I wonder if this has been posted about before:

"DownloadStory is an application that was put together to facilitate downloading all of a fanfiction story off of any of the biggest fanfiction websites. Once downloaded, the entire story is available even when you are offline - great for installing on an iPhone to read on the go, or on your laptop on airplane trips."

Unfortunately, it's only for Mac, at the moment.

Which is probably why most of us have never heard of it.

Perhaps someone will be interested in variation of such utility I've made. It is a greasemonkey script which allows you to put the whole story on one page. There is a version for PC too, since the function isn't implemented there yet.

Good find. Got a Mac, going to check it out...

EDIT: Nice, tried it on my stories. It's decent enough.

    Oh. Oh dang.

Well, a version for mac users, I guess. :p

Though, to be fair, DeFFNetIzer and Fanfiction Downloader seem far better. Pity there's no Mac version for either.

Thanks for this, I've been looking for a Mac version of DeFFNetIzer for quite a while.

I kept having to start Parallels whenever I wanted to download a fic. Either that or do it manually. :(

I like this, except you can't save the stories once you have them on one page. You could load up a story with two chapters, or a hundred, but when you save it, you get the first chapter (or whichever chapter you were on when you clicked the 'story' icon).

My connection is so slow, I'd be better served by simply downloading any story I think I might like, using DeFFNetIzer, as opposed to doing it once with this plugin, then again with DeFFNetIzer.

Other than that, it's pretty cool. I really like that you can go light or dark, add chapter headers and an index, and remove all but the story text.

Classy, but not necessarily worth it for those with slow connections who want to actually DL a large story. If you have broadband, I suppose you could just reload the whole story whenever you wanted...

I realize this isn't exactly the most elegant option, but...

    1) Open MS Word/Notepad/Equivalent
    2) Copy story from FFN
    3) Paste.
    4) Save.

Firefox actually saves everything, preserving the current state of the page, if you use "Save as..." "Web Page, Complete". Not the most clean solution though, I'll admit, as it creates a folder alongside the html file.

That certainly occurred to me, though, like I said, on my connection (at least for large stories), it's simply more convenient to use DeFFNetIzer anyway, so the cutting and pasting just becomes a needless hassle.

Your option definitely works, if it's worth someone's time to do that, though.

Er... I did just say that didn't work, right? If it does for another Firefox user, I'd love to know what's different about their setup (no sarcasm, really, I'm curious).

    Shit. That does work.

I never would have thought that would work any differently than saving it normally, since all it does is grab the media to go with the page (after all, the local source code reads the same before and after using the FFN script).

So regular save = original page. Web Page complete = current view. Interesting.

Since you've pointed this out to me, I checked another option; saving it as an MHT file with the UnMHT add-on. It worked just as well as 'web page complete', except there's no folder to delete.

Unfortunately, even if you use the FFN script's "Text" button to remove everything from the page but the actual story text, the file is still much larger than just using 'web page complete'.

On a sample two-chapter story, the htm file rendered by saving it as a complete web page and deleting the folder ended up being 63kb. The MHT file of the exact same page with just the story text was 161kb. Nearly three times as big!

Personally speaking, DeFFNetIzer is still much more convenient for me, for large stories, mostly thanks to my connection.

However, for two-shots and stories shorter than, say, five chapters, I'd much rather use this script and get it all on one page than to have to keep a bunch of loose htm files around or have a whole new folder (via DeFFNetIzer) for a story with so few chapters.

Deleting the extraneous folder created by using the "Web Page complete" option is really no big deal and can wait until I log off after a session of trawling FFN for decent reads, which I only do once a month or so. That way I can just ditch them all at once. No biggie.

I'm glad you figured that out, because it's a nice little gadget if you read stuff from FFN and use Firefox. I was hoping it to be useful to me, and now it is. Thanks.

WEUer: Er, perhaps the confusion is because we weren't talking about DownloadStory? Sorry for the hijack, but I don't have a Mac. On the other hand, I can use Greasemonkey scripts.

Will any of these work with Fiction Press? I know that the Graffer one I downloaded doesn't. Anyone know?

Another option: Install a pdf printer (cutepdf is what I use) and "print" the page to a pdf file. I prefer the FF Downloader though, as it saves the files in mobipocket format, which I have found is really nice for viewing the fics on a pda. I've found long webpages start to crawl on my HTC Touch after a while, but the mobi files read just fine.

One gripe I have with the FF downloader though: it doesn't save the story summary as well, so I have to either remember what a story is by its name or copy this info manually.

Errr....I use this thing called "fanfic downloader" (available at either softpedia or the programmers page). Its really convenient, works with ff.net, portkey.org, fanficauthors.net, and a lot of other popular ones. Works perfectly, I almost never have problems. Whenever I do, he fixes them almost immediately.

My favorite part is that it also saves to ".mobi" which I then use to put on my phone via "Mobipocket Reader." I have over 100 MB of stories on my phone alone (not including the DLP archive).

Only thing is that downloaders make it difficult to submit reviews to the author or keep up with a fic, because normally, once I'm done with a fic I don't think about it again.
