Here are a couple that bug me:

Re-writing a scene from each character's perspective so you end up reading the same basic thing 10 times.

Regurgitating paragraphs from a previous chapter for no real reason but to fill up space, not so much when it is copied from another story, but when when it was something that happened just a few chapters ago?

Quoting song lyrics for the same reason as above, to up the word count.

Hole instead of whole (etc, there are a TON!) don't think just because spellcheck finds no errors, that the spelling is correct.

Using abbreviations in dialog.....people wouldn't say "There are DEs coming through the RoR and they are casting AKs!" Unless there is a valid reason for it (IE: they are speaking of something privledged in mixed company and don't want others to know what they are talking about)

Harry referring to vanquishing Voldemort as murder, especially when he really dwells on it.

Admittedly I haven't read HBP in a while, however, I was under the impression that after his initial anger towards his dad he realized that he only saw things from Snape's perspective. He also gets angry at his dad's behavior on OOTP but gets over that with the help of Sirius and Lupin, who told him that James and Severus "never missed an oppurtunity to hex each other" the cliche that I was talking about is the one where Harry develops this blind hatred for his dad based on Snape's words.

What about the old cliche where Harry tells Dobby not to call him "sir" or "master" etc. and Dobby bursts into hysterics.

I'm always irked when I see Dumbledore calling Harry "young Harry." This wouldn't bother me if it was done once in a while, but it's done every time Dumbledore is talking to someone about Harry. He doesn't refer to anyone else like that ('young Ron, young Hermione), just Harry.

Also, I really hate when Voldemort is given the "sinister" dialogue. Most of the time it comes off sounding really fake and not what Voldemort would say.

I don't really have the time to read all the posts so please forgive me if I'm repeating what someone else has already said.

    1) When someone is whining like a little bitch and Harry goes all nuts "YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT BAD?! WELL I HAD TO GO THROUGH blah blah blah".

    2) "I want to offer you a proposal..." That should be forever stricken from fanfiction.

    3) "He has that 100 yard stare (w/e the distance is". Wow, is everybody really that observant and recognizes the look that immediately identifies someone as having had a traumatic past? Maybe whoever was staring that way was just lost in thought or looking behind you cuz your face is too repulsive.

When Harry flips out at someone for calling him "Boy" because it reminds him of the horrible assrapings he suffered at the hands of Uncle Vernon. It's been used in every single abused!Harry fic out there, and it's always been stupid. Either make the story about how Harry goes from bitch to badass, or write an actual, realistic story about an abused Harry - none of this half-and-half emo crap that ends up in my searches.

I seriously think that all authors that categorize their fics as hurt/comfort should be banned from writing.

Whenever a character has to act like a complete idiot in order for something to occur in the story while otherwise being treated like if he/she is a genius in the story.

I think this had been mentioned already but Hermione being basically used as a library whenever needed.

Everyone else has basically listed the other cliches I can think of off the top of my head. However, I think it's worth mentioning the whole "Avada Kedavra is used to put horses out of their misery" or "Wingardium Leviosa can be used to lift someone to a high distance and drop them." Honestly, it's war, just because Canon Harry was too busy bitching about useless stuff to realize it doesn't mean anyone with common sense has to be naive of it either. It's either you or them.

That's less a cliche in dialogue than it is a cliche in concept. The whole point of having Harry learn the Dark Arts, from the writer's point of view, is to make the fic edgier. When they justify it there's nothing worth reading anymore.

It's the dialogue part that gets me more than anything though. I mean I've read so many fics where that excuse is used. I mean if they have to use that excuse, they could be a little more original.

Just because it is canon doesn't mean it is not annoying. I hate it in the canon and i hate more when it is in fanfic.

Dumbledore. Eyes. Twinkle. X every scene.

Why? What is the fascination with his twinkling eyes?

Surely there must be other ways to describe Dumbledore's jovial personality?

I know, that's why I originally put I had enough of it from JK in Canon but I didn't want to come off as just bitching about canon in a fanon cliche thread.

    Definitely 'Ew'!

It should be "Harry put his hands around Ginny/Hermione's waist."

    Which is just as horrifying.

Voldemort's super retarded "Harry Potter?!!!!!! That can't be!!!!".

It just begs someone to say, "surprised to see me?" - which is, in fact, another dialogue cliche.

In these horrible Draco/Ginny fics, I find them calling each other Weaslette and Ferret to be quite annoying. Not to mention Ron constantly whining everywhere in those fics and others.
