Anyway, I'll have to agree with Nonjon. This has nothing to do with us. If one random member sent a letter to this guy claiming to represent DLP, it still means nothing.

Let the guy talk about "media attention and legal action" all he wants. This isn't interesting enough for the media to bother with it, and what on earth would his basis for legal action be?

It's all talk and no substance, as usual.

 

Aside from who this Wim Vinckens is, my main question is: Does this have any chance of success? Can he do enough to get FF.net shut down? Because, if so, we have a problem. Sure, 95% of FFn is shit, but the other 5% can be pretty good. It's a repository of over 5 million stories stretching over a decade. If this guy has a good chance of ending that, I'm pretty worried. So, for someone who is more legal-minded than I, could this happen?

 

Highly doubtful, I'm not even sure what Vim could sue for considering he's not the original author of Harry Potter. The most he could ask for is the site to take down the stories that contain his works. I mean for example, the authors don't want their stuff in fanfiction are listed on the site so if any of their works are made fanfiction of then that person is banned. However, that wouldn't cause the whole site to be shut down.

At most, FF.net would have to change their policy. I mean think about it, does one author who says his stories got stolen when he stole the idea from Rowling in the first place going to go far?

All FF.net can do is ban and remove the stories as they come up. I mean honestly, if your stories get stolen, just report it. There is no reason to go around attention whoring and crying about how you're going to quit the internets because people think your stuff sucks.

 

First time I've heard of Wim Vincken or the other shit Silens was talking about. But I'm both proud that we've become the bogyeman of Harry Potter as well as disgusted that they have to blame us to cover up their massive shipments of fail. What the fuck is up with people on the internet?

Basically he's just announcing that because FF admins are slow he is going to sue them.

 

Yeah, considering how he doesn't own the source material - I forsee a motion for summary judgment directed for the defendants due to lack of a basis of a claim.

Worst case scenario - the douche somehow finds a judge who is interested in taking this to trial - and JKR or some other published author gets dragged in. That would be the fastest way to chill the online environment for fanfiction.

 

Actually, he just posted one on ficwad a few days ago. And yes he is a seriously shitty writer. As for threats, I'm with the "harden the fuck up and get over it" faction.

The guy writes stories about harems full of 13 year old girls. Nobody who does that is going to expose himself to the public by bringing a law suit.

 

That would be so lulzy if he had to read some of his "smut" in a courtroom full of people. That way, everybody can see plain and clear the kind of this stuff this guy writes, and what he has done to the Harry Potter characters. While it would not look good for fanfiction in general, it would still be pretty :awesome

We've got a HP Fanfic rec thread running, and a guy named JoeHundredaire is over there ranting, raging, and otherwise being an utter fuckhead over something that he got involved with DLP for quite a bloody while ago. It's in like the last fifteen pages of the thread, and he won't shut up about it.

Of course, when anyone flames anyone else on the internet, eventually someone shows up to argue the other side. Cue assorted DLP members getting on their old accounts, making new ones, or the like, and reasonably and logically defending DLP, and pointing out what an utter fuckhead Joe's being. All of which I, and indeed, everyone else in the thread agree with.

Fortunately, it does seem like he's finally run the gamut of his arguing faggotry and stopped flaming and shit, but as a spacebattler, it really annoys me that we're home to such a fuckhead, yanno?

N. O. X. hit the nail on the head: no way in hell is anyone who writes that shit bringing themselves public attention. I only read the first few paragraphs but Jesus, what a crackpot...worse than Kinsfire, by far.

 

I have yet to see an anti-DLP rant on another site from a person who wasn't once keen to be accepted at DLP then got butthurt by harsh reviews of their work or general flaming of their person.

JoeHundredaire comes to mind, as does that guy from TFF (Nekreb?).
