Lol @ 'Jim Butcher does it, so it's no longer as nerdy'.

LARPing sounds like an amazing amount of fun, but it would take some truly inspired and equally nerdy friends to accomplish.

I LARP all the time - except we call it fencing club, paintballing, or MMA/Thai boxing.

I just go by Link, MasterChief, or Hitmonlee, depending on the situation :awesome

Pretty much. I've only done it twice, but it's awesome. Some people take it way too seriously though.

Lice? You hang out with an odd crowd... ^.~

Ever heard of Six stones or Society in Shadow?

Oh, and my reply to her was something along the lines of 'I don't know, which is nerdier, an author or an acter?"

Actor. An author can live in relative obscurity behind a pen-name; an actor is basically a professional LARP-er.

OT: I don't care who knows I read/write fanfiction. I'm weird anyway in RL - not like being a fanfic nerd will do much damage.

I don't really hide from it. It usually comes up when I'm talking to people about my books. They ask how I got started and I say I wrote fanfics and developed a readerbase. If they ask if I still do, I say yes and that it keeps the readers happy and happy readers are more likely to try my original works. I tell them that I don't have an ad budget when it comes to my novels, so this is part of my ad scheme.

My personal website doesn't mention it, but a few people have friended me on facebook, so there's no use trying to keep that genie in the bottle.

Is it going to screw me in the long run? Maybe. Fanfic writers are considered literary scum by "real" writers. Self-published people are considered "too lame not to get a real publisher" by those same people.

Since I'm a fanfic writer who used self publishing, I'll likely be in the small press world for some time to come, but the small press world is pretty fun. It's kind of like minor league baseball. Most will never make it out, but every once in a while someone does.

Take heart: I wouldn't call it "literary scum" so much as being the Velvet Elvis painters of the literary world: not an object of contempt, so much as simply beneath notice.

Doesn't that make you feel better? :)

I keep my habit private, although when the current girlfriend shared her affinity for it I was kind of forced to say "yeah I read too". That led to an interesting conversation.

Gio's GF: You read fanfiction too? That's crazy!
Gio: Yeah, pretty weird coincidence. What stories are you into?
Gio's GF: I used to be pretty hard into Harry Potter, but then I read this really twisted story about an office that killed the appeal.
    Gio:...
    Gio's GF: You've read it?
    Gio:...no.

In real life person to person, its semi-private. People know that I write, and tend to dabble into the streams of fanfiction. But how far deep I immerse myself is something they are not privy too. Granted, oddly enough, it remains to be semi-private with online conversations too.

    Also, hello to all.

    Nice ^.^

I've avoided actually reading it (thank god) but I've heard more than enough about it... But you know...

Gio's GF: You read fanfiction too? That's crazy!
Gio: Yeah, pretty weird coincidence. What stories are you into?
Gio's GF: I used to be pretty hard into Harry Potter, but then I read this really Interesting story about an office And I realized there was no way I'd ever read another to match that perfection.

There, Fixed that for you ^.^

Never said that. I was just pointing it out. -_-

The only person who knows about my fanfiction habits is my brother. He's not exactly... supportive of it, but he doesn't really give a damn either. Which is fine with me.

Private. My older brother knows, he doesn't care. Though if my friends found out that i do this kinda stuff, I'd get so much shit for it. Though, i doubt they'd go too far, besides the friendly teasing. Cus' they know they'd get fucked in rugby training.

Private, mostly. I have told a few close friends and family. After I told a friend, it turns out that he is into fanfiction too. Wow.

It was private.. but then I told the fiance. He's an ass. Before that? I have a long history of shifty eyes and embarrassed quick clicking that I bet they thought I was watching porn. The people I know who are into fanfiction.. they read some weird shit. And that's taking "The Office" into consideration. I try not to talk to them anymore.

As it is now with college and rushing around, I really don't care. I have too much material on my friends&family for them to tease me without getting embarrassed even worse.

Meh, I keep quiet about it unless someone asks me, but that's more because a surprising number of people have been exposed to the concept of fanfiction through randomly stumbling across a shitfic somewhere than me being embarrassed.

After all, misconceptions are harder to clear up than ignorance.

I stopped telling people fairly recently. Because I told my sister about FanFic.. and she got into TWILIGHT FANFIC. And she reads me excerpts. *Shiver*

    Nice Avatar Schrodinger.

My main problem with fanfic is trying to explain why I randomly break out laughing while reading it on occasion.
