Animetal is the most obvious band I can think of to mention, especially considering just how awesome their remixes of anime tracks are. Their Neon Genesis Evangelion Intro cover is fucking immense. They've done about 50 billion other ones as well, so if you can think of a theme song to an anime, they've probably covered it.

Ishii Yasushi is the guy who did the Hellsing anime soundtrack and I've been pimping that for a while now. Adds a great jazzy theme to the whole thing which is just music to my ears, no pun intended. Double Crossed Fool is my personal favourite.

I wish I in some way liked that music. Apparently, I'm not as musically open as I thought.

For some reason, it absolutely killed my head.

    Edit:

That I liked. I know the Hellsing one (never watched Evangelion), and that one was great as well.

    I haven't really been following actual anime music for a rather long time, but The Pillows are absolutely fantastic and absolutely need to be mentioned. They did the OPs and ED for FLCL, but I think that their work is really fantastic dreamy popish rock even without that. Sample below;

You'd be surprised at how it grows on you. I've been listening to their stuff for years now.

Edit: Also if you're interested in jazzy anime music try Yoko Kanno/Seatbelts. Does alot of anime stuff but you gotta love Tank!

Mr. Children is very popular right now. Also try out Dir en Gray, Greeeen and B'z.

    Edit:
There is also Every little thing. They make mostly J-pop music but sometimes also rock. You've probably heard of Orange Range, they sing O2 for Code geass. Yui is awesome but she sings pop rock (Jrock). You probably also know about L'Arc~en~Ciel (Fullmetal Alchemist) and VAMPS.

Seeing that you are a FLOW fan I would recommend Flumpool.

    ...
and then there are the Johnnys... stay away from them.
Joking, but KAT-TUN seems to have a similar style to FLOW.

/is Japanese and lives in Japan.

Lemme browse through my iTunes and see...

I'll just list through what artists and bands that either I like a lot or are pretty big over here right now. The names will also be in Japanese where appropriate. If you can't see them properly, it's probably your text encoding that's wonky.

These aren't a completely fair representation of what's popular in Japan right now (as they're either big names I can remember or just groups I like to listen to), or in any particular order. I put asterisks on the artists I'm particularly fond of in the list. Most of these artists are on Youtube whether officially or not, so check out whatever peaks your interest.

    Mikuni Shimokawa* (下川みくに)
    Hikaru Utada* (宇多田ヒカル)
    Ayumi Hamasaki (浜崎あゆみ)

Wasn't he the guy from Malice Mizer?

I used to listen to j-pop and j-rock a few years ago. A good singer is Kou Shibasaki, I loved a couple of her songs. X-Japan had some pretty and beautiful stuff - you may want to check Yoshiki since he did most of their music. L'Arc~en~ciel, good stuff. Utada Hikaru, good stuff. Ayumi Hamasaki, some crap and some jewels. Tokyo Jihen, good stuff. Nothing else comes to my mind.

I dislike most visual kei bands, though there were a few good songs from Moi Dix Mois or Malice Mizer.

I see a lack of Girugamesh in this thread. I highly recommend them.

Some of L'Arc's older stuff is simply weird... it's tolerable though.

From time to time I've liked Uver's stuff, but in the end I get sick of most JROCK - if you like the song at first, you'll hate it after a few dozen listens. The only artists that I can still endear after listening to their discography are:

    Sambomasta (サンボマスター)
    Akiboshi (明星嘉男)

But both of their music is kind of wonky, Sambo is kind of SCREAMAN and Akiboshi has too many ENGRISH songs

    edit: Some of their songs
