Tagging in For Review: Browsing the Library by pairings

With Raven's great update, we now have tags. This is a potentially awesome concept, which removes a blank the search engine of the boards had: you never could search story threads for pairings, because it had problems handling strings (e.g. "Harry/Fleur"), so browsing the library by pairings was impossible.

    Well, it works now 8D

I went through the library and tagged the pairings to the threads, as much as that was possible. To keep it useable, we now need three things:
    • No retards that get giggles out of tagging wrong pairings to stories, and
    • You to add the pairing-tag to your For Review/story threads (if it has a pairing), while
    • Using already existing tags if it's an already existing pairing

The latter is the most important point. In bold and red:

If you want to add a pairing-tag, please stick to the format 'Harry/FirstName'.

This goes for pairings that as of yet have no tags as well. (Tonks and Madam Pomfrey are the only exceptions to that rule, as far as I can see; but if cases like that come up again, decide to the best of your judgement.) The reason for that is to keep it consistent; 'Harry/Hermione', 'Hermione/Harry', 'H/Hr', 'HHr' etc., while meaning the same, are not the same as far as tags go. It will create another list for the same pairing. Luckily, sticking to existing tags is quite easy; if you start to type 'Harry/' into the tagbox and wait a moment, it will list you all tags that start with those letters, or in other words, all already existing pairings.

One last comment; since you can only add two tags to threads you haven't created, if a story has more than two pairings (e.g. Harry/Tonks/Narcissa/Bella) it will be tagged and listed as Harry/Many. If it has exactly two pairings (Harry/Tonks/Bella), adding two tags, one for each, (Harry/Tonks, Harry/Bella) is fine.

And finally, if you create a new pairing, post a link to the tag in this thread, and I will try to keep the list up to date.

With all that in mind, feel free to add pairing-tags to still un-tagged stories (there are many in the Recycling Bin), and here is now

This is so full of win.

Did I mention that Raven is god for adding tags?

And you Sir Sesc, are a demi god for adding paring tags.

Searching the library has just go so much easier.

If we're at that, how about adding author's name as a tag? It would allow to search for their stories much more easily.

Am psyched at the new search ability.

While a good idea to search through the authors, if you really wanna know, just google the author themself for some author profile.

Some people upload different stories to different sites. And there is also WbA.

I had some free time so I decided to contribute. I added tags to most of threads in Restricted Section, General Fics, Time Travel Fics and For Review. I decided to add "author:" prefix before every tag because some peoples' nicknames might mix with regular tabs (i.e. someone called sticky would show this thread if there was no prefix). I will try to do the rest of the Library and WbA later, but feel free to help me (it's really, really tedious), just please keep it in the same format as I did:

author:Nickname (note that there is no space between prefix and nickname)

    example: author:Amerision

While adding tags I encountered two problems:
    1) I was unable to tag closed topics. Logical, I know, but still worth mentioning.
    2) Max length of a tag is 25 characters. So far, five nicknames exceeded that after adding prefix (by up to 5 characters). I just cut last letters so they would fit, but I'm pretty sure that raising length limit by five or ten characters wouldn't put too much strain on the server.

    ***
    You can just middle-click ;)

    I'm starting Humor/Parody right now

Gotten to work on "The Alternates" section, following the same template KrzaQ set.

So far, 2 have gone over the 25 character limit. Also checking the links to see if the author is going by a different name. Came across a couple where the name posted didn't match the name in the fic link.

I'll edit in when I am done.

    -----

    *edit fu*

    Alternates section done...

4 authors names had to be shorten. I skipped checking the links, was getting redundant on my part.

    ---

    Firefox tabs are awesome.

Go to section page -> right click thread link -> open link in new tab.
Do this for the rest of the links on the page. Makes copy/paste'ing authors name easier.

    1) Won't be changing without a code change.
    2) Bumped up to 100 chars (max without DB schema changes)

I'm done with Humor/Parody. Thanks for changing max length, I already fixed all tags I had to cut.

There is another problem, though, and I'm unsure how to solve this one. Some people use different names on different sites and I'm unsure how to tag their stories. Big D on a Diet here and on ff.net is bigdonadiet on ficwad, Jon is Surarrin on ff.net and Vash is Rage Buddha on ff.net. So far, I just doubletagged them, but I'm sure there is a better solution.

And then you have the folk who even on one site, can't seem to pick a name or three and stick with them :awesome.

For DLP members, I'd go with the most common name - doubling up if you have to. Vash/Vash the Unholy/Rage Buddha/Machiavelli is first and foremost Vash, for instance. For people whose names change by site, remember you're searching DLP. DLP username takes priority.

For the rest of them... Any story thread that begins [title] by [name] <name> use <name> that even if they have since changed it. If not in the title then DLP review format requires that the OP put title/rating/pairing/author's name in the opening summary - use what's ever there - again, regardless if it's since been changed.

Seems a good way to keep everything on the straight and narrow.

Edit: And right after I post this, I namechange. MASSIVE IRONY BLINKERS. Everything however will soon be vlad... or it would be if vlad wasn't taken at ffnet. Sorry chaps...

I finished the author tagging in the Independent and Dark Arts sections. I think that takes care of everything except the Recycling Bin. It'll take a brave soul to tackle the 26 pages of stuff in there.

Great job Mike, and brave soul huh?

Edit: That was more time consuming then I thought. I got through the first 12 pages for anyone that is going to go through that. I stopped at the top of Page 13 as I'm going to bed. (6:30 AM here)

If anyone finishes the last 13 or goes further, let me know because otherwise I'll finish later.
