Without knowing the actual extent of ability for those who'd be doing the fighting it's almost impossible to say. Indeed, with no real indication of how magic works at all, (there was a recent debate if a spell travelled from your wand at the beginning or end of incantation) or indeed how fast spells travel through the air it's hard to say if all top class magical duellists have superhuman reflexes or not.

One of the things I looked into with the Skitterleap was turning combat orientated magic into something like MCMAP. An all purpose martial arts with emphasis on each blow being lethal, the problem comes with that in canon, people bandy spells about as though they were confetti and from the DoM fight, Death Eaters are able to over power the aurors of OoTP in one on one combat.

It's really up to the reader/writer to decide how it works out.

Somewhere above Taure had mentioned how the Tonks' household had become impenetrable during the war. I don't really remember enough of canon to say whether that's true or not, but if it is then it exposes another of JKRs plot holes.

If there was such a thing as an impenetrable defense then the Potters would have had that level of security rather than (or including the Fidelius) only the Fidelius. Obviously the Fidelius is very hard to crack, but obviously not unbreakable. So this leaves the author free to go either way in his/her story and either had unbreakable wards of just powerful ones.

This obviously makes a big difference to wartime strategy. Advancing into enemy territory and securing your own would become a lot easier should you assume unbreakable wards.

Also, Taure, I don't know if it's been mentioned in canon or not, but where exactly did u get the international distance limit for apparation?

On the topic of apparation, antiapparation wards can be put up given sufficient time (Hogwarts and I think the Ministry also - it makes no sense if you come through the elevator they require you to pass your ward for inspection, but if you apparate straight to your office there is no such requirement.) This obviously again has its uses, allowing wizards to secure battlefields against sneak attacks through apparation.

Finally, everyone has mentioned guerrilla warfare as it was the only form of warfare given in cannon. This simply does not lead to the logical conclusion that the only from of wizarding warfare is guerrilla. Voldemort was the only publicly known figure of his campaign, everyone else had positions in society and couldn't risk the exposure open warfare would bring them. So we simply haven't been given enough information on a proper, say, country vs country war to do anything other than speculate on it. If people are honored for their achievements in war then they would no longer need to hide the fact that they were warriors, removing the enforced guerrilla environment in canon.

    I agree with this statement.

Quidditch Through the Ages, Chapter 9. Inter-continental apparation should only be attempted by highly skilled wizards.

However, analysis of the WOMBAT tests (The Lexicon took the test multiple times with different answers and thus can tell what the answers were from the relative scores) indicates that international apparation is illegal.

While it was impenetrable in the short term, given time I suppose Voldemort may have broken in. We don't really know how these spells work well enough.

If the Tonks' household is impenetrable then you don't go in, you bring down a fucking satellite on it and blow it into many little burning pieces.

Though not Canon by any means, the way I like to see it is that spells have three basic points to them: incantation, intention, and wand movement.

Incantations are a must, either verbally or within one's head, to provide the right frame of mind for your intentions.

Take the Incendio spell for example. Just the simple fire starting spell, I say it is totally permeable to the caster's intentions. Want to turn it into a whip? A ring of fire? Sure thing, as long as the magic user has understanding of the theory, the will power, and the confidence to cast his spells.

Wand movement is different, though. It's not always a necessity, as you can see when Harry casts Lumos and doesn't even have the wand in hand during OotP. I think it's up to the writer to decide which spells have wand movements, though in Canon there is no evidence of high level magics requiring complex wand movements, or any movement to speak of besides pointing where you want the spell.

EDIT: On the aiming thing: All spells travel by air if they are meant to attack the target. Even spells such as the Cruciatus Curse, which seems instantaneous, have to travel from point A to point B. One example of this is a tombstone in the graveyard the night of Voldemort's resurrection, which broke when it took a Crucio that was meant for Harry. Why would a wizard ever aim his wand if spells were instantaneous and did exactly what the caster wanted? There must be a time in between the casting of the curse and the effect when every spell is blockable (which even Avada Kedavra is if you put something physical between you and it).

That was several years later, there could have been advancements made, etc. And if the Secret-Keeper doesn't give up the location, the Fidelius is impenetrable. The Potters trusted Peter Pettigrew 100% so it was for all purposes invincible.

If the Tonks' household is impenetrable then the falling satellite does nothing to the house.

    Because, you know, it's impenetrable.

Vlad's post is rather spot on. Modern armies tactics have evolved from the need for supplies and communication and deployment. Magic can create food, transmit messages instantly, and apparition can deploy people instantly. Add in a tattoo like Voldemort uses, and have it only activated under certain conditions (aka, one cell being compromised), and it'd be very easy to set up a cell structured hit-and-run terror organization.

You can't make food, so there still needs to be some type of supply base somewhere. No supply lines because of instant travel, but there still needs to be a place where the food is grown.

Also, did shrinking/growing/multiply charms affect food or is it just the creation of food that is not allowed?

You can't conjure food, but you can transfigure it, expand it, summon it from a distance and cook it with magic.

So effectively, you can make your own food.

So the rule is only limited to conjuration? Well damn. Unlimited food indeed. Summoning would still need a supply base of some sort, but if you have an apple and can cut it into pieces, then transfigure each piece into full apples, and cut it up more, etc... That's a ton of food.

Actually, you can. There's a reason there's no food shops in Diagon (look it up - there aren't). But even if you couldn't, it'd be a dead-brained matter to rob muggle stores.

Get 50 rocks, transfigure them into cows. Wizard army fed. On steak.

Hmm, if you can transfigure a rock into a cow, could you tranfigure it into a human? I'm assuming not but I wonder why.

I guess a wizard could create a human body, but it's most likely impossible to conjure a soul. It would be just a flesh and blood doll.

Why? Transfiguration in HP is basically 'point your wand and say the magic word'. I don't understand what makes that complex.
