execution it might be very good, even epic considering the director and funds. And as you say, it might fail spectacularly. Time will tell.

Also; of course they'll do it from the Alliance viewpoint -_-

Alliance? burn. Somehow I knew they'd do that. Why not remain neutral?

The will probably include the time where the Orcs was dependant on the bloodlust and wishes to make the movie on the basic Good vs Evil principle. Ergo, Alliance viewpoint.

From what I've heard it's based a year before WoW.

Yeah, of course it's Alliance viewpoint. Lame. I just hope they'll show a Boomkin. If they do that and show a Boomkin being awesome I will be happy.

Any tips on where I could find more lore? I enjoy the questing and storylines in the game but I know I'm only getting a fraction of what's actually there.

You could either buy the books with Warcraft lore, from the internet or a very well stocked bookshop. Or you could view the shortened storyline at WoW's homepage.

At least we are guaranteed good special effects and graphics. If there is one thing Blizzard absolutely shits over others, its there cinematic scenes. But then again, theygo for approx. 2 minutes so that might have something to do with it. I'm waiting for Diablo 3 just for the cinematics, I still think Diablo 2 cinematics is the best of all time.

EDIT: God dammit. Now I have to install and play Diablo 2 again after reading this. :(

The Warcraft universe has a lot of potential to provide some very, very awesome movies. It also has some of the most shallow, poorly-characterised and blatant Mary-Sue characters that I've ever read anywhere - including in fan fiction. Thrall, Jaina and Rhonin all compete with Enoby Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way to see who can make me vomit with rage first, and they do quite well.

Still... there's a lot of very good stuff there. If the movie is really set a year before World of Warcraft then it could follow the plot of Cycle of Hatred which wouldn't be too horrible. Or it could tell the story of Edwin VanCleef and his Defias Brotherhood deciding to kidnap King Varian Wrynn, which would be a better story but wouldn't really feature any race but the humans.

As for the director... the first two Spider-Man movies are possibly the best comic book adaptations so far, so it's certainly possible he'll make a good movie out of Warcraft. Then again he could have awful writers and we end up with another Dungeons and Dragons.

Or you could take a read through this convenient wiki if you have something specific in mind.

Huh? Theres already a well received adaption to live action called World of Whorecraft, google it.

Seriously though it has a chance at being good. They turned down Uwe Bole when he offered to make the movie so at least some care has been put into it.

A wiki is usually not recommended if you want reliable information. This is doubly true when it is most likely edited by clueless morons whom think they're the best -insert race/class here- evarz!!
